headcanon that the bad batch bois can hardly ever sleep peacefully unless theyâre all sleeping in the same room/ship together.
theyâve been stuck with each other for probably almost their whole lives, and are obviously very attached to one another. we saw that they all shared a special room in the first episode of TBB (unlike the special âpod bunksâ we see in TCW). on the marauder, it looks like they all sleep in bunks close together there too. so theyâre pretty much with each other 24/7. so sleeping apart from one another has to feel so strange and disconcerting to them.
even when echo joins, heâs pretty much the same way. sleeping alone is too scary for him; after what happened on Skako Minor, being alone for too long freaks him out. and he DEF has nightmares for a long time, if not nightly. and the norm for the rest of the batch is to sleep near each other, so they have no issue with him sleeping close by one of them.
theyâre so used to each otherâs little quirks at night that itâs comforting to them. techâs tinkering, wreckerâs snoring, crosshairâs restlessness in his sleep, echoâs prosthetics clicking or creaking when heâs moving, etc. if they try to sleep apart from one another, they end up going into the otherâs rooms and sleeping on the floor so they can feel safe and comfortable again
I love how it turned out, and itâs been too long since I drew them! This is inspired by a quite popular photo, if you know it let me know!
Fun Facts: The background I used is recycled, I used it for my diploma which was also set in a western. And another fact, I LOVE drawing horses, and I realized I should definitely draw them more often.
Echo has recovered from Skako Minor a bit by the time Order 66 happens. it's kind of subtle since he remains thinner than the regs, but there absolutely is a difference if you put it side by side like this
I do wish they didn't forget about him having leg prosthetics though >.>

âKriffing hells,â Fox groaned beneath her. âKara, âm not gonna last if you keep that up.â
âI want it, Fox,â she panted, keeping her pace as she bounced atop him. He wasnât painfully big, but he was long enough that riding him was something of a workout. And the depth he hit within her made her dizzy. âYou gonna give me your cum?â
âKriff, youâve got such a dirty mouth for a princess,â he managed between grunts and moans.Â
She smirked, leaning forward to catch his bottom lip between her teeth, keeping her hips snapping down against his. âCum, Fox,â she pleaded. âI need it.â
âCyarâika, your implantââ
âShould be good for another month,â she said. âGive me your cum, Fox. I want it inside my cunt.â
âKriff,â Fox growled, his hands gripping her hips so hard she was certain sheâd find new bruises atop the old ones. He fucked up into her, meeting her stroke for stroke. âIâm kriffing cummingâah!â
He slammed her down against him, and she could feel it as he painted her walls with rope after rope of his seed. She groaned.
âKriffingâ kriff, youâre gonna be the death of me, Princess.â

The hours bled into days, then into weeks, and the singular comm they had remained silent.
Theyâd built a routine. Getting up and preparing meals together. Sitting in the small living room, reading on their datapads near the fire.Â
Their burgeoning relaâ friendship had resolidified after Vos left, though theyâd kept a careful distance between them.
Kara felt like the other boot was about to drop, if for no other reason than she was going to encourage it.
âFox,â she said, looking up from the novel on her datapad.
âPrincess?â came the rumbling tone sheâd learned to expect from him in the mornings.Â
If she were to say that she didnât want to hear that tone before he entered the main room, sheâd be lying. Sheâd also be lying if she said that she didnât adore the way Fox had been using her title almost like an affectionate nickname.
âWhy did Master Vos show you his hand?â
He blinked at her over his mug of caf, then set it down on the table. Itâd been weeks since the Jediâs impromptu visit, and they hadnât talked about it much aside from Foxâs apologies.
âWhat do you mean?â he asked, as if he couldnât put the pieces together.
She let out a little huff. âYou know what Iâm talking about,â she said. âHe showed you his hand, you called him a name, then he moved my hair stickââ
âWhat do you know about the Force?â he muttered.
âLittle,â she shrugged.
âProbably not much less than me,â he sighed. âMost of them can do a lot of things, but there are things only some of them can do. Vos has a⌠touch thing. He can âseeâ someone if his skin touches something they did. He was showing me that heâd taken off his glove before touching my vambrace when I brought him in.â
Kara hummed. âThatâs the one on your forearm, right?â she asked. Sheâd been learning the pieces of his armor. She told him she was curious about it, just not that she wanted to know in case she ever got the chance to take it off of him herself.Â
âYes,â Fox nodded. âHe probably saw the last few hours before he got here. Think he feels what I felt, too.â
Kara watched him intently as he sipped his caf. She wasnât sure if he noticed the opening he left her.
âAnd, what did he feel?â
Fox
Fox froze.
Kriff.
She was quicker than he was, especially when he was just getting the caffeine in his bloodstream.
âMostly annoyance, Iâd imagine,â he answered. Heâd go for the safer option, but he was fairly certain that sheâd ignore it easily.
âSure, in the couple of moments as you learned it was him,â she continued. âBut what about before that?â
She had him cornered now, and he honestly didnât mind.
He set his mug down fully and moved to the couch where she was reclining, sitting on the very edge to hover over her. He hadnât taken in the extent of her outfit today. Sheâd only brought a few things, but he hadnât seen this tunic before. It had a high neck and long sleeves, but there were cutouts at each shoulder, exposing her freckled shoulders. And more entrancing, it was red. But not just red, it was Corrie-red. Fox-red.
Not for the first time since heâd woken up merely an hour ago, he pushed down the impulse to proclaim his affection for herâhis lust as wellâ hoping that sheâd show him mercy.
But now, he knew he didnât need it. Every movement, every word carefully chosen, she was trying to draw him in. And after a month together, so near each other, he was willing to dive in headfirst.
âYou want to know how I was feeling before Quinlan Vos knocked on the door?â he asked, his voice low.
She gazed up at him through her eyelashes, her lips parting ever so slightly. She nodded slowly.
He leaned down, his face only inches away from her.Â
âWhy donât I just show you?â he suggested.
He heard her breath catch, and then she surged forward, pressing her lips against his in a searing kiss.
Fox had kissed people before. Heâd gone further. But he couldnât compare the other two to Kara.Â
Her arms wrapped around the back of his neck, sending shockwaves down his back. He pulled her closer, threading his fingers into the roots of her hair.Â
But as he deepened the kiss, a small moan came from her throat. Pulling himself away from her felt like stepping onto an ice planet, but he did it anyway.Â
âPrincess,â he panted. âYouâre going to be the death of me.â
Her tongue darted out of her smirk to wet her kiss-swollen lips.Â
âKara,â he groaned.Â
And then he was kissing her again and again.Â
Kara
Kissing Fox felt like watching the sun rising in the skies of Myso. The only thing keeping her grounded was the feeling of his hands at her neck or her cheek.Â
Her body felt like it was on fire, and every touch, every movement, every small noise he probably didnât know he was making only fanned the embers growing hotter in her core.Â
But then his lips started to move. First, achingly slowly off her mouth, down her jaw, then to her neck, just above the high collar of her shirt. She could feel her pulse point hammering beneath the ministrations of his lips and tongue, and she couldnât restrain her moans.Â
âFox,â she whimpered, her fingers carding into the curls at the back of his head.
âKara,â he breathed against her heated skin. âMeshâla.â
She didnât know the word, but the way he whispered it, so reverently, made her skin prickle with goosebumps.Â
âMeshâla,â he groaned again as he continued moving, skipping over the fabric of her shirt to the cutout at her shoulder.
He seemed content to kiss every bit of her exposed skin, and she was happy to let him.Â
âFox, Iââ she started, only to be cut off by her own sighs.
âAm I moving too fast, Princess?â his voice rumbled out against her collarbone.Â
âGods below, Fox,â she complained. âIf I took the lead, weâd already be in my bed.â
Fox chuckled as his hands roved down her body, skillfully avoiding her breasts to rest at her waist. His fingers dipped below the hem of her shirt, making her gasp.Â
He hummed as he lifted his head back to her face. âSo Iâm moving too slow for you.â
Before she could even think of a response, his arms looped under her, lifting her off the couch and over his shoulder.Â
âFox!â she shrieked.Â
âYou want to go fast, cyarâika?â he asked, his voice dropping in a way that had her thighs pressing together. âLetâs go fast.â
He pressed her down into the bed, held himself just above her, and caught her lips again in a fierce kiss.Â
Fox
He pulled back, taking note of the way she tried to follow after him.Â
âFox,â she pleaded. Kriff, he could listen to her pleading for him for hours.Â
âCyarâika,â he replied simply.Â
He then continued his attack. He kissed her lips. He nipped at her neck. He let his hands roam down over her curvesâkriff, she had such perfect curvesâand up underneath her shirt. He swallowed her soft gasp.
Her skin was so soft, so hot, so pliable beneath his hands. He wanted nothing more than to devour her.
Actually, that wasnât a bad idea.
âPrincess,â he murmured. âLet me undress you.â
She groaned, her hips lifting, pressing against his. âYes,â she breathed.
Kriff, he was painfully hard behind his armor. Kriff. He was still in his armor, and she was still wearing clothes.
âPrincess,â he hummed. He wrapped one hand around the back of her neck, lifting her up to him so he could finally push her shirt up. It caught slightly on her breasts, which fell out with a slight bounce.
Kara
Foxâs gaze darkened even more as it fixed on her breasts. She hadnât known him long, but he looked⌠hungry.
âKara, cyarâika,â he bent down, pressing against her. His stubble brushed against her ear. âIâm going to undress you, Princess, and Iâm going to taste you.â
Maybe he was hungry. She couldnât stop the moan that seemed to come from her toes, if she wanted to. And she did not. She wantedâneeded him to hear her.
Her shirt was finally off, but she didnât feel the chill of the room. Then he was hooking his fingers in the top of her pants and dragging them down.
âOh, ner meshâla cyarâika,â he groaned. She didnât know what it meant, but she liked his tone when he said it. âYou forget something this morning?â
She smiled and bit her lip. âHmm?â she hummed innocently, like she hadnât forgone her underwear. âOh, no. Not for the past three.â
And there it was: that little tooka tilt she adored.
âKara,â he breathed her name like a prayer, then stood from the bed.Â
âFox,â she answered, sitting up on her elbows and letting her knees fall apart. âYouâre wearing too much.â
He chuckled. âMaybe.â
But then he was grabbing her hips and pulling her to the edge of the bed. He dropped to his knees before her and guided her legs over his shoulders as she gasped, and wasted no more time.
âOh, Gods!â she cried as he wrapped his lips around her clit, her hands instantly finding and clawing through his curls.Â
He kissed and licked and sucked at her like a man possessed. He was constantly moving. Just when he would fall into a rhythm, and she could feel the heat building in her core, he would change again, setting her climax back a few steps.
It was maddening.
Fox
It felt good to be right. Fox knew sheâd taste amazing. He couldnât explain how it was so different from the previous partner heâd had with this set of sexual organs, but it was.
He could die right here and now, and heâd consider it a good death.
Better yet, heâd prefer to live, as long as he got to spend as much time as possible with his head between her thighs, his nose buried in her white thatch of curls, with her hands grasping at the roots of his hair, his name rolling off her tongue over and over again between sighs and gasps and moans.
âFox!â she cried out, fingernails digging into his scalp. âOh, kriff!â
Then she was bucking even harder against his mouth, chasing the pleasure he was oh so willing to give her. She was moaning, her voice higher than normal and breathy.
He released the grasp he had on one of her hips, sliding it down to meet his tongue at her opening, and pressed into her still fluttering walls with two fingers, eased by her orgasm.
She gasp, hand tightening, tugging at his hair.
âF-Fox!â
He pressed his fingers deeper in, then hooked them up. Her back arched off the bed, with her deep, carnal moan. He wiggled his fingers, brushing against that powerful little spot within her.
Kara
She didnât know if theyâd been there mere minutes or hours, but he kept working her through a second orgasm, and she was getting close to a third.
âFox,â she half-sobbed. âPlease, I-I canât.â
âCome on, Princess,â he growled against her aching opening. âI think youâve got one more.â
She moaned as he flicked his tongue against her swollen, pulsing bundle of nerves. âI canât,â she whimpered. âFox, please!â
âOne more, cyarâika,â he coaxed. âI know you can.â
He stood, still pressing his fingers against that delicious, over-sensitive spot within her, brushing against her clit with his thumb while he drew her into a searing kiss. She could taste her own juices all over his tongue as it delved into her mouth, and she moaned around it.
âCome on, Kara,â he encouraged her. âLet go.â
âFox!â
âThatâs it, Princess,â he hummed. âGive it up.â
âW-wantâ oh, godsâ want you inside me,â she pleaded between the moans he seemed intent on pulling out. âN-need you, Fox, please.â
He pressed his lips against her neck, just below her ear. âGive me one more, and Iâll fuck you as long as you like.â
A shudder rolled through her, and before she could even heave one more breath, everything shifted.Â
Heâd pushed another finger into her, moving his hand faster, harder against that sweet spot, his palm grinding down against her clit. She could feel that familiar fire building again. He was nipping and sucking at her neck, and she hoped he was leaving marks. And he was moaning, oh gods, his low rumbling moans, and then she was in free fall.
Her entire body went stiff and shaking, hips bucking against his unending motion, back arching off the bed.
The fire burned and burned until it reached her pussy, and she couldnât stop it and, suddenly, it was bursting forward, gushing out of her, spraying all over the bed, Fox, his armor, and her vision was whiting outâ
âThatâs it, cyarâika,â Foxâs voice finally pierced through the ringing in her ears. âThatâs it. You did so well for me.â
Hazily, she recognized that heâd pulled her up onto the bed and crawled up next to her. He stroked her hair, pulling away the sweat-damp strands that framed her face with such light, delicate movements that she almost sobbed.
âF-Fox.â Her voice was so shaky, barely more than a whisper.
âYes, Princess?â
âI love you.â
Fox
His brain was flying at a million miles per minute because kriff she was so beautiful like this, all covered in sweat, panting, face and chest painted lilac, her pale green eyes staring up at him like heâd hung the stars in the galaxy, and he was drenched in her orgasm, the orgasm heâd pulled out of her, and kriff that was hot andâ
âF-Fox,â she breathed.
âYes, Princess?â he answered, unable to fight back the adoration he could feel seeping into his tone.
âI love you.â
Oh. Maybe she had crushed his head between her strong thighsâdefinitely not a bad way to goâbecause he couldnât have heard that right.
âFox?â Her voice was still so quiet, but almost gentler. âI know we havenât even known each other for a full month, but itâs true. Iâm in love with you.â
She was⌠in love. With him? There had to be something he wasnât getting right.
âAnd it's not just because of- of all that,â she continued nervously. âThat was incredibleâ you are incredible. Gods, please say something.â
âIâm in love with you, too.â
The words came rushing out of his mouth, but they were true.
The sound she left out was somewhere between a sob and a laugh.
âI love you, Fox,â she sighed, her fingers coming up to his face to gently trace the scar across his face.Â

Foxâs demeanor changed immediately. He pulled away from her, and she tried not to mourn the loss of the moment.
âGet inside your closet,â he said, his voice low. âDonât come out unless I come and get you.â
âWaitââ
âKara,â he said. His tone held no room for defiance.
She nodded, moving away. She grabbed a hair stick from her bag and tucked herself in the small, dark space, straining to listen. She could only catch bits and pieces.
ââ the hell are you ââ
ââin the system â Iâd come ââ
âYou kriffing diâkut!â
The door slammed shut, and Fox huffed loudly.Â
She heard footsteps going through her door, opening and closing it, then approaching the closet.Â
âItâs alright, Princessââ Foxâs annoyed face melted into mild amusement as he saw her makeshift weapon. âNot bad,â he hummed in approval, making her cheeks warm. She was certain that her face was rapidly shifting toÂ
He huffed again. âItâs just the diâkutlaââ Another huff. âJedi Master Vos. This is⌠his safe house.â
He offered his hand to help her out of the cramped closet, which she accepted gratefully.
âFair warning, though,â Fox grumbled. âVos is⌠kaysh mirsh solusâ heâs a lot.â
She bit her lip to avoid laughing at his tone as he brought her to the main room, where Master Vos was helping himself to a ration.
The Jedi straightened upright, then bowed deeply.Â
âPrincess Ieta,â he said.
âJedi Master Vos,â she replied.
âIâve heard precious little about you, your highness,â he continued. âThe good Commander here has been unreachable.â
âIâve been gone a week,â Fox deadpanned. âYou were part of the mission briefing. You know everything about her that I do.â
âThatâs not true, now is it, Commander?â Vos grinned, lifting one hand to wriggle his fingers at him. âAfter all, youâve spent an entire week with the Princess.â
Whatever Fox realized made him growl and hiss âshabuirâ under his breath.
She glanced sideways at him, then back at the Jedi. She wasnât getting a particularly positive impression of this Jedi, as she had with the others she had met. And more pressingly, she didnât particularly enjoy the way Fox seemed like he wanted to throw him out in the snow.
âIâve heard enough about you, Master Vos,â she said, adopting her Princess persona. âAre you here for any⌠actual purpose? News about the ongoing invasion of my planet? Or the attempts on my life, perhaps? Or did you just come to irritate my guard?â
Master Vosâ brow raised, and a smirk spread across his face. He glanced at Fox, then back to her.Â
Suddenly, something seemed to pull at the hair stick in her hand, sending it clattering to the floor.
âVos,â Fox snapped.
âOh,â Vos said, stooping to one knee in front of her and picking up the stick. His movements seemed to stutter before he handed it back to her. âMustnât lose such an important part of your ceremonial jewelry.â
âThank you, Master Vos,â she said carefully. âNow, do you have everything you were looking for? Or must you... dig further?â
From the corner of her eye, she could see Fox turn towards her.
âYes, I believe I do,â Vos said, bowing his head slightly. âIt was very nice to meet you, your highness.â
âLikewise, Master Jedi,â she said, even if she didnât really mean it.
Vos wrapped his arm around Foxâs back, walking them both to the doorway.
Fox
âYou did good, Foxy,â Vos whispered as soon as they turned away from Kara. âI mean it; I think youâre right for each other.â
Fox waited until theyâd stepped out onto the porch before shoving Vos away from him. âDo you hear yourself?â he hissed. âSheâs a kriffing princessââ
âSave it, Fox,â Vos shrugged and waved his gloveless fingers at him again. âThe visions donât lie. I already know that your normal self-flagellation is turned up to a hundred, and that you want her.âÂ
âGet away from me,â Fox huffed. âYou know nothââ
âAh-ah-ah. I know she wants you, too,â Vos laughed as he started, back into the woods to disappear. âGet your kovânyn out of your shebs already.â
Fox scowled as the shadow slinked back into the night, taking a steadying breath as he returned to the cabin. It was going to be a long mission.
Day 3
Theme: Tension
Prompts: ⧠close call ⧠almost kiss ⧠injury ⧠sexual tension ⧠duty over relationship â§
@clonexocweek
Word Count: 994
Content: homesickness, putting the "almost kiss" prompt to use, some self-deprecation on Fox's part (I don't think there will be a single chapter without it honestly)
Fox had been nearly silent while prepping for landing, and since then had switched back into the aloof Commander sheâd slowly eased him out of.
Once theyâd landed in the snow-filled clearing, and she stepped down from the shipâs ramp, Kara nearly sobbed.Â
She imagined the field would be flooded with tall grasses and wildflowers in the summer, and the lake next to the small building would sparkle in the nearest sunâs light.Â
The building itself wasnât elaborate. It seemed a bit old, and it was made of simpler materialsâwood logs and stoneârather than the durasteel, duracrete, and transperisteel of most modern buildings.
It reminded her so much of her village that it made her chest ache.Â
âWait here,â was the first thing heâd said in nearly an hour.Â
And she had, watching him through the viewport as he circled the cottage before entering, pistols raised cautiously.Â
After his search was satisfied, he returned to the ship, picked up her meager luggage, and led her to the house.Â
The entryway opened up to the main room with a worn sofa and sparse kitchenette on one side, and two bedrooms and a refresher on the other.Â
It was cozy and rustic, and it made her mind travel all those light-years away to Myso.Â
âPrincess Ieta,â Fox's voice rumbled through his helmet. âThe rooms are the same size, but this one,â he pointed to the closest door, âhas nicer accommodations.â
âAlright,â she nodded. She couldnât make herself call him by his title anymore, but something had so clearly changed for him that she didnât want to make him uncomfortable with just his name.Â
He took her trunk into the room. It was relatively plain. The double bed was nice enough, though lacking bedding.Â
âMy source left a message, your highness,â Fox said, as though he could hear her thoughts. âThe bedding is in the closet and was cleaned by the caretaker less than a ten-day ago.â
She nodded again, hoping that if he somehow could hear her thoughts, he would hear that she was sorry for whatever sheâd done wrong, that she wanted to go back to how they were yesterday.Â
Perhaps it was silly or foolish, but she missed the Fox she was getting to know.Â
âIâll let you get settled, your highness,â he said. âThe only heat in this building comes from the fireplace. Iâll get that started, then Iâll unload the other supplies.â
âThank you,â she hummed, trying to smile.Â
He gave something between a nod and a shallow bow, then left the room, swinging the door shut behind him.Â
Fox
Fox wouldnât allow himself to think about anything until the fire was lit and the supplies unloaded.Â
It would be easier that way, of course. Sometimes he greatly preferred not thinking, like when he was on Chancellor duty or sitting through meetings he didnât have to participate in. Those times, he usually felt more like a potted plant than a living, breathing personâjust like the longnecks wanted.Â
But then the fire was lit and loaded with firewood, and the few crates were inside. The planetâs sun had long since set. If he had to guess, it was likely late evening. And Kara was still in the other room.Â
Kriff.
The Princess Ieta of Kytu was still in the other room.Â
Diâkut.
Maybe, if heâd never started calling her by name, he wouldnât have hurt her.Â
He shouldâve seen the slope before he started to slip.Â
He was trained better than this. He, specifically, was trained by Alpha-17 to follow his instincts, which heâd been told were usually correct.
So why were his instincts screaming to knock on her door?Â
His feet were moving before he could think better of it. His hand lifted and knocked softly before he could stop it.Â
He was met with silence.Â
Another knock.
âPrincessââ
The door opened, and he was face-to-face with her. Her expression was neutral in that way people do when they donât want you to know how they feel.Â
âYes⌠Commander?â Her voice was soft, but something about her using his rank rather than his name felt spiky.Â
âIâ I just wanted to make sure you were alright,â he said. Â
She watched him for a moment. Her gaze seemed to bore straight through his helmet. He knew she couldnât see his face, but it still felt like she could.
âMaâam?â he tried.Â
âWill you please remove your helmet, Commander?â she said suddenly, her voice lifting into what heâd come to understand as her âofficialâ voice, then shifting back slightly as she added, âIf youâre comfortable.â
He hesitated. Then quietly hated himself for hesitating. They might have only known each other for a week, and he knew he should keep his distance, but it was her. He wanted to do anything she asked, and this was almost an order.
He pulled his bucket off.
âYes, maâam,â he murmured.
And then she stepped closer to him, close enough that had it been anyone else in the galaxy, he wouldâve moved away.
âCall me by my name again?â she whispered. âPlease, I-Iâm sorry for whatever I did wrongââ
Wait, what?
âI didnât mean to upset you, and if Iâm being tooâ If Iâm stepping over your boundarââ
His hand lifted to cup her cheek, stopping her sentence with a soft gasp.
âYou didnât do anything wrong,â he told her, his thumb stroking idly against her cheek. He wished he had taken off his glove to feel her soft skin beneath his hand.Â
âKara, I⌠I hurt you. I hurt everyone around me if IâŚ. Y-you donât deserve that,â he continued.
âYou wonât hurt me,â she said, her eyes falling to his lips in a way that made his stomach lurch. âI wonât let you.â
Before he could stop himself, he leaned forward, and she did too, her eyes fluttering shut.
She nearly jumped, mere centimeters from his lips, as a loud thunking echoed from the door.
The sound cut into his mind, pulling him to consciousness. His body reacted before his mind could.Â
He gasped as his eyes recognized his hand wrapped tightly around Karaâs wrist.Â
Kriff.Â
He released her. âI-Iâm so sorry, I didnât meanââ
âNo, no,â she said, holding up her hands. âItâs alright. I snuck up on you.â
He scowled, reaching for her arm. She let him pull it closer so he could inspect it. He could see the outline of his hand. Little lilac lines against her pale blue.Â
Kriff. Diâkut. Kriffing diâkut.
âOh, donât growl, Fox,â she chuckled. He hadnât realized he had. âIt didnât hurt, and I donât bruise easily. Kytuan skin takes a little longer to go back to normal.â
âI couldâve hurt you,â he said, still staring at the imprint of his hand.Â
Her eyes narrowed slightly, but her smile didnât fade. âNo, I donât think you could.â
He blinked up at her. He mustâve been making a face because she laughed as she walked away.Â
âHyperspace alarm went off,â she said.Â
Kara
As she felt the shipâs light lurch as it came out of hyperspace, she stared down at the imprint of Foxâs hand. It had startled her at first, but he seemed so rattled by it, and really it hadnât hurt.Â
But as she gazed down at the fading mark, something within her stirred. She couldn't quite put a name to it. Maybe it was because he hadnât been wearing his gloves. This was the first time their skin had ever touched. It sent a bolt of lightning through her body.Â
It had been so long since someone simply touched her. Sure, there were the occasional handshakes, but she didnât have a partner. She hadnât had one sinceâŚ
âKara.â
She spun, opening the door to see Foxâs âsurprisedâ faceâshe was learning his expressions were muted, so a slightly raised brow was the only indication.
âWeâll be landing soon?â she asked.
âYeah. Maybe ten minutes,â he answered. âAre you alright?â
âYes, Iâm fine,â she said, somewhat curiously. âI was just getting my things in order.â
Foxâs brow furrowed. His hand lifted so he was nearly touching her cheek before he hesitated and pulled it back. âYouâre crying,â he said.Â
The words processed slowly as she wished that he hadnât pulled away. He was so close to her, only a few short inches away.Â
She lifted her hand to her cheek, feeling the dampness beneath her fingers.Â
âOh,â she said, somewhat dumbly.Â
Fox cleared his throat. âIâll be in the cockpit prepping for landing if you need anything, your highness.â
She watched him go, along with the connection she thought theyâd both been feeling.Â
Fox
Fox had always been sure that he was an asshole, and many had told him as much, but none of it compared to everything his mind screamed at him as he saw her crying.Â
He got too comfortable, too loose. Thatâs why heâd always been so rigid. The people around himâvod or natbornâneeded to be protected from him.Â
He wasnât destined for a good life. He wasnât destined for anything more than a death in the service of a society that didnât even see him as a real person.Â
He had started to feel connected to Kaâto the Princess through what heâd learned. But there was a difference heâd refused to acknowledge the day before. The Dakynians fought for and earned their freedom. They were acknowledged as people, given rights. That would never happen for him and his vode. He wasnât sure enough of them would even live long enough to see it.Â
He settled his helmet back over his head before returning to the cockpit. He needed to get his head back on the mission. This wasnât a vacation; he was protecting a politician from threats against her life while his vode fought for her planetâs freedom. And he was here, flirting with a kriffing princess.
He knew he needed to back off. He knew he was here to protect her against all threats. He knew that included himself.
The Princess had been asking him questions all day. It started after an incredibly cheery âgood morningâ that filled his chest with cozy fluff, and led straight into asking if she could ask him questions. He filed that away in his mental console under âShe Doesnât Understand That Sheâs the Bossââa rapidly growing file.Â
He nodded his assent and shrugged it away. Natborns were usually curious, and it was always a good way to judge a personâs character.Â
Not long after his first sip of caf was the first.Â
âDoes your armor differ greatly from the other troopers?â
He glanced up at her. âNo, my kit is standard,â he said. âMy helmet is a bit specialized.â
âWhat about the⌠the fabric on your legs?
âKamas.â
âKamas,â she echoed. âI think one of the commanders I met had them, and the captain, but not the other commander.â
Fox rolled his eyes. âCommander Cody thinks they get in the way.â
âDo they?â she pressed, her lips quirking up in amusement.Â
âOnly if you prefer kicking droids to shooting them.â
Later, when he was cleaning his DCs, she poked her head into the cargo hold.Â
âDo you know any other languages?â
âYes,â he answered simply. He flicked his eyes up to look at her, thenârealizing sheâd just wait for him to elaborateâadded âthe little bits of Mandoâa the trainers taught Gen-1. Even less binary.â
âYour trainers were Mandalorian?â she asked.Â
âA few of them.â
Then, while she picked at a ration bar, she asked, âWhat will you do after?â
âAfter?â he echoed.
âAfter the war,â she clarified.
He almost repeated her, out of sheer disbelief.Â
He met her eyesâwide, pale green, beautiful eyesâand they locked onto his immediately. So curious that the intensity felt like it was burning him. With his helmet, he could stare down a rancor, but without it, the vulnerability tended to overtake him.
âIâve never thought about it,â he finally answered. It wasnât a total lie. It wasnât just that he hadnât thought about it; it was that heâd never allowed himself to think about it.
Her face melted, the curiosity fallen from her eyes, but she waited silently.Â
Nervousness started to bubble in his chest.
âIâmâ we were made for this. For war. Made to fight and die so⌠real people donât get hurt.â
ââReal peopleâ?â The words fell from her lips in a whisper.
âThe citizens of the Galactic Republic,â he clarified.Â
âThe citizensâ I-I donât understand,â she stammered. âYou are a person. Youâre a citizen!â
His brows raised. âWeâ the clones are⌠property of the Republic.â
She surged forward, dropped to her knees in front of him, and gripped his hands tightly. Almost instantly, he was more concerned about getting blaster residue and cleaning oil on her pretty hands than about his status as a sentient being.
âWe are real people, Fox,â she insisted, a small crack in her voice. âWe are real people.â
Fox stared down at her, at her small hands in his and the way he could feel the chill of them through his gloves, at the tears pooling in her eyes, at the conviction in her expression, at the shaky way her lips struggled to pull into a soft smile.Â
âWe are real,â she repeated, her voice hardly more than a whisper.Â
He gave one slow nod, and she took a deep breath. He fought the urge to chase after her hands as she pulled them away and got back to her feet.Â
âIâll be in the cockpit if you need anything,â she said.Â
Before he could say anything, she disappeared back through the tiny ship.Â
Fox let out a breath he didnât know heâd been holding. She said, âWeâ. âWe are people", she had said, not just âyouâ.
He grabbed his datapad to begin his research.Â
His search for âKytu warâ returned endless results for news on the Separatist invasion of the planet. He dug deeper and deeper until he finally saw it: an article from nearly a year ago.Â
Kytu elects Dakynian as Princess Ieta
After three decades of war and countless more of subjugation before that, Kara Serisi, a Dakynian, will be crowned as the Princess Ieta next Primeday, which will be the fourth anniversary of the end of the Dakyni Revolt.Â
âThe date of the future Princess Ietaâs coronation was set by custom,â the Duchess Cheva of the Mouth told a packed room of reporters. âMs. Serisiâs race was not a factor in any of the decisions made about the event.â
When asked for comment, Serisi only stated, âI am truly honored to be Kytuâs next Princess Ieta. I hope to bridge the divide and help Queen Amadi to bring all of us together as a planet.â
Despite winning the vote by a landslide, Belsi was a controversial candidate, having been one of the most visible leaders of the modern Dakyni rebels.Â
An image appeared. In the midst of burning rubble, Kara stood, mid-shout and defiant. Her clothes were torn. She held an energy bow at her side. The sparse armor she had was worn almost to the point of uselessness. Her hair was braided back, but dirty enough that he mightâve mistaken it for a darker color than her stark white of it now. A series of blue war paint was dotted around her eyes.
She was glorious, standing openly defiant of a system that had harmed her and her people for hundreds of years. Heâd noted the way the article hinted at ill intent, and how this holo image of Kara could be seen as unflattering at the least, but he felt what many Dakynians likely felt if they saw it: pride and awe.
The article continued, discussing the divide between the Kamatuans and the Dakynian peoples, as well as several commentatorsâ mostly negative opinions of the Dakynians. And, in the face of all of it, all she showed wasÂ
Fox set the datapad down, shutting his eyes tightly. Disgust and rage boiled in his gut.Â
He took a deep breath, then another, then went to the cockpit.Â
She sat in the copilotâs seat, knees pulled up to her chest, staring out into the streaky glow of hyperspace.Â
âKara?â
She nearly jumped, her head whipping back to look at him. Her eyes were wide and watery.Â
âI didnât mean to startle you,â he said, moving to sit sideways in the pilotâs seat. âAre you okay?â
Diâkut, he scolded himself. Does she look okay?
She looked beautiful, even with the tears streaking down her cheeks. Actually, Fox was pretty sure it was physically impossible for her not to look beautiful. Diâkut.
She let out a soft laugh, using the heels of her palms to wipe her eyes. âYes, I-Iâll be alright. And you didnât startle me. It was just that youâd never used my name before.â
Oh. He probably shouldnât mention that heâd imagined saying her name a thousand times in a thousand ways.Â
âAnyway, itâs not a big deal,â she continued, waving her hand like she was trying to shoo away a bug. âLetâs just forget abââ
âI know about the war,â he said without thinking. âAbout what the Kamatuans did to your people.â
Her eyes squeezed shut. âWe donât have to talk about this,â she whispered.
He reached forwardâmoving on gut instinct rather than any sort of thoughtâand took her hands in his, just as she had.Â
âI wonât make you talk about it if thatâs not what you want,â he told her. âBut we have a bit more in common than I thought. And Iâm willing to listen if youââ
His sentence was cut off as she tackled him, her arms wrapping around his neck.
Kara
Kara couldnât sleep. She suspected that if their departure from Coruscant hadnât been so rushed, he likely wouldâve done research about her, learning whatever he could before ever meeting her. He struck her as one whoâd want all the information he could get.
Heâd been entertaining her many questions, but hadnât asked much of his own. He barely knew a single trivial thing about her, and now he knew the heaviest part of her life, her greatest burden.
But heâd seen her in it. Heâd been confronted with it, learned about it, and still came to sit with her. He was possibly one of the kindest people sheâd met. She wasnât sure he knew that.
As she turned over in the small bunk for what felt like the hundredth time, she sighed. It was clear that she wouldnât be sleeping this night cycle.
She pushed the slightly scratchy blanket off her, slipping her feet down into her plain, flat shoes. Once sheâd wrapped the blanket around her, she left the tiny compartment, shuffling to the tiny workbench that was functioning as a makeshift kitchen.
While she waited for the water to heat for the horrible instant caf they had on board, she made a mental note to find a way to get good caf as soon as she could.
She settled herself in the copilotâs seat, staring out at hyperspace. She figured it was the closest thing to stargazing as she could get at the moment.Â
She hadnât been able to see the stars since sheâd moved to Kytesa City.Â
âYou like the lights?â Foxâs rumbling voice came from behind her.Â
She smiled as he flopped into the seat next to her.Â
âSomething like that,â she shrugged.Â
Sheâd expected that to be the end of the conversation until she found another curiosity to poke him with.Â
âWe never really saw the stars much before leaving Kamino,â he continued.Â
She turned towards him, shock hitting her multiple times. Not only had he shared more than sheâd asked, but he had also removed the armor pieces from his waist up.Â
She hadnât been able to see the way the dark fabric hugged the ridges of his body, outlining each powerful muscle beneath it. She hadnât seen the small scars that nicked across his fingers and the backs of his hands. She wondered if his hands were warm. Sheâd been curious as to what lay beneath the armor; now, she wondered the same about the undersuit.Â
She turned back to the viewport, hoping the streaking blue lights would hide the purplish flush of her cheeks. Gods below, she shouldnât let her mind wander there, even if it was excellent material for a daydream.Â
âDid you?â
She blinked. Had she missed something he said?
âSee the stars?â he clarified. âFrom your world.â
âOh yes,â she smiled. âWell, in some places. I live in our capital, now, and itâs too bright to see much, but my homeâmy village⌠yes.â
âMyso, right?â Fox asked next.
She felt her face and chest warm. âYes, Myso,â she said.Â
âWill you tell me about it?â he hummed.Â
âMy village?â she asked. âThereâs not much to tell.â
âYour village, your planet,â he shrugged. âMayen.â
Somethingâhis tone probablyâtold her to look at him. He kept his eyes forward, but half-lidded. He looked less rigid than he normally did. He looked tired. She wondered if he had trouble sleeping, too.Â
âGedetâyeâplease.â
The word came out so softâquiet with a hint of a crackâthat she thought sheâd imagined it.Â
âMyso, my home, is small,â she told him, her voice gentle. âEverybody knows everybody. You give what you can and get what you need.â
She watched as his eyes slid shut and took the opportunity to enjoy the look of peace that seemed to fall over him as she continued.
was watching a docuseries about Mormons and two of the women looked so much like a friend of mine that I did like a triple take and then texted her to make sure she wasnât actually a Mormon

It wasnât that Kara was bored, exactly. She had numerous holovids and novels on her datapad, but they werenât quite as interesting as the man sitting in the pilotâs seat.
The ship didnât really have a galley, so theyâd taken to eating their meals in the cockpit.Â
Well, she had anyway, and she was beginning to believe that Fox never removed his helmet. Or at least, not in front of civilians.Â
It piqued her curiosity, though. Her sample size was limited to about four troopers, and the other three had their helmets stowed on their belt or under their arm when sheâd met them.Â
Regardless, they were halfway through their hyperspace jump, and she hadnât seen the man eat or drink anything. Of course, he could have been eating and drinking when she wasnât nearby or maybe when she was sleeping, but it was better to be safe than sorry.Â
âCommander?â she hummed from the copilotâs seat.Â
âYes?âÂ
She smiled, pleased that he had stopped calling her âmaâamâ. âIâve been curious about something, but Iâm not sure if itâs impolite to ask.â
A small nod.Â
âDo most troopers keep their helmets on around civilians?â
If she hadnât known better, she mightâve thought heâd been frozen in carbonite. When he finally started moving again, it was so slow she almost missed it.Â
So achingly, agonizingly slowly, he raised his hands to his helmet.Â
âNo,â he said quietly, then he lifted it off.Â
A few curls fell in front of his eyes, which he quickly tried to brush to the side, revealing intense brown eyes that searched her like a puzzle he couldnât quite put together. A long scar stretched over his nose and the tops of his cheeks.Â
âThank you,â she whispered.Â
He blinked a few times, his brow furrowing so minutely.Â
âI did nothing to warrant any thanks, maâam,â he said after a moment.Â
âYou trusted me,â she countered. âAnd you can put it back on if you prefer, but I like seeing you.â
And there was the tiny tilt of his head she was growing to like.Â
Fox
âDo you mind if I call you âFoxâ?â she asked, as though she hadnât just turned his understanding of the natborn world on its head. âYou hadnât mentioned a preference, and I didnât want to be disrespectful.â
He continued just staring at her, unable to open his mouth.Â
Her eyes narrowed, scrunching up her nose slightly, smile still present. Fox felt as though the air had been punched out of his lungs. Kriff. He was starting to understand Bly and Codyâs tipsy discussions about the differences between âprettyâ and âcuteâ.
âAll I ask is that you consider it, at least,â she continued, her gaze drifting back down her datapad. âIt seems weâre going to spend a considerable amount of time together, and Iâd like it if we could be more akin to friends than a Princess and a Commander.â
She didnât continue after that, and he couldnât seem to open his mouth to tell her that she could call him âyou stupid bastardâ for the rest of their time together, and it wouldnât bother him. Or that he would like being near her in any capacity, so if being friends is what she wanted, heâd happily go along with it.Â
Even if thatâs all she ever wanted to be with him. Diâkut, he hissed at himself because she was a Princess, andâwhile he might be of a high rankâhe was just a soldier. That was all heâd ever be.
