Loving him hurt. It was fighting. It was more than hardwork. It was sacrifice. It was talking less so he would hold you when we went to bed. It was nodding when he yelled so the argument would stop. It was giving him your phone even when you had nothing to hide but he didn’t trust you. Loving him hurt. We give up parts of ourselves for people who don’t deserve it. Wash away the things we like in the shower and watch it be swallowed whole by the drain. I wear my hair up now; something he hated. I don’t care too much about that anymore. I just wish I could stop calling him. One day his new girlfriend might answer the phone and I know I’ll hear it in her voice. I’ll hear how she’s forgetting who she used to be and how no matter how badly you love someone, you can over love them too.
