“If you get any closer to that you’re going to be a part of it.” Alex couldn’t help but joke. “Though I can see the appeal. I love watching the flames licking at the wood. There’s something therapeutic about it.”

“Want to know a secret? Sometimes I wish I was a pyrokinetic just so I could do just that,” Dallas chuckled softly. “But there really is, isn’t there? And of course it gives off that lovely warmth and glow. Fire can be very relaxing if controlled like this.”

“Somehow, I think we would get the blame for the fire going out if we did that.” Emma said, “Do you think any of these sticks would be of any use? If we can’t find anything soon we can go back,” 

Sof laughed as she caught the ball, “Anytime.” She said before throwing it back to him. “Did they at least have good excuses?”

“Did they say what kind of firewood they needed?” Aspen asked as they moved through the forest. “Surely all these twigs won’t be useful, right?” 

“Well, what the fuck do I do?”

“I... I don’t know,” Dallas admitted. “We need to figure out some way to distract it or get it to move elsewhere. Any ideas?”

“If the sun wasn’t going down right now I could probably roast these without a fire. You on the other hand, can’t you do it any time you’d like?” he wondered randomly with a laugh as he twirled the stick so the marshmallow could roast from the other side.

“No sudden movements, Sloane,” he told the other as he eyed the skunk that was right in their path. “I don’t exactly want to bathe in tomato juice tonight.”

“What I don’t understand is how they mess this up every single year.” Emma responded to the rant with a shake of her head. “Seriously, how many times do you need to do something before you realise you might need to be a bit more prepared?” She ranted, it was easy to get her started. Emma gestured to the small pile in her arms, “Not much,” She replied, “All they have over here are too small.”

“Thanks for humoring me,” he told the other as they continued to pass a ball back and forth. “My friends either blew me off with different excuses,” Dallas added.

“I’m not too sure why they sent us out to do this... surely there had to be someone more qualified right?” he rambled to the other. “So, you find anything yet?”

Nora arched her eyebrows as the other sat in the booth across from her. She hadn’t invited him, nor did she really want to start a conversation in the midst of typing up her latest article. “Did I invite you to sit here?” She questioned, picking up the cup of coffee to her side and taking a sip. “To answer your question,” she began, “I work part time at the animal shelter. Someone once adopted a cat in the morning, and they’d returned it by the afternoon because they, quote, didn’t like the smell.” She grinned, remembering the look on her manager’s face that day.

“You didn’t– sorry,” he slid himself back out of the booth. “Bad habit I really shouldn’t have developed but something my coworkers and I do when our shifts are over– just usually with other coworkers. Once again... my bad. Can I get you a free coffee? I’m off work now but I feel guilty,” Dallas added sheepishly. “Wait– you’re joking!” his eyes widened at the story. “How could they just give the cat back like it meant nothing to them?”

“That sounds like a really hard way to start life but at least you had someone who really loved you.” Alex said warmly. “I’m glad you got that.” Perhaps that was a little strange to say but it was true. “Have you… ever looked for your birth parents?”

“Yeah, Timothy was a good man,” he sighed wistfully, more to himself. “No,” Dallas admitted. “They clearly didn’t want me so I saw no reason to search for them. And even if I wanted to, I don’t know where I’d start– you know? I have nothing to start from.”

“Lies.” He stated with a little chuckle despite himself. “You’re welcome. I just… speak it as I find it. At least most of the time anyway.” 

“I know. I’m rather lucky you only seem to have nice things to say about me, huh?” Dallas couldn’t help but chuckle.

“Not great,” She spoke honestly, “Apparently, I am just a barista who doesn’t know anything and did you know that decaf is stronger than actual coffee? Complete news to me.” Sofìa said, a roll of her eyes following easily. “Are people the same for you? It’s like… this is our job. We get paid to know these things.” 

“You-… ran into a glass door? Didn’t you?” Danny guessed, trying to hold back his chuckles and disguise them as a cough as a few escaped. “I imagine it was pretty comical to witness, the outcome not so comical however.” He added, moving closer to look at the others face, inspecting his nose, “I have to say, you can’t tell however, doesn’t seem to cause any offence when look at your face.”

“I... yeah I did,” he admitted with a little sigh, his head hanging in embarrassment as the other began to laugh. “You’re the worst– shut up,” Dallas gave him a light shove. “Nope. It was pretty broken but I’m grateful it wasn’t impossible to fix. You can still see a little lump here,” he pointed, “But other than that it’s pretty good.”
