Seven recent non-objective paintings, acrylic, pencil and gesso on corrugated cardboard rounds, eleven inches diameter: Popova, Malevich, Rodchenko, Dove, de Kooning, Hofmann, Hartigan.  Each one named for an abstract painter I admire, none of them a copy of their work nor an attempt to imitate their style.

I made eight drawings of Derron Thweatt this last weekend during the two three hour sessions he posed for the artsaveslives group organized by Thomasina DeMaio.  During the last hour he posed for the portrait at the top of the post.  I’ve made many drawings of Derron, but few as satisfying for me in the quality of the likeness.  I hope it was as equally difficult and pleasurable for him sitting as it was for me drawing.

After my East Coast break I returned to Life Drawing at Eureka Valley Rec.  The models yesterday were Shane Diva & Aaron Ness, two contrasting bodies & characters: Shane being slender & mermaidesque, Aaron being stocky, muscled & pierced; both worth long looking, each in their own way.  Kind of like Jack Smith’s Mermaid & Werewolf in Normal Love, my favorite sequence.

A couple of IraCohenesque photos presumably by Jack Smith, the first one of Beverly Grant for sure, the other appears to be Jack himself (though whose hands?) all courtesy of Gladstone, the Estate and the Archive .

Beginning of a new video, this part shot a year and a half ago or more, but pretty much as I envisioned. Desolation back in the old home, folk dying, end of the world, all that.  Many thanks to Wesley Lank for assisting and performing and to Ernest Tubb for his immortal song.

Two drawings of Derron Thweatt from yesterday afternoon’s session at Eureka Valley Rec.  I especially enjoyed making the one of him with his chin in his hand; easy enough, so assured in pose and drawing, simple and elegant. Thanks to Thomasina for the opportunity to draw him again.
