Since 2007, the National Football League has hosted the International Series regular season games in London, England, as part of the league’s mission to expand its popularity outside of the United States. The success of the International Series has led the NFL to explore the possibility of placing an NFL franchise in London, or even hosting a Super Bowl at Wembley Stadium.
Or... they could just relaunch NFL Europe (which previously shut down its operations back in 2007). My idea for the new NFL Europe will have 18 teams throughout Europe, as opposed to the six teams they had (mostly in Germany) when the original NFL Europe closed down. And yes, that includes a London franchise. So here’s what I think the new NFL Europe will look like:
Amsterdam Admirals -- Johan Cruyff ArenA
Brussels Bruisers -- King Baudouin Stadium
Dublin Voyagers -- Croke Park or Aviva Stadium
London Monarchs -- Tottenham Hotspur Stadium or Twickenham Stadium
Paris Revolution -- Stade de France (Saint-Denis, France) or Parc des Princes
Scottish Claymores -- Murrayfield Stadium (Edinburgh, Scotland)
Berlin Thunder -- Olympiastadion
Frankfurt Galaxy -- Commerzbank-Arena
Hamburg Sea Devils -- Volksparkstadion
FC Bayern Munich American Football -- Allianz Arena
Rhein Fire -- Merkur Spiel-Arena (Dusseldorf, Germany)
Vienna Warriors -- Ernst-Happel-Stadion
Athens Olympians -- Olympic Stadium of Athens “Spyros Louis”
Barcelona Dragons -- RCDE Stadium
Real Madrid Futbol Americano -- Wanda Metropolitano
Marseilles Mariners -- Orange Velodrome
Milan Vulcans -- San Siro
Rome Centurions -- Stadio Olimpico di Roma
Each team will play a 14-game schedule: twice against divisional opponents (10 games), and once against four non-divisional opponents
Eight teams (three divisional winners and the top five wild-cards -- teams with the best win-loss records among non-division winners) qualify for the NFL Europe playoffs.
The playoffs will be single-elmination
Based on win-loss record, the three division winners will be seeded 1st through 3rd, and the top five wild-card teams will be seeded 4th through 8th
Quarterfinals: #1 seed vs. #8 seed; #4 seed vs. #5 seed; #3 seed vs. #6 seed; and #2 seed vs. #7 seed
Semifinals: Winner of #1/#8 game vs. Winner of #4/#5 game; and Winner of #3/#6 game vs. Winner of #2/#7 game
The two winning teams from the semifinal games face each other in the NFL Europe Championship Game (should I call it the World Bowl like in the old NFL Europe?)
And that’s my idea for resurrecting NFL Europe. I doubt Commissioner Roger Goodell will even think about this, but we call all dream, right?
