Now’s as good a time as any to bring it up, I suppose, she told herself bracingly, as Roshaun dug into the waffles with great enthusiasm. Maybe it’s some weird Sun Lord thing he’s not allowed to talk about, but if so, he probably just won’t answer…

"Roshaun?"

"Yes, Dairine?" The tone of his response, though as haughty as ever, lacked something of the harsh edge it had had in past weeks—it was clear that the events on the Sun had made just as much of a difference to him as they had to Dairine. 

"When we were in the Sun, you…you spoke to it, and it answered you. But I couldn’t understand anything the Sun was saying. How is that possible? I’m a wizard, I’m supposed to be able to understand any language through the Speech…what was going on?”

Roshaun regarded her coolly for a long moment, then shrugged. “Guarantors have a…unique relationship with stars,” he told her. “I do not know how that form of communication would translate into a Terran idiom. But in any case, you are not missing any great experience by being unable to speak with them. Tremendously egotistical beings—they’re convinced that everything revolves around them.”

There followed a moment of stunned silence as the pun caught up to Dairine.

Nita came down to breakfast a few minutes later to find her sister slumped facedown on the kitchen table, red in the face and still shrieking with helpless laughter. Across from her was a very bemused Wellakhit prince king, finishing off the last of a very thoroughly demolished plate of waffles and regarding her with no small amount of concern. 

"Okay, split up.  This is a war zone, so keep your eyes peeled, and whoever rescues the hottest alien and uses the best pickup line gets to pick the scenario tonight."

"Hi, I’m Captain Jack Harkness, and I think it’s time we blew this joint," he said to the coruscating cloud of yellow and pink.  He threw one arm around what might be a shoulder-equivalent and used the other to detonate a small explosive located strategically beneath an enemy ambush.  It produced a satisfying ball of flame, so he grinned and winked at the whatever-it-was, which turned pinker and vibrated a little.  "And you are?"

Bologna Sandwich

Serves 1

Ingredients:

1 loaf of bread

1 bottle of mustard, any variety

1/2 lb bologna, sliced

Instructions:

Remove bread, mustard, and bologna from refrigerator or cupboards, as applicable, and deposit in temporospatial claudication pocket.

When anticipating an intergalactic transit, or other out-of-range transit from the known coordinates of a silverware drawer, it is highly recommended to also include a knife. (In fact, it is really just generally recommended, as advanced alien civilizations may get a wee bit tetchy if their nice cutlery is continually going missing for no good reason. Or simply confusedly frustrated, in the case of any sevarfrith planets one may be tempted to ‘borrow’ from. Either way, it is not really in keeping with best wizardly practices.)

Arrive at suitable location.

Unwrap bread, bologna, and open bottle of mustard.

Place one slice of bread on flat surface.

Spread mustard. If choosing to disregard the instructions in Step #2, and are lacking in any spreading implement, simply use one’s fingers.

Deposit a slice or slices of bologna onto bread.

Add a second slice of bread on top of bologna.

Repeat Step #5-9 as necessary until you have reached the desired quantity of sandwiches. 

Eat sandwich. 

Brush off crumbs.

Any explanation for such odd feature? (Rectangle carved in rock, from gigapan).
