Parting Ways
It was getting closer.Ā Too close.Ā Soon Mareloen will leave and she will be left to take care of the estate.Ā Gone to Tevinter without her.Ā Just as she wishedā¦Ā Ā
But now things were different.Ā There was no one keeping her here.Ā There was Leon but wellā¦Ā
Her heart still aches thinking of such things.Ā She was silly to think that it would lead anywhere.Ā Even if he made her believe so she should have known better.Ā And yetā¦Ā
It was far too easy to get caught up in the fantasy of it all.Ā She used those words once with Mareloen and he didnāt seem to favor them all too much.Ā Her fantasy and his nightmare if she recalls correctly.Ā Something about how Leon would have succumbed to mortality in half a century and the problems it would have caused.Ā Genevive wonders⦠Sometimes it seems like Mareloen forgets that she too is mortal.Ā That she too will fall ill to the fate of humanity.Ā Half a century⦠To her it seems like a long while away but to Mareloen itās not much more than a blink of an eye sheād suppose.Ā They are so differentā¦Ā One day she will be gone and he living as if she never had existed.Ā Perhaps not at first but after a couple decades or centuries surely her memory must fade from his mind.Ā And thereās a pang in her chest at such thoughts.Ā A sadness to it all.Ā When will it end?Ā All the hurtā¦Ā Genevieve remembers a time all she really felt was joy.Ā A time she was able to find the positive of even the most negative but it seems as if the tide has turned and such things are becoming harder and harder.Ā A certain despairā¦Ā A hopelessness to the future.Ā Ā
But alas⦠Best not dwell on such.Ā She can still put on a smile and pretend everything is alright.Ā For now thatās all she can doā¦
Like now!Ā Grabbing the basket of goodies she puts on a smile and greets Mareloen as he enters the kitchen.Ā She was going to find him but this works too!Ā Ā
āGoodmorning,ā she greets all too cheery, the sound dancing off the walls to an almost eerie tune.Ā āI made you some muffins.Ā Theyāre fresh, straight from the oven.āĀ Recently Genevieve has taken up baking as a way to pass time when she wasnāt studying or training.Ā It was always easier to go to the market and buy her morning treats but now the market has become a place she avoids, everything reminding her of him.Ā āIām hoping they turned out better than the last batch.Ā I couldnāt even get Hawke to swallow one and that man will eat anything.Ā But Iām fairly certain I used the sugar instead of salt this time around.Ā Itās not my fault they look deceptively similar.Ā Quite suspicious if you ask me,ā she jests, holding one out for him.Ā āI used blueberries and lemon this time.Ā They smell quite good, hopefully theyāll match in taste.āĀ But her eyes shine, a sorrow laden deep within.Ā āI know it probably wonāt be as good as the ones Iād bring from the market but hopefully they arenāt too disappointing.āĀ Looking up at him she waits for him to take a bite, a tad nervous for some reason.Ā āI hope to perfect them before your journey.Ā I wish to slip a few in your pack.Ā Something to remember me by.Ā There are only a few days left before you leaveā¦āĀ Ā
Things were hectic to say the least.Ā Tevinter was no small journey after all and they needed to make sure Mareloen left with everything he needed.Ā If only he needed her as wellā¦Ā But alas.Ā It was her choice.Ā Her decision.Ā And she doesnāt have the heart to ask to come with.Ā Not when they spent the past couple of weeks going over her tasks and duties here while he was away.Ā There were too many responsibilities that needed to be taken care of and there was no one else to do them but her.Ā

- TIME JUMP -
āAh!Ā Not so tight Desdemona!āĀ Genevieve gasps as the other woman, well, abomination, tightens the corset.Ā Ā āHow I pity the prey of snakes, nothing could be worse than a fate such as this.āĀ Though the desire does not heed her wishes and pulls harder, further securing the structure in place, resulting in yet another pained yelp.Ā Ā āMaker help me, Desdemona if you make it any tighter I fear Iāll die before the ball.Ā Iām not turning blue yet am I?Ā I can barely breathe.Ā Or move.āĀ Ā
āIf you are I wouldnāt know the makeup is doing a good job covering it up.Ā The mask will help too.Ā And donāt blame me for your faults, if you didnāt slouch so much I wouldnāt have to wind you up so tightly,ā she nonchalantly replies, pulling a little too harshly on the strings.Ā Ā āThere.āĀ Taking a step back the desire admires her handy work.Ā She really went all out on this one.Ā The beading, the lace, the color; it was perfect.Ā āNow your hair.āĀ
ā
Three more torturous hours pass before Desdemona deems her presentable.Ā Three more hours until they head to the carriage and make their way to the event.Ā It was very important things go well tonight.Ā Mareloen made that certain.Ā For what he still has yet to fully explain but she assumes it relates to Tevinter in one way or another.Ā Or the forgotten ones.Ā Or the ancient elves or something along those lines.Ā She honestly canāt keep up anymore.Ā Itās been hard on her since his departure.Ā The woman was so used to having him by her side she forgot what it was like without him.Ā Lonely.Ā That was the best way to describe it.Ā She hasnāt even been able to see Paien or any of her other circle friends.Ā All she had was Snickerdoodle and while great for company the not so little anymore nug doesnāt provide the best conversation.Ā And for the bird, well he looks upon her differently ever since that wholeĀ ācheatingā fiasco.Ā He may be stealthy about it but the change is still noticeable.Ā Ā
And as the carriage comes to a sudden halt and the sound of horns play a proud tune she knows sheās reached her final destination.Ā Her heart beats out of her chest, the nerves settling in all at once.Ā The last time she went to any event close to this stature she was with himā¦Ā Her Mareloen.Ā No.Ā Just Mareloen.Ā He wasnāt hers.Ā But still⦠It didnāt feel right.Ā She didnāt know how she was going to do this without him.Ā Ā
But alas, Genevieve canāt fail him now, and so securely fastening her mask, one that covers little more than her eyes, she makes her exit from the carriage and into chaos she goes.Ā Ā
And just like that, all eyes turn to her. Even the bird like chattering of this supposedly sophisticated crowd dissolves into whispers as Genevieve walks down the grand stairs. Whether curious eyes are a result of the lady showing up alone or simply that Desdemona had damn good job remains to be seen...
Meanwhile Mareloen found himself wondering whether he was wasting ink... and paper ... and time... It has all been going quite well so far, even the experiments proved to finally show some progress with drawing back the red lyrium. A method seemed to have started emerging and most remaining test subjects didnāt seem to be dying off so far. But should he really be recording it or was this merely a way to get his mind of other matters?
His thoughts jumped back to Genevieve. Not that he wasnāt getting some reports on her wellbeing, but demons were not the most reliable source of information when it came to ones happines. Not to mention her first ball was tonight... well... first ball alone in the midst of all those pretentious shems. Not that she wouldnāt manage to uphold appearances, but still... He was worried.
Or maybe he just really missed her.

@daimeshadows
The muffins caught him by surprise.
Not againā¦
But there really wasnāt much he could do, was there?
Mareloen took a bite out of the suspiciously vibrant purple muffin shaped torture device and nodded, jesting and making noises to compliment Genevieve on the exquisite tasteā¦
Why did this feel like more of a lie than anything else?
After juggling the ongoing experiment on her traitor friend, the prisoners ⦠and some other prisoners⦠and Leonās soon-to-be tragic ending, an estate full of demons and their pet ā Birdā getting more and more nosy by the day, weāll⦠lying about a muffin shouldnāt have been this hard.
Mareloen forced a miserable smile and swallowed, trying to ignore the overwhelming sweetness and crack of eggshells on his teeth. What was little suffering next to seeing Genevieve happy again? Or perhaps a little further from the verge of tears?
ā Wonderful⦠thank youā¦ā he finally muttered, trying to slip the rest of the muffin into his pocket, - ā Ah⦠I wanted to talk to you, but⦠Do we have tea? Or something to drink?ā
Anything. Now. Please.
Suddenly he felt a pull on the sleeve - it was Granny Screech holding up the infamous tea. Mareloen hesitantly accepted the cup, but suddenly felt much less thirsty.
ā I⦠wanted to talk to you aboutā¦events. Apparently we have been invited to one, but it will be held after my departureā¦ā
āAh!Ā Itās good no?Ā Iāll make sure to write down the recipe so I can make them any time you desire.Ā Breakfast, lunch, dinner, you name it Iām your girl,ā and for the first time in a while the tips of her ears touch the sky.Ā Sheās glad he likes them.Ā Itās the least she can doā¦
But he wishes to speak to her?Ā About what she wondersā¦Ā
Genevieve accepts the cup from screech and unlike Mareloen takes a sip, quite surprised by the taste, finding it quite pleasant before the drink deceptively warps in her mouth, turning sour, sweet, and tart all at once before an encore of mouldy cheese follows, assaulting her poor taste buds.Ā Alas, the drink leaves her mouth and ends up back into the cup, some of the tea not so gracefully dripping down her chin as her mouth turns a scowl.Ā Well⦠That was something else entirely.Ā But regardless she politely nods at screech assuring it that her palette was just not dignified enough to indulge in itās creation, it was her fault and not the despairs.Ā Ā
āOh?Ā Is that so?āĀ An uneasy feeling arises, Genevieve unable to wash it away.Ā She never went to an event alone before.Ā Was this to be the first time?Ā āI suppose Iāll have to make an appearance all by my lonesome without my handsome husband there by my side.Ā Quite scandalous, but also bold.āĀ She wishes thatās not the case.Ā A room full of shem nobles is the last place the woman would wish to blend into on her own.Ā āI hope they have tiny cakes there.Ā The ones with chocolate icing!Ā Those are my most favored.āĀ While she speaks with ease the conversation is almost forced on her end, Genevieve nervous of what such an event might entail.Ā But itās best she not get herself too worked up about it until she knows just what Mareloen is talking about.Ā Ā
Itās going to be hard without him here.Ā Yet she also finds it hard with him here for some reason.Ā Things⦠they just arenāt the same.Ā Not like they used to be.Ā Not like they were before Leonā¦Ā Ā
Alone.Ā Genevieve feels alone.Ā Sure Mareloen is here but itās different.Ā Itās not like it used to be.Ā And then thereās Hawke, but he has grown somewhat distant too, seeming to favor Mareloen over her.Ā Well, in his eyes she is an ungrateful Orlesian noble who cheated on her loving, doting, protective husband who offers her the world.Ā The best thing she has to comfort right now is screech, and it isn'tā always the most comforting entity to be around.Ā But it tries.Ā It really does.Ā
Screech was extatic. Finally, after all the efforts - true success! Now to share with the bird man and abomination!!!
Letting out some muffled happy sounds the despair grabbed a tray with more tea and hurried of with a noticeable bounce in each step.
ā .... I think we broke that demon,ā Mareloen noted when it was finally out of the room and moved to empty his cup into the nearest flower pot. ā Ah... maybe it will work as a fertilizer? Or a herbicide... Are you alright, lath? Seriously, you shouldnāt drink the stuff.ā
He only wished he could do the same with the muffin - Mareloen could feel the soggy stickiness spread from his pocket. Great. Now he would need to go change and possibly enchant a few pockets in case Genevieve firmly decided to take after her fictional mother.
ā Now, about that event... I do not think mother dearest should come along. I am a little worried about both the illusion and behavior. Being out on the street is one thing, drawing attention to yourself in the middle of a party is another,ā Mareloen began. Heād been thinking about it for the past few hours and couldnāt really come up with a proper solution, ā The desire triplets could pull it off, but if you are not strict enough, your staff will wonder seducing both guests and hosts. If it was about sex, I would not be worried. But some servant may lust to see their masters severed head on a silver platter.... and letās face it, Gem, you are terribly soft with all of them. Now, Hawke is not an option either. Not yet. We will need him a little later.ā
Then there was the abomination...
ā Half of them know Desdemona, the other half know her intimately. So we cannot pass her off as her servant or your guest as she does not fit the status of either... and I do not wish to see either of you you wearing heavier illusions. That being said - try to rely on makeup, jewelry and sleeves as much as you can for this one. Just to be safe. Des will fill you in on the latest gossip as much as she can and instruct you on some of the local etiquette sheās picked up on. She isnāt originally Orlesian, but... well, she has experience beyond her shop. The initial Desdemona... If the two.. the three of you put your minds together, I am quite confident you, lath, will do just fine. I mean, it is not as if the inquisition is attending.ā

ā I am not a good man. My family are good people, so trust me - I know the difference. Iāve tried to be one, but there is blood on my hands andā¦.ā - he caught his tongue before he could say something that could potentially hurt his family if Iveani was to return to her people.
ā ⦠I am weird⦠I constantly run from demons in my nightmares. I canāt stand crowds and I see things that are not there. Things that canāt be true⦠Some places make me feel like I am clearly loosing my mind! ⦠And yes - youāre not the first person to think Iām a mage. But that is the one thing Iām not.ā
There, he said it. She wouldnāt want anything to do with him now⦠not anymore - Daime was sure of it.
It didnāt seem possible to feel his heart ache more than it already did, but just now it completely fell to pieces⦠But it was better this way - to just get it over with now and be done!
ā Iā¦.ā
He didnāt know what else to say.
ā Iāve nothing left to say. You really donāt need me, Iveani⦠thereās already too much on your hands,ā - he added very quietly, - ā Iāve made it here⦠Iāll make it there.ā
āIāve killed people, too, Daime. I want to be with you. Whatever the problem is, Iām sure we can work through it together.ā
Sure, sheād never killed anyone before the Inquisition, but since then, who knew how many lives sheād taken? She liked to think everyone deserved it, but could she ever really know for sure? Itād be hypocritical of her to refuse to be with someone just because of that.
As for the rest⦠they had the Inquisition. If he wanted to find a way to get rid of the nightmares, they could try their best. If not, she also got nightmares. They could live with them together.
āWhy donāt we both go, then? I can make sure you get there in one piece, then step back and let you talk to your sister,ā Iveani suggested.
ā Oh no he wonāt!ā - a voice came from outside the shed.
ā Mother!...ā - a second voice tried to object, but the first woman would have none of it.
ā I havenāt spent a week fighting his fever for him to jump up on that horned thing and break his neck somewhere.ā
Daime took a deep breath. Privacy on the farm was nonexistent. The shabby walls werenāt helping much...
ā I am quite well...ā - he tried to object, Dennets wife Elaina would have none of it.
ā If you cant put a pitchfork to good use - youāre in no condition to leave.ā
"Right. Where am I, who are you and what just happened? Also just... What??" - for Mareloen
The elfās eyes widened as he looked down at the girl who just seemed to come crashing down from nowhere and landing at his feet. He wouldāve been so much more surprised had he not been this hungover.
Alright, so this would be the first and last time heād trusted a Shem on the matter of alcohol...
Silently, he offered her a sandwich - the girl seemed to be even more baffled than he was... also, maybe it would get her to quiet down a bit - heās scull felt like cracking.
"I wouldn't have you do anything. Lives are only worth relatively to whatever a person in question values their life to be. But that doesn't make it a truth."
She stretched out her arms backwards, causally, as if she wasn't talking about life and death.
"Though if you want an objective, monetary value: I know souls go for about 450 gold in Skyrim."
ā .... thatās actually really cheap. Depending on the coin size that is. Hardly a decent set of armor by todayās standards...ā - he paused to think about it. His demons would have a feast in her world if he was to ever allow it, - ā Life used to be much more valuable around these parts. But now that the elves die soon after growing up, it doesnāt seem to matter anymore. Souls... well, they are really only worth a lot to demons and ... the soul in question. I still believe it is a greater cruelty to confine a souls than to keep a slave.ā
The whole situation started him on thinking in a whole new direction - with this girl unexpected possibilities began springing up from the ground like nugs on a spring day.
Only he wasnāt quite sure what he wanted. Not anymore.
Hiatus.
"Right. Where am I, who are you and what just happened? Also just... What??" - for Mareloen

"Divines, I just wanted an agreement, that's all. What are you being so fatalistic for?"
She gave him a weird look, truly not understanding how this person just went from relentlessly teasing to wishing his soul to be taken away from him.
ā I am having a very bad.... several centuries,ā - he replied, - ā Maybe more... Cannot even rely on the calendar anymore.ā
"What's the main cause of your grief, oh lordship of darkness?" She spoke as a servant would to the lord... Except a servant asking for a beating with the sarcasm embedded in saying the title.
Mareloen gave her a deadpanned look and suddenly started laughing. It was obviously something she said... or rather how she phrased it.
ā She would be so pissed if she heard you.ā
"Glad to be the cause of your laughter. Much better than that depressed look from before. I don't know you well enough to be invested in your troubles."
Alessia tried to fight it, but then gave in to her curiosity. "Who's 'she'? A friend? Maybe you should go to her and talk."
ā Darkness... her real name - Banalāras, though it has largely been forgotten. I am afraid she is locked off... which is why you are still standing,ā - he replied, in a slightly less amused tone, - ā Which is also part of my dilemma - I can try to free her... but that would likely cause the human race to suffer immensely - there is a theory it could kill them off. But at the same time the thriving of your kind in these parts can only come at a cost of untimely death for the elven people. And I am not sure if it will hurt the demons... and spirits.... not that any of this makes sense to you... ā
He pondered over something for a bit and then added.
ā Ever heard the expression - darkness and despair?ā
"Only in the sense that I know what the two words mean. And you're right, I don't fully understand the situation. However, I'm not that dumb that I can't recognize you're two godlike beings playing with lives who couldn't care less about the other. Right up until you threaten their fragile state of being."
She gave him a sly smirk. "I don't think it matters wether you try to get rid of humans or elves, either party will revolt. And despair is a powerful motivator to do extraordinary things."
There was this slight sense of speaking out of experience throughout her words.
Mareloen gave the girl a curious look - heād rarely met anyone who could recognize that fact.
ā True... But I happen to come from a time when a life was still worth something. And now they just all die... eventually. What would you have me do?ā
daimeshadowsā:
ā Do you really? Because I would much rather hear you change your mind now, then lather,ā - Daime paused for both to try letting the message get across and gather his thoughts - the second half was easier said than done.
ā You have been honest with me, but I canāt claim to have ever been equally open with you fearing Iād loose you⦠but what can I say, I have always been weird. My entire damn clan knows it and Iāve been on this ice with them for years.ā
He looked at her wondering whether sheād walk out at this point.
āIām not going anywhere unless you want me to go,ā she assured him. She instinctively reached out to touch him, but thought better of it. She didnāt know if he was ready for that yet, or if he was still too angry at her.
āYouāre a good man, Daime. If the rest of the clan doesnāt recognize that, thatās their fault.ā
Still, the constant rejection by everyone in his clan must hurt him. Her heart ached for him. There had to be a way to make them see.
ā I am not a good man. My family are good people, so trust me - I know the difference. Iāve tried to be one, but there is blood on my hands and....ā - he caught his tongue before he could say something that could potentially hurt his family if Iveani was to return to her people.

daimeshadowsā:
She thought about Iveaniās question.
ā Start by saying - andaran atishāan. Itās a greeting in our languageā¦. Our clan doesnāt use it as much as weād like, but try your best to learn as much as you can,ā she suggested as they entered the arravel. Once back in the space, she heated for Iveani to sit on the couch and walked over to what seemed to be a large stone surface. Taking out 2 rocks from a small wooden box she began working on extracting some sparks right onto the surface. For a few moments nothing seemed to be happening, but suddenly the dark stone came aglow with hundreds of small runes.
ā My grandfather, Daimeās great grandfather, was clan keeper. He made this for grandmaeā¦ā - she explained, deciding to entertain the girl to make her feel a bit safer, - ā He would enchant things so everyone could use magic and what is left of his creations works to this very day⦠He was also a great mage that drove our people away from the shemlen. And gave his life so we could all live in peace. So if anyone gives you a hard time because of your origin, you straight up remind them that their great grandparents went through the exact same thing.ā
Picking up a pan and some eggs, she began working on a quick non dairy snack.
ā⦠Just a few more minutes.ā
āAndaran atishāan?ā she repeated, wanting to make sure she pronounced it correctly. The last thing she wanted to do was get thrown out for something so little.
Iveani sat down on the couch, feeling bad that she was making something new. Sheād only meant it to explain why sheād feel sick later, so no one would have to take her to a healer. The last thing she wanted to do was inconvenience anyone more than absolutely necessary. They wouldnāt turn her away over this, would they? Still, she was already cooking.
Iveani nodded, listening to her story, then asked, āIs Daime in trouble because of me?ā
ā Daime is in trouble for not showing due respect to the gods and running off from the scouts on patrol.... mustāve given the poor lads a heart attack. And itās not the first time heās done so.... but heās done right by bringing you straight here, ā - it sounded almost like she was trying to convince herself...
āHeās sensible when it countd and I guess thatās what matters... I just donāt understand why he canāt be more like Bow.... I mean Adri..Adrian is our eldest. Youāll meet him and Naeth when the hunters are back.ā
It wasnāt long before the woman returned with some scrambled eggs served with herbs and spices and some funny looking bread. She seemed to be caught up in thought, but as she places the wooden plate in front of Iveani, she ave finally looked down at the girl.
ā Tell me, daālen, what do you know of dalish tradition... beyond that horrid Shem book.ā
daimeshadowsā:
ā I am quite serious. If you find yourself unable to sleep or need me for whatever reason⦠just one ruleā¦no wait - two. You knock and you tell me if you are upset before passing through the door - I drop my wards in there and if for some reason you are unhappy, I need a moment to get them back up⦠or it feels like waking up from hearing a despair scratching a chalkboard,ā - Mareloen chuckled at the comparison he come up with. Not that it felt exactly like that, but he wanted to give her a relatable image.
āā¦. and one more thingā¦ā - he added suddenly, a little surprised at himself for opening his mouth about⦠but perhaps it was something heād dreamed of himself when he was still very young, - ā I may know who your father is⦠But considering keeping you safe was his responsibility and that was a major fuck up on his behalf⦠I do not know if you would want anything to do with that man.ā
Mareloen paused, considering whether to continue or not - he did.
ā I probably would have strangled him on sight, but they tell me he was looking for you. It is only fair that you decide whether you would like to know him.ā
Iveani nodded to show her understanding, but she was more concerned with the news about her father.
āHow do you know?ā she asked.
She wanted to meet him, at least. He had a lot to answer for. She knew very little about her early life, but she had heard that she needed to be taken away from her mother because she wasnāt being taken care of properly. Where had he been then? She assumed he was a slave, so maybe he just wasnāt able to be there for them for one reason or another, but she wanted to know why.
ā The boy... the young lord you helped take of for a bit. Long story short - sent him the slaves from... where you came from,ā - he wouldnāt know how else to put it without making her feel bad. In fact this was a slippery subject and Mareloen wasnāt quite sure how to go about it...- ā A man came looking, asking about and offering money.... They boy was raised by some of my people... the slaves. Letās just say he sees value in lives. Aaaanyway.... Apparently he was looking for his daughter - Iveani. Tracing down documents... There are some demons currently checking up on the mater, but if you are not interested, I will just have them stop.ā
