Multiculturalism is usually spoken about in abstract terms by white middle class commentators, and debated in headlines as a philosophical question. It’s not as often explored as a reality, on a human level, with all its complexities, by the people who that term concerns the most. For us it’s just life, it’s not a label or political approach to be debated. Debating multiculturalism is like debating whether or not people like me should exist.

Life flies by, and it’s easy to get lost in the blur. In adolescence, it’s ‘How do I fit in?’ In your 20s, it’s ‘What do I want to do?’ In your 30s, 'Is this what I’m meant to do?’ I think the trick is living the questions. Not worrying so much about what’s ahead but rather sitting in the grey area - being OK with where you are.

The further you get away from yourself, the more challenging it is. Not to be in your comfort zone is great fun.

I was expecting to meet Winona, icon of the ‘90s, but on my first day, she came up in this orangey wig worn by her more mature character… It took me a moment. I’d already played a messed-up guy in a dark, psychological role and a council estate junkie, but this has been the most I’ve connected to any material. I found a lot of similarities between me and the character.

When you have expectations, you are setting yourself up for disappointment.

I think any time anybody sees the bad guy show emotion and you’re not hitting the audience over the head, there’s always a tinge of empathy for that individual.

I need to fully understand why, the thought-process behind the character and I have to believe it. That comes from a lot of preparation.

we don’t ask the actor playing james bond what his sexual preference is. so i don’t know what it is, really, with trying to out actors who portray gay characters on television. but it is some sort of fascination in society.
