Staten Island AHL Team Changes Name After Widespread Protest, Rumors of New Owner

As the Grant Ward Human Protection Act gains traction and the arrest of supers have been in the news more often than not, it was only a matter of time before the  sports world was hit with an aftershock. The Staten Island Avengers, an AHL affiliate of the New York Rangers, has announced that, starting immmediately, they will be officially changing their name to the Staten Island Underdogs. A spokesperson revealed the name of their new mascot, Sonar, a throwback to their Hartford days, and promised he will be revealed at an upcoming game.
The Staten Island Underdogs, who moved from Hartford (formerly Wolf Pack) in 2012, are owned by Tony Stark, former CEO of Stark Industries and current Avenger in trouble with the law. "In Staten Island, weâre used to being the âforgotten boroughâ, but we want to remind the world that normal people, athletes and fans alike, can be victorious. And we deserve to know that we can be protected and victorious.âÂ
Almost always known for staying politically neutral, this is a rare statement from a professional sports team, seemingly in support of the Grant Ward Human Protection Act. Charles Lester, one of the nearly 600,000 people who signed the petition to change the Staten Island teamâs name, voiced his support for this. âItâs time we stop associating our boys with the Avengers, who seem to cause more trouble than they fix.â
On the other hand, a small, loyal group of fans seem to be in protest of this name change. A group of fans sitting in section 201 of Coulson Memorial Rink at last nightâs game against the Hershey Bears wore Staten Island Avengers merchandise and even tried to start a âLetâs Go âVengersâ cheer during the Underdogsâ 3-2 overtime loss to the Bears.Â
In addition to the new name, another rumor is swirling around the Staten Island team. With the recent run-ins between Iron Man and the law, there have been rumors of Tony Starkâs assets being frozen and there are a rumored multiple people lining up to buy out the team in Mr. Starkâs stead. These rumors havenât been officially confirmed or denied by the Underdogs, the Rangers organization, or Mr. Stark himself.
The Staten Underdogs travel to Lehigh to battle the Phantoms during an afternoon game at 3pm on Sunday.
