Baizhu x reader | Bad liar
fluff | 0.7k | gn!reader
The dinner was a pleasant affair. The food was good, the weather mild and warm, simply perfection. Yet there’s been a palpable tension in the air, stemming from you and rubbing off on Baizhu who now watches you with cautious concern.
“I met the neighbor’s kids,” you finally break the silence, “And they told me they saw doctor Baizhu fighting bad guys yesterday.”
He squirms in his seat, offering a bashful smile that gets him only a raise of your eyebrow.
“I swore them to secrecy too,” he sighs as puts down his chopsticks. At least he finally knows what’s going on. “I promise I was most careful.”
“I’m not calling you reckless, I’m calling you a liar,” you point out. He winces a little.
“I didn’t get hurt,” he tries again, “And they couldn’t protect themselves.”
“I’m not calling you weak either,” your voice softens, “I’m just saying you lied to me, Baizhu.”
His face falls further. Leaving his seat, he kneels in front of you, his hands taking yours and bringing them to his lips.
“I just didn’t want you to worry,” he confesses. Soft kisses are pressed to all of your knuckles.
“You always say that,” it’s your turn to sigh now, “And it only makes me worry more. That’s why I asked you not to lie to me anymore.”
“I know,” he nods, his forehead leaning against your knees. You let go of his hands to stroke his hair. “I’m sorry.”
You hum, a small noncommittal sound. It’s not like you don’t understand his reasoning, you’re just getting tired of the repeating pattern. This time it at least seems that he truly didn’t get hurt, but it doesn’t erase all the previous times when he poisoned himself and you only found out when you found him unconscious, too weak to even take the antidote ready in his hand. That time, he also didn’t want to worry you. And then the next time, and the next…
“It just came out,” he whispers, “I didn’t mean to purposely lie to you.”
“It’s a bad habit to have,” you acknowledge.
“It won’t happen again,” he says, looking up into your eyes. His chin now rests on your knees, his arms wrap around your legs.
Baizhu isn’t one to say things like that lightly. What can you do but smile at him fondly and nod, accepting his promise. And yet he doesn’t move. You’re happy enough to keep playing with his hair, sure, but the ground must be cold and hard on his knees. You tilt your head to the side in a silent question.
“Aren’t you proud of me? At least a little bit?” he turns his head too, his cheek squishing against your thigh.
“I am,” you chuckle, “You’re an incredible fighter but I wish you didn’t push your luck.”
He smiles up at you too, slowly raising himself and dusting off his pants.
“You’re much better at saving lives without the use of violence anyway,” you remind him.
It doesn’t seem like he’s about to argue with that - can’t argue with that. So instead, he deposits himself into your lap. You make a surprised noise but your hands fly to steady his waist without hesitation.
“I did so well yesterday,” he murmurs, his arms around your shoulders, “As you can see I’m alright. Not a scratch on me.”
His lips press against your hairline, then your nose. Looking down on you, the setting sun paints him a halo of a saint.
“Is this you asking for forgiveness or trying to make me less upset?” you tease.
“No use treating the symptoms if the underlying cause remains untended to,” he chuckles, “I’m simply using the most effective way to show you that I really am sorry.”
“Not lying to me in the first place, since we already talked about this, would be effective,” you point out, “Now you’re just trying to distract me and fishing for compliments.”
“Compliments that you so willingly give me,” he smirks. You sigh. It’s all pointless anyway.
Baizhu finally settles, apparently with zero intention of moving for the time being. Not that you mind anyway, the view is perfect. It’s his fingers now playing with your hair, staring at you lovingly as if that soft gaze could take away all your lingering anger and disappointment. And maybe it can, you think, when he dips his head down to kiss you.

A quick character study on Pantalone and his relationship with his mother.
⚠️Spoiler warning for 7.0 artefact descriptions
1,115 words - angst - hurt / no comfort - childhood trauma
Pantalone stands in his bathroom. The day had been long, his customers at the bank soul sucking, the shower hot enough to leave his skin red and sensitive.
Covered only in a towel wrapped around his waist, he stares at the large, ornate mirror above his sink.
All too silently he observes what should be his reflection, and yet all he can see, through those tired purple eyes, is her.
The same face that would angrily scream at him, call him an unruly freak, a disobedient brat. How he dishonored the name she give him.
Her long black hair rested against her temple the same way it does over his.
"You ruined my body Feofan." She had said once, laying drunk on her bed after she had come home late that night. She had worked double her usual shift just to afford enough food for them to not starve by the end of the month.
"I was beautiful before I had you."
He hadn't responded. He was only six, what was he supposed to say? Back then the words hadn't stung nearly as much as her cold hands had on his skin.
Only now do they wear their intended weight on his soul.
It's the same face that had averted his eyes when she handed him over to the debt collectors. Even then he could tell she didn't feel bad about it, she felt no regret nor guilt. She simply hadn't cared about what he felt as they grabbed his small hands and dragged him away from home.
He hadn't looked back either.
The same face that had stared at him in abject horror just last week. When he stood tall before the wreck he once called home, draped in his white harbinger coat.
"No, I don't believe you." She had said, shaking her head in disbelief. Perhaps knowing, but simply unwilling to acknowledge the truth of what her poor little boy had become. Unwilling to accept her part in the chain of events that led Feofan Sergeyevich Veksel to turn into the ruthless monster that is the Regrator.
"You aren't my son." He could see it in her eyes. The anguish that was long overdue, the fear, the confusion. The only thing uncharacteristically missing was her anger. The emotion, that had defined the image he had formed of her in his scattered childhood memories was simply gone, as if it was a curse she had been freed of. Something she had passed down to him much like her appearance.
That unwavering hatred was his to bear now. It would show itself only in quiet, isolated rooms, before incompetent subordinates and indebted clients of the northland bank.
It would burst out of him in waves, like a starving animal lunging at unsuspecting prey, and destroy everything in its path, leaving nothing behind but a crying terrified person and a thoroughly wrecked room beyond repair.
Damaged furniture, shattered mugs, more than a few broken bones. It was never pleasant and it always lasted longer than he pleaded it would.
He likes to think he stops being himself in those moments, that it isn't him who is to blame for the results of his sudden violent outbursts, but something else entirely. A ghost of times passed, an afterimage of a violent mother, or a group of strict older strangers whose lavish yet empty houses he lived in, who made him call them "father".
But that past is only to blame for itself. Pantalones actions are his own, cared out by his hands, the venom voiced from his tongue. He has only the mirror to accuse.
"Lord regrator?" The muffled voice of one of his subordinates takes him out of his downward spiral. He lets out a tired groan.
"I am not to be disturbed." He calls out loud and clear. This is the third time tonight he had had to remind her of his orders. This is usually the point where she looses her job and ends up under the tight straps of Dottores operating table.
"I know, I am terribly sorry, it's just,… the lord Dottore demands to see you. He's rather insistent." The fatuus stutters out.
Of course. What else would he expect. He always picks the best of times.
Pantalone slides his feet into his slippers, he pulls his soft black bathrobe over his shoulders and pulls the fabric belt tight around his hips, making himself just presentable enough to not expose his manhood. Finally he opens his bathroom door and wanders sluggishly into his living room.
"Let him in." He tells the subordinate. His hair still shining wet, but at least not dripping water over his polished floor, he slumps down onto his couch, forcing himself to cross his legs before his own exhausted mind reminds him that there isn't exactly any part of him Dottore hasn't seen.
"About time," the doctor mutters mutters as he pushes his way into the regrators home.
The moment their eyes meet, his expression shifts from angry annoyance to a calm serenity.
"Caught you at a bad time huh?" He jokes, noting the lack of usual clothing as he settles down next to Pantalone.
"Now you pretend to care." The ninth laughs, picking the mask up off his nose.
"I must look a mess."
The doctors red glowing eyes sparkle at him like rare gemstones through pale blue eyelashes.
"You smell nice." He notes analytically as always. All his compliments tend to boarder on scientific acknowledgement.
"What's prompted you to interrupt my shower?" The Regrator inquires.
"I need-" he starts.
"Mora." Pantalone finishes, rubbing his eyes. Preparing himself for another absurd number to be brought before him.
"-for a large scare experiment, yes. Though not much. Only travel expenses and a bit of hush money."
"Oh?"
"Im developing a chemical. I require a testing ground and I need guinea pigs. Lots of em." The doctor explains.
Pantalone drops his head back against the cushions. His eyes stare blankly at the ceiling for a second.
"Would a small town suffice?" He asks.
"Just about."
"I know a place." He whispers.
He thinks for a second. About his home, about every single person who had raised him. All the houses, foundations so weak they could collapse under their own weight by a strong breeze. Little smoking chimneys and poor families of friendly faces just trying to get by.
"Do whatever you want with it, just… burn it down when your done. All of it." He speaks, his face absent of care, of sympathy or any emotion at all for that matter. He feels nothing at all, only the cold air on his scalp.
Look I am one of the first persons to complain when a character in Genshin Impact have their writting restricted and negatively affected because the devs wanted to tease a ship with another character, that's one of my least favourite recurring writting choices in the game, a lot of my favourite characters had been a victim of this and I had even grown to dislike most of these ships after I notice.
That being said, I don't understand why people are claiming that this is happening with Pantalone and his relationship with Dottore, cause I don't see it and while I think it's a valid worry I also think y'all are crazy or iliterate to claim its happening now lmao.
Like I am not going to pretend that they aren't baiting us with ship content, because they are, these two are absolutely obsessed with each other, dare even to say it is already canon and pretty explicit that these two do love each other, the only thing its that it may be vage enough for people to intrepet as either romantic or platonic.
However I think people exagerate when they speak about how "they're reduced to a ship" because even with all the bait I don't think we can make that judgement just yet, and most of its criticism seems pretty misguided:
First there are the criticism about how almost every appearance or mention about him "had Dottore involved somehow" wich... no shit? It made sense it does??
He is a character that is just starting to appear in the main story after years of being just a figure teased in texts, dialogues and merchandising, we don't have so much direct things about him and with the few we have, they're made in a context that it makes sense to include the guy thats his only real friend in the world and who he depends on to keep being alive.
His only direct participation in the game to this point was a quest where he didn't have time to do much, I believe there was like a few scenes where he appears to do something on screen, maybe like 6. And also, the whole point was that he was there to assist Dottore, like why would he be seen doing something unrelated to him if he is the whole reason he was there lmao?? (Also, even with that I would say they still managed to give him a nice personal characterization without it being centered on Dottore? I'm thinking about his conversation with the Traveler where he was claiming to "admire" them, but still sounding so condescending as if he didn't fully repect them, almost as if he was already treating them as potential tools of his use, I found that to show off how much of an interesting character he is).
And then, what I find funny is now people saying that about the leaked artifact descriptions, cause first these artifacts are about the Harbingers and their relationship with each other, guess what Dottore is, and who he has a close relationship with. Second, I'd like you to see write a summary of Pantalone's life without including the man that is the whole reason he is even alive after so many years, like I don't think thats possible lol.
But talking seriously, I believe the narrative that he is "being reduced to his relationship with Dottore" is simply too forced, It's too soon to decide that, and of course the character that would be centered would be the antagonist that had been tormeting us in the game, and even it took him longer to have some development in his lore and conflicts, I think y'all might be unreasonably impatient here.
But there is something else that makes me disagree with the criticism on their relationship, and its the fact that, yeah this specific way of writting character's relationship had been used so much, but this is like the one time where they pull this right? As in, the one time where this exclusive closeness between two characters ***adds*** to the character instead of ***taking*** from them.
Because the problem with this writting trope its that it forces a character stay stuck in a position where they're restraint from developing or learning new things about them, they also have relationships with other characters that we won't see them interact with again because every time they're on screen the narrative forces the situation to only give ship bait to that one character, when these characters gets introduced with interesting conflicts that never gets adressed again cause this gets ignored to keep this character appear to only have a quirky gimmick with the character they're shipped with, and so much potential about their character as an individual gets never explored because in the little participation they do get it gets used to not much more than "but look how cute they look with this other character in particular!"
And with Dottore and Pantalone it may seem like they're doing something similar, but once you read deeper into them you'll notice that they're so fundamentally different from the other cases that it feels silly to compare them.
First of all, the whole point of their relationship its that, yes, they are so close and stuck to each other because they don't have anyone else. Like in the other cases the characters do have other important connections that just gets ignored for the sake of the one they had with that one character, but you can't apply the same criticism to these two who lives in an entirely diferent context from most normal people.
Their whole thing its that both of them just feel rejected and abandoned by this world, everyone either loathes or fear them, if not both, and even their colleagues don't really speak to them if it isn't for work. The only place where they found the comfort of a community is in each other, the only person that doesn't make them feel rejected, thats why they're so fond of each other and keeps appearing side to side as if they come in a duo everywhere.
And it isn't just that they like each other to be together so much, but they quite literally depend on each other to exist in the most literal sense. Like they quite have a symbiotic relationship where they support each other's livehood, Pantalone is the direct funder of Dottore's life work that nobody else would have considered funding, and Dottore is quite literally Pantalone's main caretaker and personal Doctor who managed to keep his heart pumping for hundreds of years. If it wasn't because of each other, both of them wouldn't reached as far as they did, in fact I think at least Feofan would be dead in a ditch long ago by this point.
And the reason I say that this adds instead of taking from Pantalone's character (both of them but I'm discussing him in particular here), its because instead of restraining his characterization all I see it's that it explores interesting traits in him when met with the only person in the world that treated him as an equal.
He had been mistreated and used by the world, so of course he would be enternally loyal to the one man that not only didn't turn his back on him, but also to give him the opportunity to work by his side to rise in an unfair system that set him up to stay at the bottom. And even with a genuine friendship, they both developed that relationship of mutual benefit, and as the important person he is he even keeps his profesionality in all that.
It shows what kind of person he is, and you do feel that they're actually taking advantage of it to explore his person, instead of restricting it all to "Oh look this character's short appearance happened only to have them repeat the same quirky dynamics with this other character in particular for the 27368126th time aren't they so cute!?!"
Of course that we can't say much about this dynamic because we just met them and we still need to see how they will develope it now that they're finally in the game. And of course that there is still the possibility that they could fuck up their writting and "reduce them to the ship" damaging their characterizations, because like I said they had already done that many times. And I sure hope they won't, because I'm really invested in their relationship and would be bummed if they ruined all their potential for lame ship content (because at very least they desrve GOOD and well developed ship content!), but again I think people are freaking out about this too soon, at this point I'm still even positive they will lead this way better because the writting for the development of character's relationships had been done more tastefully in later nations (with some exceptions of course).
I'll buy that they're "reducing him to ship" only when I see that potential relationships with other people gets restrained to favour this one, or his personality gets reduced to an unfunny gimmick with the other dude, or his character gets introduced with lots of interesting conflicts that never gets adressed but we do get 1000 repetitive interactions between these two, or if there is always an excuse to somehow have them together everywhere even if it would make sense they didn't, or if he gets "his quests" that are actually about them both, or if- God you can see my hatred for this trope, let's pray they don't apply this to them... or that they don't do it ever agin! that would make me happy.
