Hi! I’ve been enjoying your art for years, especially the master studies in Sonic style ones. They are fantastic. If you don’t mind, would you be willing to share your thought process that goes into taking a master work and creating a Sonic stylized version of it? I’d LOVE to do the same thing with my favourite characters but I’m not sure how to start…!
🌼🌹Thank you for your sweet words! 🌹🌼
My goal with the master studies is, first and foremost, to examine what I like about a painting and try to learn what techniques the artist used and choices they made to make their painting.
While I explore different things in different master studies, I usually first look around the internet for artists that I like and when I find an artist that resonates with me, I look through their work.
Principally, each work can become a stylized version of Sonic – but some works might prove harder to transform. So, it’s good to first plan out how things would work regarding composition, colour, proportions, etc. before starting, because you might have to shift some things around for the stylized version to work as the original. During the actual drawing process, I constantly look at the original painting and try to understand the decisions. For Sally’s master study, for example, I realized how Sargent chose to make some lines hard, while keeping others very soft. These decisions I then tried to emulate in the work.
So, to put it somewhat as a process, I choose a work I like and want to learn from, make a (loose) plan to see how it would work and then start drawing, while trying to understand decisions made in the original work.
I hope it helps! If it’s unclear or if you have other questions, feel free to message me! Good luck with your drawings!
Sincerely, Daelynz 🌻
