it is unsavory to imply that a black woman would be overseeing/taking care of white men, this falls into the mammy-ification of her.

you may think that it isn’t that serious, but it truly is. there have been years of cinema and literature that paints black people in a certain way that is still being undone to this day. a mammy is often a big boned black woman who is a “nanny” who takes care of a white family (and their kids) and lives with them. this is a racist caricature stemming from the jim crow era.

for the longest time black women were only seen as mammy’s, and in Hollywood the first black woman to win an oscar, Hattie McDaniel, was for the role of a mammy in Gone with the Wind. at the end of the film they told her she was free to go wherever and they had her beg to stay and take care of the white children so that they wouldn’t be apart. this film came out in 1940.

this is a role and societal stereotype that is still simmering beneath the surface of interactions and prejudice. i know laila made a joke abt living with willmack, and people would love to see their favs interact, but i need you all to choose your diction with care. realize the implications of calling a black woman a handler in relation to white man, and even out of the racial standpoint why implicate a woman having to keep the reigns in check on men?

there is a lot wrong with the statements made in regards to laila and people should know. and i am not making this “too deep” because i know firsthand the experience of being black in a white favored society.

Actually no i did skim a bit more and (again im not too entirely sure on the exact wording bc i didnt like or save so theres no way for me to go back and check) and saw something like “i am not a person of color but i am one of the most supportive” or “least racist” or whatever 😭😭

also notice how white people are quick to console each other and go “yeah, you’re so right.” “idk why anyone would think the worst of you” “you did nothing wrong” but there isn’t a black person’s opinion in sight

laila edwards is more than another character to add to your willmack universe. this isn’t saying thats she can’t be in fics, this is saying you shouldn’t have looked at her draft and immediately have gone “omg! now she can be friends with willmack and willmack will be her buddies and she can be in willmacks life. and she probably would wanna live with willmack” like, this isn’t about them. this is about her.

it is in fact ignorant to deteriorate her to that, and to take some valid points and go “i hope no one believe this terrible thing about me wanting to use a black woman as a piece in my shipverse!”

also, this doesn’t have to be rpf related. laila simply cannot just exist as she is? how odd. and the amount of likes i’ve seen on posts saying “it isn’t racist for me to use her like this! it isn’t ignorant to whittle her down to willmack’s friend! it isn’t strange to say she’d wanna be stuck to them like glue!” is very weird.

this is one of those moments where i remember how majority white nhlblr and nhl fandom is. you don’t even realize the error of your ways, and when someone brings it up to you you’re immediately defensive instead of accepting the information and working to be better

the issue here is the fact that people immediately saw laila’s draft and thought of how to apply that to their favorite white boys instead of highlighting her accomplishments and who she is as a person: first black woman in team usa, first black woman to win gold for team usa, highest drafted black woman in the pwhl. she has done so much, so pardon me for getting mad when someone wants characterize her as “willmacks friend who gets annoyed by their gay antics”
