Contrary to popular belief the biggest beginner's roadblock to art isn't even technical skill it's frustration tolerance, especially in the age of social media. It hurts and the frustration is endless but you must build the frustration tolerance equivalent to a roach's capacity to survive a nuclear explosion. That's how you build on the technical skill. Throw that "won't even start because I'm afraid it won't be perfect" shit out the window. Just do it. Just start. Good luck.
Genuinely finding joy in the process of a skill is sometimes the only way to advance in the skill at all. Practice can be so boring and if you don't find joy in the practice itself you're more likely to quit.
If you are trying to improve your art and you're new and feeling that frustraton that your skills are not where you envision them to be, you need to try and find joy in the practice. Baby steps can be so helpful and even if it feels silly it's rewarding. Struggling with the face and its driving you mad? Ignore the other anatomy and work specifically on practicing faces! The rest you can build up to later. Got the face down? Lets try poses now! Don't care if the body anatomy sucks, get the poses down cause its whats frustrating you, and build from there etc. etc. etc.
Also remind yourself why you want to do this in the first place. Is it intolerable not being able to put the image you imagine to paper? Because it might look like garbage to you now but you MADE it. You put that idea to paper and was it fun to do it even if you struggled?
Finding the joy in the process more than the result, allows the skill will follow you, until one day you realize that what you envisioned is what's finally in front of you made by your own hands and goddamn is that SO satisfying.
Yes, this is Luo Yi Rong, who absolutely is the same sculptor from that astonishingly inept self-own by an idiot.
His wife left him?? XD
I just ate one

a really funny thing about working with seeds in a day to day capacity is that you really need the seeds to stay in one place at any given moment, and the seeds disagree. so itβs just like, seeds end up on the floor. seeds end up on the desk. seeds appear in the crack between the glass plate of the microscope stage and its surrounding metal casing. seeds are around the dumpster outside. sweeping up seeds, patching up bags of seeds, picking seeds off your clothes and from between keyboard keys, very carefully transferring seeds into containers less likely to cause catastrophe should the seeds breach containment, like itβs just an uphill battle built into the work. almost as if the seeds are hyperevolved to disperse themselves or something

never letting him go again
A big issue with online queer discourse is you never know what queer level your opponent is. You could be arguing about he/him lesbians with someone who thinks men canβt be bisexual
top 3 hobbies for young adults:
1. borrowing misery from future
2. carrying grief of the past
3. agonizing over the present
STORYTIME. Last February, I sold a mug on Etsy. Common occurrence. Great. After it arrived at its new home, I got an email from the woman who bought it. She thanked me for the beautiful piece and remarked that the handle was perfectβshe struggles with arthritis and finds many mugs difficult to hold. I was so touched!
Fast forward to six weeks agoβI receive an email from her husband, explaining he broke the mug (lol) and asking if Iβd be willing to take on a commission to replace it. He reiterates how she has arthritis but also shares she used to make pottery, herself, but can only really paint, now. I say of course! Come to find out, he wants a WHOLE SET of mugs to replace the broken one. Even better! I end up making the whole set twice (I wasnβt satisfied with the first attempt), but finally get them packed up and sent off across the country.
I just received the kindest message from the husband, saying βIt is not often in today's world that someone does 100% of what they have promised,β thanking me profusely, and sharing that his wife is already happily using the new mugs.
Anyway, I guess the point is that making art is hard. And commissions always cause me a lot of undue stress, but things like this remind me why I love creating and connecting with people. π
completely enamoured with this beast

You know what? I'm posting it again as it's own post to brag.
Look at her!!
Something that I get chills about is the fact that the oldest story told made by the oldest civilization opens with "In those days, in those distant days, in those ancient nights."
This confirms that there is a civilization older than the Sumerians that we have yet to find
Some people get existential dread from this
Me? I think it's fucking awesome it shows just how much of this world we have yet to discover and that is just fascinating
@makaeru peer review cos this made me check when the Sumerians happened and I forget how recent history is for every other continent. 7000 - 8000 years ago just isn't that long when you're in Australia, and the amount of detailed history we have access to here is wonderful and should be recognised more internationally
Source (non Aboriginal)
And a quote I picked out from a longer interview with an Aboriginal local elder about the area where he touched on the history
Source (the rest of the interview is really interesting and all transcribed, have a look if you're curious)
This is part of my Ancient Civilizations class that I teach, which does a whole week about Australia and the Torres Strait Islands because I was sick of never seeing them represented in USAmerican history contexts. With the help of @micewithknives and @acearchaeologist I've learned so many incredible things about Australia's past and it's been incredibly rewarding to share them with students.
My favorite fact about Aboriginal oral history is the fact that we pretty recently discovered that the Aboriginal myth of the 7 Sisters, an origin story for the Pleiades star cluster, accurately reflects a point TEN THOUSAND YEARS AGO when two stars in the constellation got close enough together to no longer be distinguishable by the naked eye.
The story? 6 sisters running from something that took their 7th sister.
as a gilgar gunditj woman, i was not expecting to see my culture on my dash.
