the "rip ___ you would have loved ___" meme is inherently more fun with ancient characters. rip clytemnestra you would have loved morse code. rip theseus you would have loved the airtag. rip callisto you would have loved wearing shorts.

everyone makes the joke posts about how if they fumbled a bbw to a soundcloud rapper they would also start eating their own organs but i don't think pearl actually fumbled rose under any definition. pearl inspired some of the most positive changes in rose's life and rose spent thousands of years loving being with her while also fully convinced that she was undeserving of her. you have to place the whole thing with rose dating greg in context of the gem timescale. it's canon text that rose was occasionally dating earth men during the course of their time on earth, not as some sort of monogamous break-up situation where she would leave pearl each time, but where her gem relationship with pearl was one long ongoing thing, and humans were the cute little aliens she sort of objectified and treated as a novelty to occasionally date before she got bored of them/they died/whatever. rose presumably did not in any meaningful way drop pearl for greg, she just deprioritized spending time with her--which pearl was fine with at first, because she was fine with being deprioritized for novelties that might only last a few years while she'll last for thousands. pearl became upset and envious after she realized that rose actually cared about this one in a way more comparable to how she cares about pearl. but this didn't happen because she fumbled rose by any reasonable stretch of the term. this happened because even after reinventing herself once thanks to pearl's idea, rose still believed that she hadn't really changed, and hated herself, and saw herself as unworthy and undeserving of the people around her, and was very suicidal. she was so enamored with greg and with humans because she saw them of being capable of changing & growing in a way that she believed she was fundamentally incapable of. and so she decided to kill herself through the route that involved what she perceived as reinvention into someone beautifully capable of that growth. pearl just simply could not have done anything about rose still privately having those hang-ups or about the fact that they're both gems. I Do Not Believe It Was Pearl's Fumble When Her Wife Killed Herself
As my friend Julian puts it, only half winkingly: "God blessed me by making me transsexual for the same reason God made wheat but not bread and fruit but not wine, so that humanity might share in the act of creation."
This has been driving me insane because this quote is so incredibly Jewish but every time I saw it was completely divorced from Judaism in the version applying it to 'transsexual'.
The original concept that humans complete the act of creation by making bread from wheat is from the Talmud! And the specific "wheat but not bread, grapes but not wine" phrasing is from Jewish theologian Abraham Heschel but it is missing "clay but not bricks".
And among trans Jews the sentiment was already popular before I ever started seeing this specific phrasing so I knew, knew, knew a Jew and likely a trans Jew was involved.
As it happens, Ortberg's friend Julian is Jewish and they have strongly negative feelings about the way the quote has been removed from the context of their life as someone trans and Jewish. They used to have a thread up on xwitter about it but have since made their account private and only have a very terse FAQ online from which you can glean the treatment they likely received when being more open about their Jewishness, relationship to transness, and the interaction of both.
the world's smallest carnivore is called the "least weasel" 😭😭 i'm dying but like if it's the smallest carnivore then it sure is the least amount of weasel you can have 😭😭😭

Let's see if I can finish this spin before tour de fleece. I have roughly 19 ounces/540 grams of this luscious Shetland/tussah top in the colorway called Seaswirl. I bought it from two different sellers, 200 grams from Jakira Farms and 12 ounces from Divine Dye Works, and they are slightly different colors.
So my plan is for a three ply, with one bluer than the other two. I will probably end up with extra of the bluer ply, so I will make an accent yarn made from left over singles and another top (either some blue green merino/silk, Hipstrings Shetland/silk blend or blend something of my own).
I've finished the first 100 grams, though lost bobbin chicken. I should admit that the max I can fit on a bobbin is 3 ounces.

Take a look at these African peach moths (Egybolis vaillantina). The shades of blue on their wings are so striking against the bright hues and dark edgings. Living art, right?
a new reality tv show called So you think you can write Doctor Who
twelve episodes, twelve contestants - a mix of annoying middle aged sci fi authors, fan fic authors and random people off the street
a variety of against the clock writing tasks, big finish scripts, ability to interact with actors without shouting at them and challenges where you have no budget or doctor for an episode
judged by solely by christopher eccleston
this is how you find the new doctor who showrunner
Okay, real talk now. People love to tag male characters in posts about women, but this post is gonna take this seriously. Is there actually a canonically male character you believe is a trans woman? Or at least has made into a trans woman for a fanart or a fanfic? Excluding the ones canonically implied.
Sound off in the tags! Link to the fanart or fic if available. Do it. Give me the girls. Make more women.
I have a chart for this ("estrogen would fix him" is the stuff that qualifies here. I could write a short blurb about all of these but I'm too tired to do that right now so y'all get the chart).
(Description below the readmore rather than in alt text since it's long.)
A venn diagram with three circles, labeled "estrogen would fix him," "estrogen would make him worse," and "estrogen could not save him (but it'd be really funny)."
In the "estrogen would fix him" section are:
Kirito from Sword Art Online.
Mister Priest from Make the Exorcist Fall in Love.
Cloud from Final Fantasy 7.
Don Quixote.
In the overlap between "estrogen would fix him" and "estrogen would make him worse" are:
Enciodes Silverash from Arknights.
Denji from Chainsaw Man
In the "estrogen would make him worse" section are:
Light Yagami from Death Note.
Izuku Midoriya from My Hero Academia.
In the overlap between "estrogen would fix him" and "estrogen could not save him" are:
Seto Kaiba from Yu-Gi-Oh.
Sanji from One Piece.
In the "estrogen could not save him" section are:
Shinji from Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Char Aznable from Gundam.
Quatro Bajeena from Gundam.
In the overlap between "estrogen would make him worse" and "estrogen could not save him" are:
Zenos from Final Fantasy 14.
Laios Touden from Dungeon Meshi.
Lazurite Roy from Arknights.
And finally, in the dead center of the venn diagram, are Shirou Emiya from Fate/Stay Night and Kim Dokja from Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint.
In a far corner of the image, away from the venn diagram, is Saber from Fate/Stay Night, labeled with her name and overlaid on a circular trans flag.

The rule could have heavy impacts towards trans people across society.
Last week, the Trump administration quietly released a sweeping new federal rule that would use funding threats to force institutions across the country to reject transgender people. The 400-page proposed regulation would codify the administration's anti-trans executive orders into binding federal policy, imposing a blanket prohibition on federal funds going toward "gender ideology"
The proposed rule, formally titled "Regulation for Federal Financial Assistance," rewrites the government-wide framework governing all federal grants across every agency. Among its most consequential provisions, it requires that before a federal grant recipient can receive money, the award must pass a "pre-issuance review" conducted by a political appointee—not a career expert or peer reviewer—to ensure it is "consistent with applicable law, Federal agency priorities, and the national interest." The regulation explicitly instructs these appointees to screen for "denial by the recipient of the sex binary in humans or the notion that sex is a chosen or mutable characteristic." [...] An institution that acknowledges transgender people exist—through its policies, its training, its healthcare, its bathroom access, its HR procedures, its name-change processes—could be deemed to "deny the sex binary" or to “support the notion that sex is mutable” and have its federal funding blocked.
Importantly, the gender ideology prohibition has no age limitation—hospitals could be targeted not just for providing care to minors but for providing gender-affirming care to adults, because prescribing hormone therapy to a transgender patient of any age could be deemed promoting the belief that "sex is a chosen or mutable characteristic."
This is all very bad and horrible, but I want to be clear that it’s worse and more sweeping than just eliminating trans research.
This torches everything. And I do mean everything.
A very abbreviated list of its ramifications include (but are not limited to):
ending funding for ALL DEI related initiatives
allowing the government to terminate grants at any point for any reason
preventing researchers from publishing, going to conferences, and being part of academic societies
requiring that topics must support the president’s agenda.
What this means, and if anything I’m under selling it, is the death of science and research in America. It allows the government to restrict any topic they please at a whims notice, putting officials who have no background in the topic in charge of deciding funding continuity. It controls what gets researched and if/how researchers are allowed to share their discoveries. There are no books to burn if the government never allows them to be written. This is fascism plain and simple.
Please, if you only ever write one public comment, this is the one to do.
Bringing back this guide to writing an effective public comment. This gives you the basics you need to know, what you need to include, a basic outline you can follow, etc.
Public comments are not a vote, it is a chance for you to say "here is an issue with this law I think you need to address" and provide justification for legal challenges if it goes forward:
"Comments raise the bar that agencies have to meet when making a rule; “if an agency fails to adequately respond to significant, relevant comments in a final rule, members of the public may seek to challenge the rule in court on that basis and claim it could be struck down.ˮ"
But also, if possible, don't stop at writing a comment. Don't stop at calling your representatives. You should ideally be talking to people in your community about this and organizing resistance on-the-ground; there is a good chance people are already doing that even if you aren't hearing about it.
finally took some better pictures of my last sweater project! I made this one while coping with an extended injury/surgery/recovery process over the summer, so I put a lot of time & attention into it. long-winded details and some more photos under cut....
every inch of it is handspun, the black/grey and white yarns processed from raw American Jacob and Gulf Coast Native fleeces respectively. there's also a few squares of natural brown CVM and fawn suri alpaca. started to spin the white yarn on my Schacht Matchless intending it for a different sweater, 150 grams in my injury forced me to pivot to the spindle & blending board for the rest.
pattern is End Times by Amy Gunderson, insofar as I constructed my own sweater by scrutinizing everyone else's project photos. I believe my squares were 12st on a side, on 2.75mm needles. 221 squares in all, so about 900 ends to weave in, almost half of them woven in as I went (I tried to carry the MC from square to square but it affected the stretch of the fabric). spent right around four months on the project, but again, was doing very little else with my time.
