It had taken six potions, a few rounds of CPR after Links breathing had stopped, and one mage to finally not only stabilize the young hero, but also to find out what was wrong.
Zelda paced the infirmary at the foot of Links bed, the nurses and all the personnel briefly banished in order for her to think.
According to the doctors this was a long time in coming because the magic in Links body had slowly been being poisoned by Hyrules magic for a long time now. In fact according to the doctors, Link should have collapsed years ago.
Zelda had wondered for several years why other adventurers from outside Hyrule would never stay long in Hyrule and often would avoid it entirely. Her question had been answered tonight.
It had taken hundreds of years for Hyrules people to adapt to the unique magic of the place and to just about everyone else the natural magic of Hyrule acted as a toxin.
Link had mentioned multiple times how potent the magic of Hyrule was but she had merely thought that it was only slightly above average.
Apparently the only thing slightly above average was Links ability to process Hyrules magic despite being a non-native.
According to the doctorâs Links distant fae relation and the constant fluctuations of the magic in his homeland of Calatia had allowed the toxic magic of Hyrule to be processed slowly by Links system.
This delicate balence had been enough for years but their most recent battle with Ganon had finally upset the careful stone stack of Links internal magic.
By draining himself of magic to fight the wizard in their last fight heâd not left enough of his own magic to filter Hyrules native magic.
His body tried to process it anyway desperate to fill empty reserves, but it had failed spreading the toxic magic through his very blood.
In simple terms. Link was dying. The doctors said if heâd had just a little more fairy blood in him it likely would have been fine, but he didnât and even as they spoke, more of Hyrules magic was seeping into him, and his body was becoming weaker and weaker.
The easiest way to fix it, the head doctor had admitted reluctantly was to use the few remaining potions Link had brought from his homeland and pair it with sleep spell long enough for him to be transported home.
There were two major problems with this solution though, Calatia was far, at least four days at a hard ride on horseback more with someone as injured as Link, and two they didnât have quite enough potions to keep Link stable for that long.
A third problem that had just been added was the one that Zelda was most concerned about at the moment. Ganon had appeared on the horizon a group of new forces around him. They were marching on the castle and without Link, Zelda wasnât sure how long they could hold him off.
She would have sent Link off anyway and done her best to hold the castle but a second row of soldiers had been spotted in the opposite direction. The castle was surrounded.
Zelda was desperate for some solution as she finally stopped her pacing and stared down at Link in his bed. His brow was still drenched in sweat his breaths labored, but he at least had regained some of the color heâd lost when he collapsed.
Zelda worried her lip, she was doomed if she did, she was doomed if she didnât, maybeâŚmaybe she could make deal with Ganon. The oafish pig was evil yes and determined to steal the triforce, but for all his failings he really was a remarkably talented mage.
Did he perhaps have a spell that could get Link to Calatia in time? It would be a risk certainly but so long as Link lived and she herself stayed out of Ganonâs grasp all could be fixed with time.
A war horn sounded outside the castle walls, and Zelda shook her head, she wasnât so foolish as to believe that would work, Ganon may be a fool, but even he wouldnât pass up the opportunity to ensure the death of his weakened foe.
She had only one real option. Darting out into the hall she told one of the guards just outside to fetch Alphonse.
Within minutes the tall dark haired form of Alphonse was at her side, his soldiers tunic as rumpled as ever. His green eyes searched hers, and he frowned his voice soft.
âWhy do I get the feeling your about to do something reckless your highnessâ
Zelda smiled weakly at the older man before glancing away
âI never could hide things from you.â
âAs I recall you hid many things from me when I was your guard distinctly I remember when you were five and the cooks tarââ
Zelda laughed a broken but real thing and swatted at him.
âYou were hardly any better I donât think Iâve seen any other teen eat near as much as you did back thenâ
Alphonse raised an eyebrow at that, but then his face slowly melted back into something soft but firm.
âWhat do you need your highness.â
Zelda sobered and looked back into the room, back at Link.
âIâm going to stall for time, time so that you can get Link to where he can heal. The faster he recovers the faster this mess will be resolved, but if we donât do something soon heâs going toââ
Zelda breathed and Alphonse looked at her something knowing in his eyes.
ââyour the fastest rider I know, you once crossed Hyrule in two days didnât you?â
Alphonse nodded his face grim
âI did what needed to be done.â
âThen do it once again please, because without you I fear Hyrule will loose its Hero and all its hope in a single evening.â
