Become a Castro Valley Booklegger!
A wonderful and flexible volunteer opportunity for people who love kids and books!
Bookleggers make magic! They are a group of volunteers dedicated to promoting independent reading by children. They do this by introducing books that kids simply can't resist. Bookleggers visit K to 5 classrooms in the Castro Valley United School District to share great books, including exciting adventures, suspenseful mysteries, hilarious comedies and eye-popping nonfiction.

At the Orientation Meeting you will meet library staff, get demonstration of Booklegging, learn about the training program, and understand the commitment necessary to ben outstanding Booklegger. In light of… er, let’s just call it a difficult year, it may have been be challenging for many people to come up with a list of things to be thankful for. In order to make life easier for those people, below is a list of literary characters who are more or less in the same boat. If nothing else, you can be thankful that your day is not as bad as theirs…
Katniss Everdeen (Catching Fire)

Please read all the materials here and here. We also ask that you visit the Bookmobile before you bid. Highest bid will be posted on the website each morning by 9:00 AM. You may increase your bid until Close of Bidding (Friday, December 9 @ 5 p.m.). You may increase your bid in increments of $25.00 until Close of Bidding. Bidding forms can be acquired by clicking here.
Winning bid must be paid within 3 days (certified funds) and the Bookmobile must be removed within 10 days. Buyer is responsible for towing the bookmobile to their location. The Bookmobile will be open for your inspection Friday, December 2 and Saturday, December 3, Tuesday, December 6 from 12 (noon) to 5 p.m. and by appointment. Coined in an era when comics were considered 'junk' culture, graphic novel is a hoary, meaningless, and often completely inaccurate term. Comics are comics; stop apologizing for them.
The terminology for what to call a thing that’s bound like a book but is made up of sequential art makes my head spin sometimes. I didn’t realize the term “graphic novel” goes back to 1978 — but it does.Â
My first encounter with it was with Maus and Maus II in college — gifts from my best friend. I pretty much ignored these types of books until 2009 when I was recruited, cajoled, into being a judge for the CYBILs and had to read 9 of them in a month.Â
I’m now a regular reader of these things. The ones I read fall into a small subset of genres: omnibuses of comics (Avatar, Ghostbusters, Jem, etc), memoirs (such as Tomboy, Relish), tween graphic novels (Ghosts, Roller Girl), and nonfiction (Hip Hop Family Tree). I’m not into superheros but I don’t think that the books I read are somehow better or more important than the superhero books — they remain the bread and butter of the industry.
I am all for a more inclusive term but will continue to call things generically “graphic novels” until something better comes up and is accepted/adopted by my field.Â
Excellent books featuring black main characters that aren't primarily about race and "the struggle."

December Book Sale is coming up
Dear Friends,
It is that time of the year again and the Friends December Book Sale is fast approaching. Â The sale is the first weekend in December. Â Setup begins on Thursday, December 1st, and the sale runs from Friday evening, December 2nd, until Sunday afternoon, December 4th. Â Final cleanup is Monday AM, December 5th.
This tri-annual email is to solicit your volunteer support for the sale. Â As usual, there is a sign-up sheet in the Friends Office and I would hope that you will be able to find some time to help. Â Only with the enthusiastic support of our great volunteer group are the Friends able to have successful sales that provide so much support to the library. Â The Castro Valley community really looks forward to our sales, particularly the December sale that has many wonderful books and other items available for holiday gifts.
Please stop by the Office, or call in, and add YOUR NAME to the volunteer list for as much time as you can provide.
