Ahhh I love these chapters. They're so good (and heartbreaking) because you finally get a look at wtf is going on in this guy's head.
Ogata is such a closed off character and his true motivations are so blurry. I spent the entire manga wondering why Ogata was even here? He doesn't really care about the gold or the other characters that much. But then at the very end you see his goal from the beginning was to become “a fine officer” just like his mother wanted. Simultaneously fulfilling his mother's wish, and proving that even someone “broken” like him could be just as good as someone who was born “blessed", like his brother Yuusaku.
Saying Ogata is messed up is an understatement, but he is also a horribly tragic character. Because despite everything, Ogata is still that little boy trying to get his mother's attention and approval.
