grumblin' and stumblin'
continued from here
Gaius' eyes roll way back. "S'not like I'm hittin' on you, Naga's tits, I don't swing that way, either." He gives Ms. Grumpy a closer look, and not-too-distant memories come flooding back. "Yeah, you remember me, don'cha? I'm Gaius. Crivens, I'm so lousy with names. Stumbles was the pegasus knight. Real lovely lady, real serious about her work - " - wait. This girl's got two moms that fit that description. Whoops. "Not the redhead," he amends, a bit embarrassed about how coarse he sounds. "The...other one. Sweet as pie but she tripped a lot. Y'know the one." He sighs. The sour look on Ms. Grumpy's face doesn't fill him with any confidence, either. "Anyway. I didn't mean to hit a nerve. I hope you like the flowers. And the chocolates, too; those are from the good stash." Gaius holds them out one more time, imploring her to take them so he can slip away. @cutestrival
"Oh!" Her other mother. Of course. Her two parents, one of which was a paragon of knightly cordiality, wrapped in the graces of the exalt and protecting the hope of the people of Ylisse. This man was not asking about her.
And Selena's heart swelled with pride.
"Heh, no ones ever told me I remind them of her." The comment is spoken much more quietly than her prior, more forceful words. Selena can't help but light up a little, coffee brown eyes sparkling a little brighter, despite the sun at her back. "Not with this hair color, at least. My sister is... Cynthia is usually the one of us that has her resemblance."
Her hands accept the chocolate in formality, but her mouth waters for their sugar later.
"You knew Mom, huh? You must've been close to give a nickname, right?" Her hands rub nervously over the gift. "Were you a Shepherd, like her?"
đ˛ omgđł hhi
The pouring rain hadn't exactly been an ideal outcome, but by the way it seemed to drown them, Selena was convinced that surely it must be some kind of divine retribution for her action. She would shake a fist to the sky, yell back at whatever higher power sought this, telling them that it wasn't her fault she was born at the wrong time. Well, were it not for the younger Black Eagle at her side. To Selena's eyes at least, she looked only a couple years younger; but her demeanor, more shy and mouse-like, could fool anyone.
"Hey, Bernadetta, huh? Listen to your upperclassman OK, I've got a plan." The plan in question? On her mark, run like hell. How many times had she had to sludge through a thunderstorm for her commander? It was another weekday to Selena; but, she couldn't help but want to help out a girl in need.
Without waiting for her reponse, she removes her jacket and drapes it over Bernadetta's cabbage of hair, making sure her forehead was properly covered with Selena's collar. "It's not much, but it's better than nothing. Alright, on the count of three, we'll run to that arcade by the dormitories. Heh."
"3... 2..." She steals another glance at her classmate, making sure the jacket remains affixed to her head. Even if they get drenched, it'll be a memory to remember, or whatever, right? "...1! RUN!"
Her boots slosh merrily in the puddles formed in their path. It's a whirlwind of soaked red hair and rain plastering her face. By the time she reaches the relative shade of the arcade's cover, Selena feels more like she's run a practice lap at the training grounds. Still, she turns just in time to see Bernadetta barrel into her, vision obscured by the oversized jacket pulled down over her eyes. "Woah...!"
They're a mess of limbs and rainwater, but Selena can't help but laugh. Enjoying a normal oddball day, like any other student at Garreg Mach, felt like a privilege. Not on the run from monsters, and not running from battle. It's a shrill note that pierces the pitter patter of the continuous shower. "Ha, ha! That was great! We made it!" She finds Bernadetta's forehead amid their tired slump on the floor, and presses a light kiss. "Good job!"

[FUTURE PAST AU]
Her friends run ever onward, the rain and risen hot on their heels. Severa stands sentinel in the entrance of the cathedral, eyes once far off now tracking meticulously, making sure without a doubt that they make it to her. The light of the brazier illuminates cloaked figures' faces, and her eyes soften as she sees damage minimal. "The gem...?" Is an unspoken question on her lips, but as soon as Brady and Yarne pass through the gate, the former tugs at his pockets. Argent shimmers brilliantly despite its bleak environment.
Half of a sigh of relief gets through her lips before she looks to Yarne. Her eyes are pleading; and in response, he too produces a gem. Severa takes it from him wordlessly, letting fall her cloak from worn shoulders, wrapping it around the three children. She doesn't have to ask to know the reason Inigo and Owain are not present.
The dingy cobblestones pool rainwater at their feet, signaling their reunion's close. Severa nods at each of them in turn. To Yarne, she includes a smalll smile and nod; or, the best she can muster, considering the circumstances. She knows he must be scared out of his mind, even moreso than usual. Not that it wasn't nearly daily that they lost allies, friends, familly. Though she's relinquished the cloak to her back once more, she wraps a strong arm the taguel, resting her chin atop his mangy head of hair. Her own mousy brown hair begins to soak up the rain leftover from his flight, wetting her forehead, fallling to her eyelids, and rolling down her cheeks. Her sobs are as silent as she can make them, and she hopes that Yarne does not notice, but she no longer cares. She lets the tears fade into Yarne's hair, falling next to his ears, and presses a kiss to the top of his head when they land.
"Oh, Yarne..."

Cynthia & Selena
Cynthia's face was buried deeply in a pillow. She snored softly, dreaming up something about her pegasus. She reached over to brush her beloved mountâs mane, when she heard Selena call to her. She looked to her side, and there she was, on a pegasus of her own.
Wait a second.
Cynthia blinked. She was in her room, by herself. That was when she realised she had dreamed the whole thing. It wasn't like Selena wanted to hang out with her anyway, right?
But Selena kept talking. She was behind the door, and Cynthia was still in her Golden Deer pyjamas. Ah, shoot. Shoot! How much has she ignored? Her hair was a mess, and she was so woefully underprepared for going to get tea or anything like that. She shot up out of bed.
âI'm up!â she called. No school day, no school uniform. She grabbed whatever clothes she could find. She had to have clean underwear around here somewhere, right? âYeah we can go to the market - no, wait thatâs not what you asked. Or tea. Or wherever you wanna go, really!â She pulled on her socks. She wasnât used to visitors, especially in the morning. She especially wasnât used to her sister at her door.
âGimme five?â She found underwear. âYeah, five minutes, and Iâll be right out, okay? We can go wherever you want. And I wanna see that ring, too!â Was that what Selena was talking about? Cynthia couldnât remember; it was too early to think.
From the commotion going on inside the room, Selena doesnât know what to think. Is she stalling? Is she hesitating, for something as random as Selena choosing to drop by? It had already been a good few months since the sisters had returned from Leicester⌠maybe, Cynthia found their ânewâ relationship awkward?
âFive minutes? Did you just wake up, or what?â Though her words are always a little sharp, her tone gives in instead, softening its edges. She isnât mad, just a little curious. It is her free day, after all. She leans her back against Cynthiaâs door. This is so embarrassing. Honestly, it would have been better if she had just said no!
The minutes ticked by, agonizingly slow. Five minutes were finally up; so, where was Cynthia, then? âHey, I waited, alright? Now open up!â Selena jiggled the door handle hopelessly, as if the thought of its unlocking would make it so. âIâm hungry, come on! Get out here! What, you got a date later or something? Whatâs the hold up!â
it's not like I'm worried about you or anything
mission >> axe +1
Gerome had only intended to free the webbing from the ceiling and then work on freeing the child with more careful, precise cuts. He knew how to wield his axe as if it was his own arm, but this close to a human and in this light, he could not trust that a mistake wouldn't happen. When Selena urged him to, he moved aside, giving her room to work near the child's head as he cast a fervid glance at their surroundings. In his hands, he pulled and discarded the webbing that dulled his blade. His ears kept ringing with the spider's scittering but he couldn't be sure it wasn't the cavern's echoes playing tricks on him.
His attention snapped back as Selena freed the child's head and her pallid features stared back with glossy eyes. If he had not already stared death in the face, it would have sent a shiver down his spine. Or he had simply grown to used to not allowing himself to feel.
Gerome hefted his axe once more and pressed it against the last remaining webbing that attached the cocoon to the ceiling. He sawed through it, the webs snapping and curling around his blade as inch by inch it came undone.
There, the sound again. It felt so much more real than the echoes.
His axe was almost through. Gerome pushed harder. Almost...
From somewhere in the dark, the spider's many eyes bored into his back. It was drawing closer.
The last of the webbing snapped free and Gerome caught the cocoon as it fell and covered it with his body, knowing that he'd taken too long and the spider was bearing down on him. He braced to take the blow.
He would not let this child die.
There were too many moving parts, Selena mind raced to catch them as they happened. Gerome, hacking away nobly at the captured child. The spider, moving quickly and quietly, just out of sight. Selenaâs torch, its spark waning every second. It was a whirlwind of information to take in, but Selena parsed it quickly, honing in on the one situation in which she could help. Large legs, thick as spearheads, descend on Gerome, his back covering the child as much as possible; and Selena lets clatter her bow, drawing instead a sword nearly as familiar to her as her company.
Just as the spiderâs talons extend, Selena dashes forward, sword outstretched. The blade cleaves through cleanly, sweeping between Gerome and his peril; the spider collapses atop his back, thoroughly crippled. It hisses, and clicks its mandibles angrily. In response, Selena delivers a second stab, between the eyes.Â
âThat oughta show that guy,â she heaves, withdrawing her sword as the last of adrenaline-fueled strength leaves her arms. Reluctantly, she puts her hands to the giant carcass, pushing it from her old friend. A low grumble can be heard as its weight shifts to the floor. âBlegh.â
âGerome, howâs the kidâŚ?â The darkness encloses upon them, the final embers burning out on their torch. Though Selena tosses the question his way, her hands are busy fumbling at her belt pouches for a tinderbox. âAlive, right?â Her fingers fall on the familiar box. A quick strike, and her masked companion once again hovers before her. âRight?â
[ CHOCOLATE ] A delicious luxury and a classic gift. Choose from white, milk, or dark, all heart-shaped and ready for your enjoyment.
"there you are!" the tactician paced slowly towards the redhead, giving her a wide smile. remembering silently as he began to open his mouth, to remember her new name. "i hope you're enjoying the party so far, selena." he wasn't exactly sure what you were supposed to be enjoying, but maybe it was just the company? the tactician pondered if he was the kind of company she wanted these days, but ignored the thought.
"you were always making us things, so i thought today i could repay part of the favor." from behind the lad's back, he revealed a heart shaped box which hid assorted chocolates. "i know i didn't exactly make these, but- well, i'm probably sparing your taste buds getting the ones here. i hear there's all kinds of flavors in here, so you're bound to like at least one."
of course in his moment of still, he feels a poke at his side, a foreign object caught on his cloak perhaps. when he turns, behind him is one of the party hosts, and a flashy cage that he beckons morgan towards. "ah, right... well, i hope we'll be seeing more of each other from now on, selena. see ya later!"
"They certainly went all out for the celebration," she smiles, accepting his outstretched gift. This sort of party does remind her of festivals of Ylisse long past; but well, a party's a party, isn't it? Or, maybe her present company just makes her feel more at home.
She can't help but laugh when Morgan brings up his cooking. True enough, there's relief in receiving something purchased rather than handcrafted. For once, Selena's not so prude to bring it up, but an ironic smile can't help but tug at her lips. "Easy enough. I love all sorts ofchocolates, you know."
Though Morgan is quickly led away, she rubs her thumb over the gift. Always nice to still feel wanted, heh heh. Especiallly from an airhead like that boy.
[ DRINKS ]
âIf it isnât Selena, eyes as red as love? My heart canât help but beat faster each time I catch youâ A pale hand offered her a glass filled with some juicy drink he couldnât quite identify. It was non-alcoholic, perfectly safe and perfectly tasty, just good enough to kickstart some fun. âYou look even cuter than the last time I saw you, what a gift to have you at this party! I canât help but hope that youâre my match!âÂ
With a light laugh, he gave her a wink. âI wouldnât mind getting to talk to you more later, letâs catch up!â
"Oh, you again." She takes the drink, taking an eager sip. It's super sweet, and delightful on her tongue. Were this anyone else she might have said thank-you. "You know, you're lucky I'm used to hopeless fools like you."
Still, compliments work wonders on a redhead who hasn't kissed anyone in nearly a year.
"You know what? Sure," she waves away his wink. "What do you have to talk about, loverboy? Maybe we'll fing something in common for all the skirts we're both chasing."

Wolf in Wolf's Clothing
"Moreso for rescue work. Their noses are perfect for finding people buried under rubble, their paws are great for digging people out, they're loud enough to get attention from others if it's needed, and they can carry anyone badly injured to safety. Plus, they can climb up steeper surfaces than a horse can, and can make safer leaps. They're perfect for that job."
Mareeta shakes her head, leaning down to rub her wolf's stomach, looking down at her sheath.
"And sorry for calling you that - I haven't got your name, so it's the best with what I've got. Would you prefer Little Red? Firecracker? Work with me here a little."
Mareeta sighs, reaching over to the supply of treats, chuckling as the fluffball all but swallows it whole.
"We're on this duty together. May as well make it as enjoyable for us as it is for the little guys. Plus, it's gonna go perfectly, anyhow."
How could it not? The perfect swordswoman is on the job.
âAhâŚâ Truth be told, she really hadnât considered that. Unfortunately, the woman made a good point; and, there werenât exactly people specialized in that sort of thing, from the wars Selena came from, anyways. But sheâd never admit that, not when she didnât have the decency to even ask her name!
She huffed at Mareetaâs back. Nevertheless, she scooped up a few treats to dole out herself.
âThe nameâs Selena, by the way. Royal retainer of Nohr, master mercenary! And what might you be called, hm? Professional snappy mouth?â
Selena set herself down beside the pups, content to take this space for the rest of their shift. That woman had one thing right, at least: their duties would be perfectly. This, she too was certain.Â
âWhere are you from, anyhow? You do a lot of rescuing, yourself?â
Raise Thy Sword
Epiphany Finale, Cathedral | Unit 10
As they slay the group of monsters that had been just before the entrance to the grand hall of the cathedral itself, their group is struck by magic from the opposite direction and forced to retaliate. Lukas brings up the rear to make sure that their less sturdy comrades aren't left vulnerable while the redhead leads the charge.
But as soon as they adjust their attention to the mages, another enemy is at their backs, flanking them.
It was a bit, ironic, wasn't it?
They're caught between the two within the connecting corridors, and there's nowhere to take cover as the mages send another barrage of magic their way.
And then there's a terrible roar, a shriek that pierces through flesh and bone just as swiftly as it does the heart.
Lukas has enough time to get his shield up, but he's not properly planted for the blow that crashes into him. Large claws rend metal with ease, and he does not need to be able to feel the pain of the blow to know that his shield arm has been broken by that singular attack. He's thrown back, staggering to maintain his footing and not break the only point of defense between these beasts and the rest of his unit.
"Fall back...Fall back!" he shouts over his shoulder, sparing a glance just long enough to see one of the women already crumpling to the ground.
This is what he was built for. To be the blockade that allowed others to hopefully retreat.
"You have to go, now. Back towards the bridge! Take her and run," Lukas orders, burying his axe into the side of one of the creatures -- it doesn't seem to slow down, its hide too thick -- so that he can haul Ena up with his good arm and hand her off to the other two. "I'll buy you what time I can, but you must go now and not turn back for anything."
He still doesn't know if Forsyth and Python yet live.
Lukas pulls the lance from his back, forcing his broken arm to raise his wreaked shield up once more. If he could give them even the smallest chance of getting away, he would secure it with his life. The beasts crash and rampage through the rubble, howling in their own torment as they return for another attack.
"So this...is the last place I'll see. So be it."
He does not falter to meet them, but he does not rise once fangs and claws drag him down.
Far be it from Selena to be the one saying she shouldnât lead, but well, things truly did never work out her way when given initiative. Just as soon as she launches forward, adrenaline channeled into the next chapter of their offense, a screech from behind freezes her blood. Her mind registers it fully, but her feet continue onwards. Just as the mages level sparks in their direction, she hears the unmistakable crunch of talons on steel.Â
As it turns out, fire balls are a lot easier to dodge when oneâs mind is not distracted.
Her footing fumbles on the impact of the fire, scorched cobblestones beneath her shaking with force enough to level a small village, and Selena is knocked down. Her hips slam into the ground hard, and her sword skids from her opened palm. Flames roll up from cracked stones around her, caging her in, but itâs not like she wants to go anywhere, now. Ashes pepper her brow.Â
In the haze of smoke, sheâs dimly aware of her allies falling behind her, one by one. The pink-haired woman falls to her knees, a dark shadow tearing away from her. The stalwart shield of the red knight is shredded and feeble. His cries are muffled against the crackle of the flames, but somehow Selena understands. With one hand, she claws her way towards the womanâs body, but⌠It was over as quickly as their assault had begun. Selenaâs arm, propping her up with the faintest adrenaline of hope, falters, and she embraces the warmed stones beneath her cheek.Â
What a long nightmare.Â
The little girl who had warned her of the mages had not been seen through the embers. Selena closes her eyes. Poor girlâŚ

Epiphany Finale, Cathedral | Unit 10
Sara wasn't there to witness the academy's fall from grace, though the aftermath at least tells her it must have been a gruesome battlefront to behold, a memory embedded as deeply in the of battered bricks of surrounding buildings as the hearts of those driven from the monastery they had come to call home.
The Cathedral towers high above them, banners torn into ribbons and tree limbs broken at awkward angles everywhere they choose to turn.
A man in red charges the cornered horde of beasts hobbling away from some other encounter through which they seemed to have sustained bright wounds, barely able to mount a resistance to the ambush. As the unit cuts down the last of them, Sara senses foul magic circulating in the air and braces for it to crash over them like an angry sea.
"Mages," she hisses, ducking behind an arm to shield her eyes from the blast. "If left unchecked, they will only continue to hound us from afar. Should we pursue them?"

The girlâs hiss thrums a chord against her ear, and Selena faces forward at their enemy. The circumstances of the battle were beyond her, frankly; something about retaking, and preventing, blah blah blah. It was all normal wartime things, far above her pay grade. What wasnât above her duties however, are the series of foes that mar her vision, and are clearly prime for knocking down. Just as she eyes them, sizing them up, light strikes through her vision, chilling the air around her.
So much for the girlâs heads up.
Selena doubles over, clenching her abdomen. Oh, those mages would absolutely get it now! She calls forward, sword pointed tersely at their foe. âYou think thatâll slow me down? Think again! Come on!â She pushes off her heel, dashing forward, her sword poised to barrel into the closest member of the opposition. Dimly, sheâs aware of allies close by, inclusive of the soldier in red and the quiet girl, closing in with her.

Camilla smiles as she places the last present in front of Selena's door. She did NOT go overboard at all. Just a few fine clothes, some chocolate, very good wine, wonderful warming face masks...
She maybe went a little overboard... But it was fun going overboard on someone's birthday!
She left the wonderful pile of presents in front of he darling retainer's door and walked away with a smile on her face, knowing that Selena would be pleased with everything Camilla had gifted her.
Having to attend class on her birthday didnât mean much to Selena. After all, itâs not like the Shepherds nor the Nohrian royal guard had holidays for reasons as menial as that. But still, it didn't stop her being a little grumpy traipsing back to their dorm room. She stomps up the stairs.
Another year gone, huh⌠Selena was at least glad not to spend it alone this year. She didnât exactly have many confidants who would throw her a party, or anything - nor did she expect any gifts. If little else, a quiet evening with some nice food and drink would do her soul much good, she thinks, climbing the final stair and noticing a large commotion in the corridor before her room.
WaitâŚin front of MY room?
Her pace picks up, confusion beginning to prick at her expression. A small mountain of boxes and items had somehow piled themselves in front of her door. She recognized a few of the packages: high-end makeup, expensive clothes, foreign chocolates. Her eyes wander over the treasure trove, curious; until she alights finally upon a bouquet of roses. A smile creeps across her lips, then flowers, blooming genuine delight across her face.Â
It had been a long day - a long year, even. Even still, her lady had not forgotten. She'd celebrate a little, then: for her.
The âthunkâ of a dagger hitting the wooden wall behind Selena is the only indication of Shamirâs presenceâ the accuracy is uncanny, considering the fact that it sailed right past the girlâs head.
Thereâs a small card hanging from the handle, tied carefully in place, the writing far more refined than youâd initially believe.
âItâs a hunting knife,â Shamir finally speaks, arms crossed over her chest. âThe pattern on the hilt is one youâd commonly see from leatherworkers in Dagda. Itâs cured and woven in a specific manner for more durability and a better grip.â
The smallest hint of a smirk graces the mercenaryâs lips, raising a hand to wave before continuing on her merry way without much further explanation.
The card that dangles reads:
âMaybe thisâll help you put up more of a fight the next time you decide to sneak up on me.
Happy birthday.â
The wind that scares her, as the dagger sails past her nose to its mark, might as well be a hurricane, the way Selena yelps, jumping backwards, hands flying to her face. She looks around wildly for her sneak attacker - how ridiculous! The words that reach her ears do little to settle her stomach, narrowed eyes turning angrily towards the mercenary.
âWhat is wrong with you?â Gods, that scared the shit out of me. âI donât care how good this knife is, I couldâveâŚâ Selenaâs eyes trace Shamirâs silhouette as it retreats into shadow, and her surprise becomes fury. âG-get back hereâŚ!â she wails; but really, chasing someone down was about the last thing she wanted to do, shaken as she was.Â
With an exasperated sigh, she turns to the wall pierced by this so-called âgiftâ. Affixed to the hilt is a small note, and Selena tugs at it impatiently. Unfortunately, sheâs far from happy with its contents.
âGODS DAMN IT!â she roars at the innocent wall. That stupid mercenary thinks theyâre oh, soooo much better than me, huh? Selena spits at the ground. Why even give her a gift today? Itâs not like that pushover knows itâs her birthday, of all things.Â
Ugh. She pulls the knife from the wall, twirling it in her fingers as she wanders back to her room. Her cheeks redden with further frustration, with a final realization. No kidding, itâs a good knife tooâŚ

"I heard it was a lovely lady's birthday today." Gaius slots in beside Selena and hands her a tulip bouquet from the marketplace. He's even sacrificing a couple of his nicest chocolate hearts for the occasion.
Peeking over the flowers, his brows knit together. "Hmm. You look awfully familiar. Aren't you Stumbles' kid?"
First, sheâs met with the misfortune of a man proposing a bouquet of flowers. But, the implication that this orange-haired fool knows one of her parents?Â
Oh, this guyâs really gonna get it.
Selena purses her lips, and accepts the manâs gifts. Sheâd like nothing more than to simply yell at him, kick him real hard in the shins, and run away, butâŚit was her birthday after all. Surely she could offer something a bit more mature, right?
âUm, thank you for the gifts,â she begins, eyeing the chocolates in particular. âBut Iâm sorry, I donât swing that way.â Alright, the easy partâs down. Selena clears her throat before continuing.
âI⌠donât know how you can know one of my parents, but you should know Iâm not exactly keen on talking about them, mister. Who exactly is âStumblesâ, anyway?â She does admit, it would be funny were it to end up being a name for Cordelia, of all people.

#TOAEPIPHANY2025 || Week 3: Combat [Team 11]
Shezâs heart leaps into her throat seeing Al pull that dagger out of his side. To be fair, sheâd definitely do the same thingârunning around with that inside you would just worsen the damage, not to mention how much that would hurt. But that doesnât mean itâs good!
She comes to Alâs side, gripping his shoulder to get his attention. âGood speech! Now head off to Maria.â Having white magic clerics on the battlefield to heal is something sheâs seen highborn knights and students take for granted. âBefore it gets worse, yâhear?â
Shez pushes forward and takes the Masked Man by surprise. His magic shakes the earth itself, putting her off-balance, but she adapts quickly. His robes provide little protection against her swordâheâs finished in seconds. A draconic beast comes in quick, breathing ice magic from its maw. Shez manages to slash its hide, enough to slow it down but not to kill.
âCareful with that thing!â
Satisfied with Azamaâs performance (while choosing to ignore his combative words), Selena turns to other matters. With renewed vigor, in no small part due to Mariaâs healing magic, a gloved hand bats her temples, focusing her eyes once again. Fresh eyes mark two shapes in the distance, and Selena nocks two arrows pointedly. Only a whistle on the wind declares their approach, but two howls denote their impact.Â
She canât help but smile at her success, just a little. Come on, who else is hitting shots like mine?
The blue-haired boyâs cry grounds her back in reality. Heâs only a shadow, blurry at the periphery of the archerâs keen eye, but his words of determination resonate all the same. Itâs true; the fight isnât over, no matter how bad it looks or how cocky Selena gets. Giant hooves pound the grass, shaking the ground towards her, and Selena frees a third arrow. The dark figure is upon her faster than anticipated though; the graze of a polearm cuts deep into Selenaâs shoulder. She winces.Â
âThat hurt dammit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!âÂ
One foot falls back to stabilize herself, but as the rider comes back for another blow, Selena grits her teeth. âOh, no, none of that! Weâre ending this!â Despite their proximity, her arrow-tip is leveled up towards her enemyâs face (or, where it should be), and she pulls back the heaviest draw she can muster despite her shoulder.Â
At the speed at which the horse strides toward her, there would be no way to both kill its rider and get out of the way. If the arrow is to pierce her foeâs head, neck, or heart, perhaps the best she can expect is for their grip to go slack on the reins. However, if Selena were to cripple the horse instead⌠At the last second, Selenaâs arrow is lowered, then fired, sticking fast and true at the horseâs knee. Both horse and rider careen to the side, crashing through the forestâs underbrush in pain. Their cries grow distant, and then falter. Selena gasps and sighs, leaning into a nearby tree. âJob well done, I guess,â she mutters to no one but herself.Â
Though the forest is far from quiet still, she lumbers towards the edge of the treeline, clutching her shoulder gingerly. But, the sight that meets her isnât as hopeful as sheâd like. She hardly batts an eye at the dragon, nor the giant mechanical thing that greets her, instead looking around for familiar red hair. This wound would have to be treated soon: it was as if the mercâs skin peeled away from the injury, sizzling and writhing. No sooner does Selena spot the young cleric that she feels the effects of healing light once again, as if she had read her mind.Â
So much for a break from battle. Selena manages a small âthanksâ under her breath, and turns back to the fray.Â
The large automaton, creaking unnaturally in the low light, is the most obvious target, especially for a tired thing as herself. Its height clearly defined by the dim sky behind it, even a newly healed arm as her own could land a volley. Though torn and soft with her blood, her gloved hand reaches back for an arrow. The last of her energy lost as it twangs from her hand, she tosses her bow aside. Best to leave the stragglers to her sword-arm, instead.Â
Her heroâs sword unsheathed once more, she roars as she runs at her foe. Out of energy? Generate your own. With her whole body weight behind it, the bets it all on this one thrust, sent straight to the thingâs throat. Whether the damage is enough, who can say; regardless, she maintains her momentum and dashes past, just out of the dragonâs reach. Only as she retakes a position among her allies does Selena realize that the blow all but shattered the blade. She tosses it aside, and grabs at the sword tied to her other hip. One last weapon, huh? All right buddy, itâs you and me.
Slowly, she lifts it above her head. One more blow, Selena, one more blow! Go, Go, GO! Her boots spring off the soft soil, and blade and fighter as one acquaint the thick side of the dragon.Â
She practically wants to flop down in the mud right then and there, exhausted. Selena heaves against the side of the monster. âDid we do it?â She hopes her words donât fall on deaf ears. Somehow.
