It has been a tough year, for everyone, all over the world. Besides the isolation, the virus, and the pure fucking insanity of what we allowed that sociopath to do to our country, I lost my father. My dad was this amazing man that just by living his life taught me what being a good man was all about. He flew planes, he raced cars, he was passionate about sailing. He studied calligraphy and became a master of the art, he loved photography. He even learned to develop his own film and prints. He loved jazz and classical music. He loved reading Hemmingway and Norman Mailer. He worshiped my mother, supported her career, her interests, everything and anything. My dad was gifted with two sons.. My brother loved basketball, cars. Motorcycles and fishing. I loved Art and Music, I loved cinema. I liked photography. Somehow dad found the time to take my brother to ball games, and motor cross events and fishing trips and he took me to gallery showings, help build me my own darkroom, read Himmingway to me, and listened to hours and hours of music with me. My brother and I continued to take very different paths as we grew into men...we would go to different universities. My brother would meet the love of his life, get married and bring three new members of our family into the world. I took a few years to see the world and to explore a few boundaries. Someone did finally steal my heart and I would bring him home to meet my folks. My dad always told me to never apologize for living my life.
And he told me to always remember that the heart is an involuntary muscle and to just sleep where you rest your head and all we be well.
I was with my dad when he passed. I held him and felt that amazing life force leave his body. I miss him. I miss him everyday. But so much of what he was is still very much alive in what he passed onto my brother an I. That is what gets me through my day. That's what gives me purpose. That's why I know that we all will get through this last leg of this shitty year.. just live your life with love and no fear. A life lived with fear is a life half lived and there is no life without love.
