I'm reading a letter from Isaac Abravanel, a major 15th century figure in the Jewish community of Portugal, describing how he and other community leaders raised money to ransom 200+ Moroccan Jews who had been sold into slavery. The Portuguese community appointed 12 men symbolizing the 12 tribes to do this, and they were able to successfully reunite all the families and identify how many people were still enslaved. It looks like they were able to free and reunite everyone but about 30 people at the time the letter was written, as well as provide the Moroccan Jews with food, clothes, and housing after they had lost literally everything (including the clothes on their backs) when they were captured back in Morocco.

I don't know how people who consider themselves progressives can say stuff like "there will only be peace in the Middle East if Jews stop trying to live in the Judea and Samaria - wait, the West Bank." You're essentially saying we'll only stop killing each other if the area is completely Jew-Free.

Don't try to give me that "Oh, the reason we care so much about Israel and not other human rights violators is because Israel is a a US (or UK, or European) ally and we send them weapons and tax money!" You know who else is a US ally we send money to for security cooperation? Fucking Pakistan. You got anything to say about them sending thousands of Afghan refugees back over the border to starve under the Taliban? Or their blasphemy laws? No? We don't give aid to the UAE or Saudi Arabia because they sure as shit don't need it, but we do sell them weapons and cooperate with them on intelligence and security. Any thoughts on the Saudi bombing and blockade of Yemen that was creating the world's biggest humanitarian crisis a few years ago? Or the UAE funding and arming the RSF's civil war in Sudan, including their Darfur genocide (the sequel), which has now overtaken it? Not to mention the abuse and enslavement of migrant workers! You want to set up an encampment at your university demanding they divest from the UAE or stop taking money from Qatar? It's all dirty fossil fuel money anyway! Don't you want to harass your political representatives and threaten them with death if they don't promise never to take money from Gulf Arab interests, and always to vote against weapons sales to them?
