Curating Sound (sound and space)

Somewhat of a radical departure from last weeks entry. This week finds me in Buckingham on an archaeological dig. I’ll be in the area for the next four weeks (returning to Glasgow at the weekends) so expect field recordings from the locality for the next month.

Newlands Park, Glasgow 14/02/2015

Linn Park is situated in the Southern fringes of the city. It is a spectacular area w/ both woodland and open fields offering a large variety of scenery year round. The obvious place to take the recording was at the breath-taking waterfalls on the white cart river and enjoy its rich tones. 

This week I spent time in the small Welsh village of Trefriw in the Conwy Valley. I was visiting some family that I hadn’t seen for over two and a half years. During a morning walk around a lake, amidst the snow, rain and wind we decided to take a ‘selfie’ and that moment was when the recording was taken. The recording is particularly significant to me as when I listen to it, it totally transports me back to that moment in an extremely vivid and clear way. The sound of the recording alone is enough to trigger a strong and happy recollection of that time. Interestingly, I found that listening to the recording and specifically the voices of those in my family whom I see rarely, stimulated a greater emotional response than looking at the actual ‘selfie’ photograph that was taken from that day.

This week we visited Kelvingrove, a familiar location to not just both us, but to many people who have visited or live in Glasgow. Facing the University of Glasgow in an fantastic location which complements its vast and prestigious collection. We used the central hall to begin this project because it is, in a sense, the centre of Glasgow and an obvious starting point. Recorded on iphone 4.
