His whole “archetypes” philosophy couldn’t be more flimsy, but either because he NEEDS himself to believe it or because he’s burned all of his bridges, he genuinely can’t conceive of the nuances in the rest of the cast.

He can only see Zooble, Gangle, and Ragatha as grumpy, sad, and tryhard cheerful respectively because to see any other side of them would require him to earn a level of emotional trust with each. He can’t ever register Kinger as more than “crazy” because that would mean because the instant he were to encounter a cogent Kinger, he’d probably run screaming from the cognitive dissonance.

Accepting that absolutely no one in the circus has actually become an archetype would require to him to not immediately, reflexively shoot down any vulnerabilities he encounters in them. But Jax is allergic to earnestness, he’s completely irony poisoned, so he can’t just let them be human beings with real feelings that are worth anyone’s time.

In his constant mockery, Jax is admonishing the rest of the circus for not “playing their roles” properly, and by being a dick to everyone he’s ensuring that Zooble’s grumpiness, Gangle’s sadness, etc is all he ever gets to see out of them.

It’s easier to believe that’s just “what’s they’re like,” than to accept he could’ve actually connected with them if not for his own choices.
