I spent almost 8 years of my life being a competitive figure skater. From the ages of probably 7 to 15, skating was my entire life. The whirlwind of performances, practices, injuries, and everything in between made me fall in love with the sport, and it holds such a special place in my heart as one of my favorite art forms in the entire world. Skating was my creative outlet, and being able to tell a story through my movements in such an athletic and genuine way was something I loved. The combination of artistry and athleticism was perfect for me, and I honestly attribute so much of the person I am today to the fact that I grew up in the sport. When I was little, being expressive and honest through my movements and facial expressions in performances was so natural to me, because it was all so genuine. I had such a passion for performing over the technical side of the sport. I was never the best jumper, or the fastest spinner, but I could feel the music and perform to it, and the artistic side is my favorite thing about the sport, and always will be. I have memories of waking up at 5:00 a.m. to get to the rink before school so I could be the only one out there on the ice and play music and just skate to it. As I got older, I moved to a more competitive environment where artistry became less valued and competition and points meant everything, which eventually led to me leaving the sport I dedicated years of my life to. I was burned out, and my passion just wasnât there anymore. Ashley Wagner doing her program to La La Land at Nationals in 2018 is one of my favorite moments, because I remember sitting and watching her perform on my T.V. after I had quit, and feeling the same spark of artistry that had once inspired me, too. Ashley had a lot riding on this performance. If she lost, she would miss her final opportunity to represent the U.S. at the Winter Olympics. But her program is one of my favorites because of the pure emotion behind it all. I love the choreography, and the music is from one of my favorite soundtracks of all time, so it really resonated with me. Skating for me will always be about the performance over the technicality, because performing from the heart can inspire people and stay with them always, like Ashleyâs program did with me.
