OH MY GOD THATS RIGHT. Everyone focuses on the fact that Kane Parsons is 20, while not really touching on the fact that he did not live through the 90s, when his film takes place.

He created the 90s through memories of those who lived it; familiar but not quite right. I’m an older millennial (‘91) from Hawaii, a State which didn’t reflect the 90s landscape of the rest of the US. Therefore I couldn’t recognize any possible imperfections of the depiction of the 90s (scarce as it was) in the movie. But I’m sure many people born in the 70s/80s did.

The movie itself is metatextually within the Backrooms; it’s an imperfect copy of memories of the 90s. I’ve seen comparisons between Bobby’s “End Apartheid” shirt and the vintage version, but I’m not sure which one is more accurate to the era. If it’s the vintage tee, it would absolutely fit this theory.

I keep seeing this same criticism of the backrooms and it bugs me because I don’t think it’s bad writing at all? You learn about the characters more from what they IMPLY versus what they SAY. That’s GOOD writing.

For example, Clark says he “hurts people.” He harps on and on about how the fight that got him kicked out of his house was because he broke a glass. And the fact that he’s in therapy when he’s a character who clearly does NOT want to better himself all tell you what’s going on.

Clark lies. He didn’t “just break a glass” he came home in a drunken stupor and abused his wife. He’s in therapy most likely not because he wants to be, but because he’s so broken and abusive that it’s been court mandated. His assertion that he hurts people comes around towards the end of the movie when he enjoys being in the backrooms specifically BECAUSE the entities there feel no pain and allow his abusive tendencies to FLOURISH. He is borderline a serial killer in the making BEFORE he even finds the backrooms.
