❛  no  way  …..  you’re  a  REAL  MERMAID  ?  ❜  alberto  ZIPS  around  her  ,  a  RAPTUROUS  GRIN  spread  WIDE  across  the  sea  monster’s   face  .

he’d  heard  stories  about  them  .  EVERY  sea  monster  does  ——-  some  scoff  at  the  rumblings  of  a  distant  cousin  with  skin  as  smooth  as  a  human’s  and  tails  as  VIBRANT  as  the  sunset  when  it  hits  the  surface  just  right  .  some  ,  like  his  …..  like  his  dad  ….. like  the  man  who  raised  him  ,  would  BRAG  about  how  he’d  met  one  once  ,  on  an  ADVENTURE  in  a  neighboring  sea  .  he’d  even  tell  alberto  tails  of  how  he’d  woo’d  his  fair  share  of  the  beautiful  hybrids  .

that  was  about  the  point  alberto  would  tune  him  out  ,  bored  to  agony  by  the  regailing  of  the  man’s  numerous  romances  .  yuck  .

still  ,  no  one  he  knows  has  ever  actually  MET  one  .  no  one  who  has  a  habit  of  telling  the  truth  ,  anyway  .

❛ that’s  !  —–  ❜ the  sea  monster  stops  himself  ,  slowing  to  a  still  drift  as  he  clears  his  throat  and  offers  a  casual  shrug  ,  ❛  i  mean  ,  y’know  ,  that’s  pretty  cool  ,  i  guess  ,  ❜

❛  what  are  you  doing  all  the  way  out  here  ?  i  didn’t  think  you  guys  wandered  anywhere  near  the  shore  ….  ❜

 she  may  be  laughing  ,    but  arthur’s  definitely  not  .      it’s  a  funny  sentiment  ,    his  prior  inability  to  get  blackened  anything  right                but  he’s  also  not  about  to  ruin  her  fun  or  her  humour  .      so  he  lets  her  laugh  ,    busying  himself  with  navigating  to  the  right  site  and  tapping  through  their  online  order  menu  .      yada  yada  ,    they’ll  pick  it  up  .      maybe  bring  it  back  ,    maybe  eat  somewhere  else  .

 it  takes  him  a  second  before  he  finally  spots  her  signing  again  .      he  looks  up  ,    squinting  in  thought  .        ❝  how’d  you  manage  to  get  a  run  in  with  sea  shepherd  ?    ❞        is  he  interested  ?      hell  yeah  ,    he’s  interested  .      stupidly  :        (    shouldn’t  aquaman  be  staying  out  of  things  ?    )  .        ❝  yeah  ,    i  want  in  .      but  you  gotta  be  the  one  to  tell  them  aquaman’s  joining  .  ❞

 ❝  he  taught  me  how  to  cook  .      i  know  how  to  cook  .  ❞        he  just  didn’t  teach  him  how  to  be  competent  when  it  counted  ,    apparently  .      any  other  time  ,    and  he’s  never  almost  burnt  a  kitchen  down  trying  to  make  anything  for  himself  .      this  would  be  a  first  .      LUCKY  HIM  ,    TO  HAVE  CADE  HERE  TO  WITNESS  IT  :      SHE’S  NEVER  GOING  TO  LET  THIS  ONE  GO  .      maybe  he  deserves  it  .      he’s  more  inclined  to  think  he  doesn’t  .        ❝  i  mostly  cook  when  i’m  outdoors  .      not  in  a  kitchen  .      when  i  was  little  ,    yeah  .  ❞        he  counts  staying  in  a  place  with  an  actual  kitchen  as  pure  luck  anymore  .

 fine  .      he’s  getting  fast  food  for  them  both  .      he  perches  on  the  edge  of  the  table  ,    keeping  his  weight  on  his  leg  so  there’s  no  chance  of  it  breaking  under  him  ,    and  scrolls  through  his  phone  .        ❝  yeah  ,    just  so  you  know  ,    we’re  not  eating  in  the  kitchen  .  ❞

 sometimes  ,    even  arthur  doesn’t  know  how  he’s  managed  to  survive  this  long  .      THERE  ARE  PLENTY  OF  ISSUES  HE’S  RUN  INTO  .      BIG  ISSUES  .      LIFE-THREATENING  ,    WHEN  IT  COMES  TO  THE  BIG  BAD  BOYS  :      and  those  don’t  even  come  close  to  comparing  to  the  numerous  idiotic  tendencies  he  carries  around  up  here  on  land  .      he’s  lucky  he’s  only  got  an  eyeful  from  cade  ,    and  not  her  turning  away  from  him  and  refusing  to  sign  to  him  for  however  long  that  could  be  .

 ❝  we’re  gonna  have  to  .  ❞        the  smell  of  burnt  food  is  terrible  ,    arthur  decides  .      the  smell  of  burnt  food  on  top  of  burnt  metal  is  even  worse  .      he  has  to  hold  his  breath  just  to  make  sure  he  doesn’t  gag  at  it  .      coughing  once  ,    he  makes  his  way  past  her  to  grab  his  phone  .        ❝  what  do  you  want  ?      healthy  or  fast  food  ?  ❞
