A clothing brand launched in 1989, Cross Colours reached international success by appealling to a younger generation of consumers through social and political messages, bright colours and African Kente Cloth Patterns. With a market initially targeted to young black men, high sales took it from the underground to mainstream, selling in malls worldwide and worn by men, women, and youth alike. âIn addition to uplifting slogansââStop the Violence,â âPeace N the Hood,â âEducate 2 Elevate,â âLove Sees No Colorââthey got a boost from celebrities who wore their threads. Filmmaker John Singleton, musician George Clinton, rapper Big Daddy Kane, actor Will Smith, talk show hosts Oprah Winfrey and Arsenio Hall, and others helped expand the appeal of the line without large-scale advertising expendituresâŚâ Throughout the 1990âs Cross Colours took urban clothing to the masses and opened doors for an emergence of young black designers. Their parent company, Threads 4 Life which Jones co-founded later began marketing the popular Karl Kani jeans line.
Coming off their business success, they founded Cross Colours Common Ground Foundation, an organization designed to help reduce gang violence; and with portions of the company profits also going to CCCGF.
