Send "Little thing" and my character will tell you something as a child.
❝ I just wish that bastard wouldn't lie to me. ❞ a 13 year old Perry grumbles to himself, teeth gritted as he attempts to swallow down all the hurt swirling so heavily in his chest that it makes his voice shudder with uncertainty every few syllables. ❝ Just don't fucking come to my games if you don't wanna see me play! Stop pretending you're gonna try when you don't give a shit. ❞
He growls and buries his face in his hands, digging his nails into the skin. The physical pain doesn't help ground him any. In fact it only exacerbates his feelings. He rips his hands away from his face and just exclaims through his teeth to the empty space in front of him, waving his hands wildly in lieu of nothing else to do with them, ❝ I'm so TIRED of this shit. I don't even CARE anymore. I dooon't fuuucking caaare! ❞
He kicks the edge of his bed hard in frustration; the frame of the bed hits the bedside wall with a thunk and Perry immediately freezes up as the sound jolts him back down to reality. Wide blue eyes shift towards his bedroom door like a deer in headlights. Shit.
Almost immediately a low male voice resounds in an accusatory tone from the other room, ❝ Perry. What the hell are you doing in there? ❞
Fuck. He swallows thickly and clenches his fists at his sides, takes a deep breath to steel himself before tentatively calling back though his still closed bedroom door, ❝ Nothing. I dropped a textbook. ❞
He hears an incredulous scoff followed by, ❝ Why am I not surprised! It's not like the education your mother and I pay for matters as much to you as chasing a ball around like a goddamned dog. ❞
Perry clenches his jaw so hard he can feel the nerves in his temple ticking in discomfort, wills himself not to tear up. He's not gonna fucking cry about being scolded for the thousandth time. It's fine. He'll just work twice as hard at his school work as he already does and then his dad won't get any ideas about taking sports away from him.
When Perry takes too long to respond his father goes on, ❝ Really? You got nothing to say to that? You don't give a damn about anyone but yourself, Perry. To hell with what your mom and I go through to put you kids through school, and you're out here wasting all your efforts on a fuckin' hobby 'cause you'll never have the real talent for the big leagues. ❞
Perry still can't muster a rebuttal of any kind. He's exhausted, physically from the game earlier, emotionally from being one of the only members of the team whose dad isn't super enthusiastic and encouraging about his son playing sports. What is Perry doing so differently from his peers that his dad can't just appreciate that he enjoys playing basketball? He doesn't care whether or not he's the best player on the team, though he is damn well aiming to be! He just wants a break from being in his head all the time and basketball gives him that. But at this rate it's looking like he might have to consider giving it up just to keep the peace in the house. After all, his father isn't even wasted yet; Perry will probably get an even harsher ‘And Another Thing’ lecture once the alcohol kicks in.
