i created a combination of elements from my collages to create an overal feel for my proposal. i made the collages trying to capture a moment from the proposal but this piece is a summary of what i want to create.

this exercise i did a while back (but forgot it upload it here eek). i closed my eyes and drew how i imaged  some elements of my building.

1. entrance

a big element that i imagined to be the first thing to see is a large centre piece of nature; a tree. the view became the view from the first floor looking at the tree and also some of the outside. i intended here to remove the adjoining building and to also create a large triple heighted open space. with maybe stairs wrapping around the tree somehow.

2.restaurant

a view from the windows of how the restaurant may look. i closed my eyes and this is what i came up with. plants everywhere and hanging from the ceiling, mismatched upcycled furniture decorated with herbs and spices ready on the table to be used.

this was an event that i joined which was touched on topics of nature in cities. it covered topics of why we should and how to implement small elements such as bug hotels and  greenery, the positive effects these have on human health as well as the environment. this was very interesting to see as it is so simple and effective, yet not common from what i have seen. the effects of nature are so powerful yet we are so consumed with the ideas of hiding its beauty and cementing on top of it. the conference also showed projects currently in progress, lightly covering the cost of implementing these small changes and there impact.

as i was explaining my idea to the architect, he recommended some precedents to me that really perfectly captured what i was visualising.

(medical/counselling/hospice)

a simple brief with complex needs: a practical, anti-institutional, undaunting facility which would raise the spirits, yet situated in hospital grounds.

i really loved the idea of having a large tree i my building but i wasn’t sure how it would be possible. i was thinking about having an exposed ground but also struggled to see how that would practically work. this element of this building was perfect for me. the architects here decided to raise the floor of the building and leave an element of nature exposed which i love and definitely fits well in my brief.

battersea power station‘s roof garden by fosters

the tree-lined garden will command views of the power station, the thames, and the city beyond. it will also feature a yoga lawn, barbecue spots, fitness areas, vegetable patch, plus areas for cinema screenings.

i found this session very beneficial to me. i began by presenting my idea and a few question that i had about to think about.

i started by creating a quick base model of the site in cardboard to then add shapes and forms that would help me create some ideas and forms for my proposal.

so ive now started to examine the current site more. I wanted to have in a less clustered context so its easier for me to visualise.

i found this meeting wonderful. i gained knowledge through hearing other people in the industry and what they had been thinking about our current enviromental crisis.

what i took out of it:

-understanding tactile material knowledge; once we understand how we are building and our processes we can then narrow down what exactly needs to change. visiting building sites and learning to build with materials help us gain knowledge on what to do and avoid

-learning from the global south; in the west we tend to look down on the south and rely on new technologies to produce new solutions but what if the same problems have been solved elsewhere? looking to other countries that dont produce the waste we do in the west can help expand our own methods.

-being uncomfortable: as a culture we can accumulated an obsession with overconsumption and this thought may make someone uncomfortable. by looking around our own spaces we can examine out own habits that need changing that will impact the bigger picture. being uncomfortable with our own habits can help us then educate ourselves on how we can solve them.
