Foolish girl. So foolish. She never should have gone on this mission alone; never should have insisted she would be fine, to think herself savvy and skilled enough to do it. Now, a piece of intel sits in her mind like a withered flower, half forgotten, dead before it reaches the intended recipient. But that’s not the only — or even most important — kernel of knowledge that can be excavated from her mind.

Blame her bookish upbringing: the captain has read too many stories to realize the painful truth that no one writes in lore, in tale. It’s lonely to die a hero. All of her shining, valiant tenacity has been muddied, battle worn armor, a tattered banner in the wind. There was no one to save her now. There was no distant hope or salvation. there had been a time when desi felt more neutral about the fight happening across the stars. his father had wanted him to serve the new republic and, he had, for a time. problem was, it'd been for all the wrong reasons. desiderius didn't like the violence. he didn't like how good he was with a blaster in his hands. so, he used the skills he'd learned and dipped under the radar. nathaniel was reborn as desiderius; a man who thrived on the currency of information. considering all the political transitions and the imperial warlords in the outer rim, it was the perfect time for a foothold in espionage.

inevitably, that brought the first order to his door. all the safeguards in the world couldn't prevent one from getting a hold of him if they really wanted to. as it turned out, desiderius was a little too good at his job.

in the beginning, there'd been a level of guilt in talking to kylo ren. desi had to keep reminding himself that business was business and it certainly wasn't like he was handing rebels on a platter to the empire. those days were long gone.

they'd been tangled together in the sheets when desi quietly left the bed at the sound of a communications chirp. the broker was still half asleep when he'd re-entered the room, only to be woken up by being slammed into a nearby wall. flight activated, desi tripped over his own foot trying to scramble away. invisible fingers curl around his throat. slowly, inch by inch, he's lifted off the ground and flung against another wall. he hadn't been able to hear whatever kylo mentioned about his anger. with his heart stuck pulsating in his throat, it was difficult to begin to even think about what set his lover off.

     she sighs, ignoring the part of her that's as pleased with him as ever. "we talked about this."

they have. at LENGTH. "you can't solve all our problems with murder." evidently it's a lesson that bears repeating.

but things were different, now, that she was around. they had to be, now that the war had ended and the galaxy was slowly unifying itself again. arriving at a place of common ground was proving to be more CHALLENGING than rey had originally anticipated.

yet she can't help but to reflect upon all the things she's done in her life in pursuit of survival. so many unfair choices had been made, so many decision she hadn't wanted to be burdened with but was, beyond her control.

was it so bad that someone else wanted to lighten that load? his methods were IMPERFECT, but she wondered if there was something wrong with her for finding the sentiment behind them... thoughtful.

"you could at least consult me next time," she reminds again. they've talked about that, too. "that's what i'm here for -- to think through ALTERNATIVE solutions."
