Rotary Meeting Notes

We started the meeting discussing what we have coming up. The gifts for the Triple G are coming in. Allyson is going to go over the ones that have just come in and will let us know next week what is missing. This Friday is the Fall Festival. We passed around the sign up sheet for our booth. If you haven’t signed up, please do. We not only need the help, but could use a great turn out! Remember to wear your blue work shirt! Please remember to get your service hours to Holly.

Our speaker today was Nancy Lambert with Kindred Spirits Therapy Minis. She brought in Picasso to help show us what they do. She pointed out how her minis have helped people with Alzheimer’s have a lucid moment, veterans with PTSD have lifted spirits, and help enhance motor skills for every age. They currently have 27 facilities that they coordinate with regularly. They are fully self-funded, but are in current need of a new vehicle. The trailer that they have is too large. They are in need of a cargo van, as opposed to their trailer. If any of our members, or businesses that they know, would like to donate please contact Nancy at (850) 830-4199. Don’t forget the Fall Festival on Saturday!!

Today was PINK DAY! We had a good turn out of pink from the members at the meeting today.

Narissa Jenkins was inducted into the club today. She is the third new member to our club.

J. B. Whitten was our speaker. He spoke about the City Government Week.

Monday the 23rd is a City Open House (immediately after Council Workshop until 9pm).

Tuesday the 24th is Coffee with Elected Officials @ Casbah Coffee (starting at 8:30am).

Wednesday the 25th is Kids Smokehouse Demo by Fire Dept. @ Fire station (9-11am)

Thursday the 26th is Councilman Whitten’s Town Hall Meeting @ Samuel’s Roadhouse (6-8pm).

Friday the 27th is Elected Officials Serve the People @ Hub City Smokehouse (5:30-7pm).

5-0 vote to ban medical marijuana within the city limits. Chick-fil-a is still moving into Ryan’s. The bowling alley is closing and being turned into a church. Unknown what is happening with Helenback. A new CRA Director has been hired to see what can be done to help grow our city.

Tomorrow is our first cooking class! They are at First Baptist Church in Holt from 10-12. We could use the helpers.

23OCT at 6pm Rotary is going to be recognized by the Okaloosa School Board for our work with the schools in the county. We could use a great turn out for this event!

Today we inducted Tim into the club.

Due to not having a speaker today, Jacob Willey showed us some technology. He showed the club a trailer for the movie ‘I Am Jane Doe’, which is about human trafficking and slavery. He also discussed our website, what would work best for our members to gain information.

We had an open discussion about social media, the website, and how our club is looking to others.

Holly held a meeting for the Fall Festival after the regular meeting.

Homecoming parade is this weekend. An email will be sent out as to where to meet and what time. Remember to wear your blue shirt!

Fall Festival committee is having a meeting next week after our usual meeting. If anyone would like to volunteer, please let Holly know. A sign up sheet will be at next weeks meeting. Also need to get the sign up sheets for the hay bale contest out. Spread the word.

Neil came back with souvenirs from our sister city Rotary.

Elections are coming up. End of October is when the elections committee will be formed. Please be thinking about who you would like to nominate or if you would like to place your own name in.

Dr. George vonHilsheimerwas our speaker today. He is a dermatologist who spoke about sun damage and skin cancer. He was a helicopter pilot in the Army before becoming a dermatologist.

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in humans, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Ultraviolet radiation from the sun's rays or tanning beds causes damage to the genetic material in skin cells. Over time, the damaged DNA causes errors when skin cells reproduce. This leads to the formation of pre-skin cancer and cancer growths.

Actinic keratoses are sun damage spots that have early characteristics of skin cancers. They usually appear as crusty umps in the most sun exposed areas, such as the hands, face, and scalp. These are usually taken care of with non-surgical treatments, but if left untreated, some will turn into skin cancer.

Basal cell skin cancers are the most common types if skin cancers, but also the least dangerous. They usually begin as an enlarging bump.

Squamous cell skin cancers are less common than basal cell skin cancers, but more dangerous. They may also begin as an enlarging bump in sun-exposed area. These types can cause bleeding, nerve damage.

Melanoma skin cancers are not as common as basal cell or squamous cell skin cancers, but they are more dangerous. They may begin in an existing mole or develop as a new spot. They are usually pigmentated (dark). Most common locations are the back and leg.

Use sunscreen (SPF 30), hats with visors and protective clothing when outside. Stay away from tanning beds, limit exposure times, and avoid burns! Get regular skin checks from a dermatologist. Learn the danger signs of skin cancer. Prevention, early detection and treatment are your best defenses against skin cancers.

Most skin cancers can be treated with minor surgery or superficial radiation (SRT) in the doctor's office. The earlier a skin cancer is detected, the easier it is to treat. More advanced skin cancers may require larger surgeries and/or other types of treatments.
