enough with the project Hail Mary meat grinder. I think we should stick Ryland and Colt in the Fall Guy torment nexus. Let’s get these boys framed for murder and blown up in front of the Sydney Opera House. The identical twin thing would make it so so so funny like which one did it anyway
The idea that two completely separate individuals, from different planets, with a language barrier and a temperature barrier and a thousand other barriers spanning time and space, still manage to become deeply loving, completely empathetic, entirely selfless friends? It makes my heart feel like it completely dropped out of my chest. in a good way.
The deep grief of being a student of Ryland Grace and learning that he has gone on the mission. You are excited because he said the best minds were on it and, well, he's the smartest guy you know! And then you hear that he's not coming back in time for the school year. Or the next. Or the next. Or, well, at all.
Everyone finds out differently. Some are religiously reading everything about the mission and go still in the darkness of their beds, phone glowing in front of their face. Some of them get sat down gently by their parents, maybe even with a counselor or therapist, to explain what's happening. Still more feel like a bolt of lightning has hit them when their friends whisper the news in class.
Undeniably -- and many of them try -- the fact that haunts them is that he went up for them. For their future. For everybody's future, some manage to rationalize, but those who think too hard cannot ignore it. Not for any faceless group of children -- their names and faces and laughs and questions must have been on his mind when he said yes.
It becomes a solid weight between them all. Ex students of his feel it too. If you know someone used to know and love Dr. Ryland Grace, you drop everything to help them when they fall, even if it's just a silent hand. The older students in particular latch onto the class he disappeared on, becoming fiercely protective. New kinship is formed. When they're old enough (even 16, if their parents relent), many of them get tattoos to remember him, even as they're covered up by the increasing layers they need to go outside. A beanie ball of the Earth. Laika the dog. His glasses. The date he left. Sometimes, just a red Petrova Line.
The first year that ex students of his graduate high school, he's mentioned in the Valedictorian's speech. She wasn't even a student of his, but she's grateful that he saved her best friend's life with his care and compassion. She says she hopes that his dreams are sweet. Ryland Grace hasn't even woken up yet.
When his class graduates, there's a seat saved for him in the teacher's row. The principal, throat thick, says that Dr. Grace would be proud of all of them. People leave flowers on the seat and his students get a special tassel.
Babies start being named after him, this time by people who actually knew him. Grief doesn't fade, but the space it occupies gets smaller, turns into an extra jolt of pain when they look up at the darkening sun and know that someone very smart is up there, trying to fix it.
On his "wake-up" day, a bunch of them get together again. They forget old grievances and brush past the awkwardness that time has grown. They show how their tattoos look now. They tell stories and try to guess what alarm clock music he would pick. They try to think of how he'd react to their lives. Many of them are teachers now. One of them has a framed selfie of them on their desk. They laugh about how embarassed he'd pretend to be while being deeply touched.
Eventually, eventually, they see his face again. It's so odd -- they have grown and loved and lost and yet he looks exactly the same. Wears the same shirts. When the government brings those who want to come to a naval base to show them exclusive footage, he teaches the same way, too. They all get a hard and digital copy of the special message he left for them. It confirms what they've known all these years -- that he is happy to serve for the future that they've been having, that their kids and grandkids will have, that he hopes has been treating them well. Listening to all of his adventures, all that he has gained and done for them, it doesn't feel like blame anymore.
(Edit 1: will probably write a fic about this stuff! Feel free to leave inspo! Will be posted on tumblr @jayistootiredforthis if I do so go there!)
(Edit 2: 100% making a fic. Feel free to continue extrapolating and making your own thoughts!! Remember it will NOT be on this account, though I'll probably reblog it here. Should I do a taglist?)
(Edit 3: Chapter one of the fic is up on tumblr and ao3!)
The effort put into Rocky’s voice astounds me. When Grace lets it slip that he’s not going to go home, Rocky is so upset he forgets to clarify “why didn’t you tell me” is a question, which is abundantly familiar for people speaking a second language when emotions run high.
When the translator is working, you can still hear the musical tones of his natural voice in the background (a detail a lot of franchises have missed, I’ve noticed.) In the scene where Grace is pinned to the control panel and the translator doesn’t work anymore, you can clearly hear Rocky saying his name in a higher octave, panicked.
This movie ruined my life I want to own it on DVD immediately

Listen… from one scientist to other scientists… you’ve either blown up a nitrile glove like Ryland Grace or you’re lying.
I'm re-listening to Project Hail Mary, and I cannot get that tumblr post out of my head where its talking about the whole thing from Rocky's point of view. You know the one, it's like 'you go into space with your most advanced tech, spend 50 years alone, and then one day a dog in a trashcan shows up. It can't do 2+2 but it knows how the universe started'
Like, this mindset makes everything that happens in the story absolutely hilarious, in particular the whole first interactions bit.
From Rocky's point of view he sent a simple model of the local star systems to indicate where he was from hoping these new creatures would indicate where they were from. He put it in a protective cylinder and sent it over to the ship. Something enormous climbs out of a hole in the side of their ship... Wait, did one of the creature go OUTSIDE its ship in a a god damn plastic bag just to catch it??? I better aim it at where it came out of so it doesn't do that again. Then when the cylinder gets back, the creatures have indicated where they're from by attaching a lollypop stick with chewinggum to the model... which has mostly fallen off in the heat. Also they put distilled fire in the cylinder???
The creature then climbs outside its ship, again, chiseles a lump off its ship with a hammer and throws it at you so it can send you a sample so you can join to it and... its made of thin sheets of soft lead???
Then on finally talking to this large creature you realise it's incredibly delicate like a jellyfish, so god damn stupid, has essentially no memory, and cant do basic maths. And you're supposed to be saving your entire civilisation with this squishy idiot. But then a while later it turns around and explains relativistic time dilation and background radiation like its something you should have figured out already.
Ive heard multiple people describing Rocky seeing Grace like the equivalent of a dog, but he's really more like a three and a half year old blind jellyfish. Its living in a frozen semi-vacuum of highly explosive gas, can't remember anything, needs to nap constantly or it becomes noticeably more stupid, and it's here to save the world.
Its just such a delightful addition to hold in the back of your mind when reading the book.
I didn't realize that this was about Project Hail Mary at first I just accepted that this was Ryan Gosling's fault and we have to kill him
Grace and Rocky are living in like this whimsical space adventure. Meanwhile, back on Earth, Eva Stratt just ordered her fifth assassination this week trying to stop WW3. The other day she replaced Jeff Bezos with a homonculus clone grown in a lab so she can repurpose Amazon into a humanitarian aid distribution network. She had a team of lawyers trick a demon into extending her lifespan by 30 years just so she can live to see through Project Hail Mary.

my friend wanted me to make this
Rocky: we built our spaceship by unifying every mind on the planet to create a super hive mind, pooling out collective knowledge and problem solving skills to come up with a plan.
Grace: we gave the scariest woman I've ever met two coffees every morning, an unlimited budget, and enough legal immunity to cuss out any world leaders she wanted to and boy did she want to.
Happy Mother's Day to these two
me, after watching only the phm movie and just barely starting the book: eva stratt did w h a t
Eva Stratt does NOT need a redemption arc. Eva Stratt did EVERYTHING WRONG so that no-one else would have to. Her hands are permanently stained with blood so humanity gets to keep on living.

rocky's crew dying from radiation exposure, something humans go to great lengths to prevent and are very scared of and ryland's crew dying in their "sleep" with nobody watching, something eridians go to great lengths to prevent and are very scared of. cool book that is easy to read through your tears.
I was so scared they were heading for a romance subplot but congrats to Project Hail Mary for going for the far funnier option of 'Trolley Operator' and 'Guy She Is Actively Tying To The Tracks'. What a dynamic. Movie of the year.
