my greatest accomplishment in life is that I inadvertently made my friend break up with her shitty boyfriend by throwing her a really fucking awesome birthday party
okay so I fucking love event planning and decorating and hosting and baking, aka all the elements of a banger birthday party. I am so freaking happy to throw people parties because it means I get to throw a party, then go to a party! yippee!
so my friend's birthday rolled around and I knew she wanted a party because I'd done them for her before, but I wanted to make it extra special because she was turning the big 25. so I did all the regular stuff I am So Excited About: had her roommates let me into her apartment while she was out, put up balloons and homemade garlands and streamers and table decor, made her favorite cake and snack plates and cocktails, ordered catering from a restaurant she loves, got a bunch of our friends to come over to surprise her, wrote her a disgustingly heartfelt card, etc. and then because it was the big quarter century, I was like I gotta do something extra.
now. I do not like clowns. my friend loves clowns. we've gone to the circus together and she's seen me literally close my eyes and hide when the clowns are out in the audience, meanwhile she's screaming and waving at them. so obviously I hired a clown for her birthday. (btw seeing him out of clown costume made me less freaked out because now I knew that the guy under there looks like someone's uncle.)
so she showed up after work totally expecting a party because I'm too paranoid to throw a real surprise party, and obviously loved it. and then I was like btw. there's a clown.
she lost her mind. she was sooo excited. she loved the party and she loved the clown. I was like haha yes I'm getting a good grade in birthday parties and didn't think much of it because frankly I do this a lot, and it's so much fun for me that I don't consider it work. like, I love doing all that for my friends. it's not any kind of sacrifice.
two days later, she texted me that she broke up with her boyfriend.
naturally I was like omg tell me everything I hated that guy let's get coffee. so we did and she told me that for her birthday, her boyfriend of nine months 1) forgot about it and didn't get her anything, 2) got mad at her for not texting him while she was at her party, 3) got mad at her for telling him about the party because it was "passive aggressive", and 4) called her immature and stupid for being excited about a clown at her birthday.
this was all very in character for him. but she'd just come from a lovely birthday party full of her friends who love her and want to put effort into making a nice day for her, where her friend who hates clowns hired a clown just to make her happy even though the party alone would've been plenty. and suddenly this wasn't a boyfriend being kinda forgetful and lazy, it was a glaring incongruity with everyone else in her life. so she finally dumped his ass. and I was soooo freaking happy. so clowns can be good.
I keep seeing posts from people who claim they will be blocking anyone who posts any content from the new Harry Potter show that begins airing in December.
So I wanted to say you’re all being ridiculous. You consume media all the time by actual rapists. You watch movies with actors who have killed people. You read books written by racists and homophobes. All. The. Time. And it is so unimportant to you that half the time, you don’t even know.
This business with JK Rowling is a witch hunt. She follows a different kind of feminism than you do. And sometimes she’s a little rude about it. (But we don’t tone police here.) She has never put hands on anyone. She has started charities with her own money. And she is an outspoken advocate for women experiencing domestic violence.
She has expressed acceptance for LGBT people, yes including trans people. She just does not believe a person can genuinely change their sex, that some ‘inclusive’ terminology dehumanizes women and that sex segregated spaces are necessary to protect women.
There is a reason that JKR is being derided the way she is, and it’s not because she’s the worst person in the world. And if you step back, if you read her words, you’ll see why.
Anyway, keep putting Harry Potter content on my feed.
Nicholas Brendon, the actor who played Xander in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, died recently. The response was an outpouring of love: fans affectionately calling him “Nicky”, his former costars putting out loving statements about him, fans sharing stories about meeting him, so many Xander scenes and quotes from BtVS being posted. Fans called for mass streaming of “The Zeppo”, a Xander-centric episode. Nevermind that the creator, Joss Whedon, was/is abusive too.
You’d never know that Brendon had physically abused women.
In fact, when a handful of women pointed this side of him out and cautioned people about pouring love out for an abuser…they’d be told that it’s a complicated situation, that he was a complex person, that it’s okay to mourn the person he once was and just put aside that pesky woman-beating side of him. After all, the poor sweet man was troubled.
Watching this all unfold really put into perspective for me how little people care about women, especially compared to how much they care about worshipping men no matter what they’ve done. You can’t even mention Harry Potter or god forbid JK Rowling without people jumping on you to lecture you about how she’s evil and unredeemable and needs to die. I’ve even seen people call for boycotts of brands just because they did a HP collab. Yet you can post a loving tribute to “Nicky” and people will join in supportively, never once mentioning that he abused women. You can separate the art from the male artist, but don’t you dare suggest doing the same for a woman.

Heated Ravelry: forbidden romance between two competitive knitters
i love lowland streaked tenrecs because they’re like if a mammal was a caterpillar
look at this thing. the animal
Wow. Wikipedia image not any less mammal that is caterpillar.
Here’s another neat insect-like thing about this species; they’re one of if not the only mammal to use stridulation as a threat response/communication. Stridulation is what we call it when an animal rubs or vibrates body parts together to make sound, like a cricket does with its legs. Cicadas also produce their iconic sound by stridulation!
Lowland streaked tenrecs have quills on their back that when vibrated together make a high frequency sound that is used to communicate with one another and to produce a threat display. They have specialized muscles beneath each quill that allows them to vibrate them at will. I believe the sound is too high for humans to hear.
Stridulation is common in insects but pretty rare in vertebrates. Other than the lowland streaked tenrec as our mammal representative there are a handful of snakes that stridulate by rubbing their scales together and a bird called the club-winged manakin that makes an incredible sound by vibrating specialized feathers.
Not pertinent to anything in particular but I do think it's kinda weird that we keep depicting cavemen in media crawling around on all fours covered in dirt with tangled, matted hair, speaking in broken, cobbled-together toddler language when like.
They were us.
Like literally genetically they were US, just like. A while ago.
Like
Would you trust a TV caveman with a baby? Probably not
A real life caveman though??? I think they'd be at least okay at it
This is actually really important and comes up in Anthropology classes all. The. Time.
As long as homo sapiens have existed, we have had the same emotional and mental capacity as you and I do today. You nailed it. They were US. Even Neaderthals existed alongside and had offspring with Homo Sapiens for many thousands of years.
There's much evidence that cavemen would have had complex spoken language, culture (learned information passed down), symbolic interpretation, and I think they most certainly would have been able to handle holding a baby. In fact I have my suspicisions that an ancient homo sapiens mother may be a more present, attentive, and knowledgable mom than I could be today.
Do not let media trick you into believing we are the pinnacle of humanity. Unilinial evolution theory (google it quick I beg) is BUNK, GARBAGE, and the root of so much evil.
We've been human for a long, long time, and we are not inherently better than all those who came before.
One the most profound experiences of my life was visiting Font de Gaume, which has 12 thousand year old paintings. They use a technique where the horses appeared to run across the wall when seen in flickering firelight. There was a bison the wall staring at us with such attitude, I could practically hear him. I had the most profound feeling of those ancient artists reaching forward to lay their hands on my shoulders. To say, "This was my world." It was a profoundly moving experience.
Some years later, I went to the Orkney islands where we visited a tiny family run museum of artifacts from the chambered tomb at the other end of the farm. They handed me a pestle once held by some neolithci human. They'd worn groves where the thumb and forefinger would be for better grip.
One time, in a French history class, my teacher randomly at the end of the class had all of us draw a sketch of a horse. And we were all like ??? Okay???
At the beginning of the next class, my teacher showed us a cave painting of a horse. And then he showed all of our horses, which he had scanned and put into the presentation.
He then pointed out all the ways that our horses looked similar to the prehistoric horse. Same features, drawn from the same angle, etc.
And then he asked us, "Isn't it cool that you draw horses the same way as someone who lived 20,000 years ago?"
Yeah. That stuck with me for a while.
In Spain, there's a cave full of ancient, ice age era drawings of bison and reindeer and other animals of that period... And one small section of chaotic scribbles just a little away from everything else. These scribblesv were so incomprehensible, they were originally just called the 'Panel of Enigmatic Signs'... Until it occurred to someone that drawings only three feet off the ground probably weren't made by adults.
Scientists are now pretty sure the scribbles were made by kids ages 3-6, more or less on their own. The adult cave artists were probably doing what any modern parent might do when they want to keep small children out of their hair for awhile: they gave the kids some drawing tools of their own and a small section of wall to work on, out of the way but still close enough to keep an eye on them, and let them have at it.
What's most charming about the whole thing is the way the cave scribbles look exactly like what you'd find on the wall of a preschool today. Artistic styles vary widely across different times and cultures, but child development is as near to a universal human experience as it gets.
Wisher made detailed 3D scans of the drawings, which helped her understand the uneven pressure applied to the charcoal and the direction the lines were drawn. The team then compared the panel’s composition with age-appropriate artistic efforts by modern children. Kids across cultures go through the same developmental stages, which influence their physical ability to draw, until about the age of 6, Amir notes.
The team compared the ancient art with the developmental stages exhibited by modern children: the furiously scribbled circles and push-pull lines typical of 3-year-olds just learning to control their bodies, for example, or the wobbly, right-angled figures of slightly older kids beginning to master fine motor skills.
Both are apparent in the cave, superimposed on each other as though two or more kids were drawing at once. That’s a clue the Las Monedas marks were likely made by “siblings or a mixed-age play group within the sphere of safety around adults, but also within their own space,” says co-author Felix Riede, an Aarhus archaeologist.
...
Adults at Las Monedas would have been aware of what the kids were doing and presumably had lit fires or torches; without ample firelight the cave is pitch black.

there is just no reason that’ll excuse surrogacy to me. sorry. “but what about same-sex” “what about infertility!!” adopt. “oh but i want it to have my genes” too bad. we don’t all get what we want. i’m sure those kids in the adoption service want fucking parents, too, but it’s a tough life, innit?
btw i’m not saying you have to adopt. i’m not against surrogacy because i’m pro-adoption. i’m against surrogacy because women aren’t fucking incubators which you can buy, and if you want to be a parent, children aren’t something you pick and choose according to your narcissistic desires. get over urself and stop thinking ur genes are so fucking perfect that you need a “mini-me”. if u want kids ur gonna have to grow the fuck up and develop some empathy for the rest of human kind outside urself and ur partner.
Men refuse to understand what SA actually is and looks like because then they’d have to admit they’ve SAed someone before
men think 'grey area stuff' like coercion isn't sexual assault because most of them have done it or known someone who has.
Coercion is sexual assault. Guilting her into sex is coercion. Wearing her down until she says yes is coercion. Sex in exchange for something is coercion.
Plenty of women want to ignore they "grey area" stuff too because otherwise they'd have to admit something disrespectful happened to them.
