You don’t need to be lean when you’ve got this much mean, and for 2014 the Fat Bob appears more assertive than ever thanks to a Dark Custom make-over from Harley Styling that turns this bike into a back-alley bully. “We wanted to take the Fat Bob further into the Dark Custom realm” says Harley-Davidson Styling Manager Tony Pink. “The compact, chopped lines of the new rear fender, the angle of the shocks, and the slanting tank graphics all line up to create an aggressive new stance that’s reinforced by the new blunt-cut mufflers. Upgraded Brake Components Improve Stopping Power and Feel

OXFORD (August 19, 2013) – The confidence-inspiring control offered by ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) is now available on all 2014 Harley-Davidson Sportster® model motorcycles, excluding Iron 883™. The eight model Sportster line also features updated hand controls and brake components, improved service access, and a standard H-D® Smart Security System and new keyless ignition with a proximity-based, hands-free security fob.

Since its introduction in 1957, the Harley-Davidson Sportster motorcycle has combined nimble handling and distinctive style in perfect tune with the charismatic beat of an American V-Twin engine. The Sportster evolution continues for 2014 with five models that are among the most accessible motorcycles in the Harley-Davidson line. From the Dark Custom™ menace of the Iron 883™ to the easy-handling ride of the SuperLow®; the radical chopper rake of the Seventy-Two™ to the factory custom options of the 1200 Custom Limited, there’s a Harley-Davidson Sportster model to fit the stature, vision and attitude of any rider.

New on Sportster for 2014

Anti-lock Braking System: Standard equipment on all 2014 Sportster models except Iron 883™ on which it is an option. ABS is designed to help the rider maintain control during braking events, especially those that happen in less-than-optimal conditions. The components of the Harley-Davidson ABS have been designed and packaged to be virtually invisible, preserving the uncluttered styling of the area around the wheels. The rider maintains independent control of both front and rear brakes.

New Brakes: The front and rear braking system of all 2014 Sportster models has been redesigned to offer premium performance. Front rotor diameter is increased from 292mm to 300mm. A restyled front-brake caliper features a more-rigid design and dual 34mm pistons that are 36 percent larger than the previous 25mm pistons, for increase braking power. A new high-efficiency aluminium front master cylinder offers reduced friction for improved over-all brake feel. Rear brake rotor diameter is unchanged at 260mm, but the rear caliper is restyled and updated with dual 38mm pistons. Front and rear brakes are fitted with Original Equipment braided stainless steel brake lines that resist expansion and enhance brake feel. The clutch lever mount has been restyled to complement the styling of the brake hand control.

Integrated Electrical System: An all-new electrical system incorporates a new analog speedometer with digital tachometer, restyled ergonomic hand controls, an updated wire harness and voltage regulator, and a new oil tank and side cover design that makes it easier to access and service the battery and diagnostic terminal. The new hand controls include a left-hand Trip switch to toggle through screen displays on the new speedometer, including an odometer, tripmeter and the new gear indicator and RPM display.

H-D® Smart Security System: Available as standard for all Sportster models, the Smart Harley-Davidson Europe Ltd Oxford Business Park, 6000 Garsington Road, Oxford, UK. OX4 2DQ Security System features hands-free operation with a proximity-based security fob and new keyless ignition. When the rider leaves the motorcycle with the fob, the security system is automatically enabled and the ignition is deactivated. When the rider approaches the motorcycle with the fob, the security system is automatically disabled and the motorcycle may be started immediately. New Exhaust Emissions Features: An updated exhaust system features fully-welded header pipes and new heated oxygen sensors linked to a closed-loop emissions circuit, all to improve emissions performance.

New Colours and Graphics: Eleven new colour and two-tone colour combinations, plus new graphics, will be offered on the 2014 Sportster models (not all colour are available on each model).

Three new Hard Candy Custom metal flake colours: Hard Candy Volcanic Orange Flake, Hard Candy Voodoo Purple Flake, Hard Candy Chrome Flake Five new solid colours: Amber Whiskey, Blackened Cayenne, Morocco Gold, Mysterious Red Sunglo, Charcoal Pearl Three new two-tone colour combinations: Mysterious Red Sunglo/ Blackened Cayenne Sunglo, Amber Whiskey/ Brilliant Silver, Charcoal Pearl/ Vivid Black.

More Harley-Davidson motorcycles sold last quarter than a year earlier. The profit and turnover has also increased, as did the U.S. company announced on Thursday. Worldwide, last quarter 90 193 Harleys sold nearly 4,500 more than a year earlier. The company delivered 84,606 new engines to vendors, that was more than 1 percent more than last year. Sales of Harley-Davidson was faced with some $ 60 million to 1.8 billion dollars (1.4 billion euros). The company held a net profit of $ 272 million, against 247 million in the second quarter of last year. Harley-Davidson, which this year celebrates its 110th anniversary, is expected to deliver 259,000 to 264,000 bikes in 2013 to dealers.

Last week I tested the Muscle V-Rod and what a monster it is, but in the good sense of the word. I once tested a V-Rod earlier for my blog. That was when the Harley-Davidson V-Rod Anniversary version in honor of the 10th anniversary of the model. However, this version is a lot thicker, you can clearly see that he has been to the gym. A muscular guy, and he radiates it too. The large brushed exhausts on both sides of the motor reinforce that even further. The sound can be a little louder for me but that’s a matter of taste and standard course mandatory. In terms of riding is in my opinion not much difference. You notice when moving onto the highway that there are 122 thoroughbred horses releases to the 240 rear tire. A wonderful feeling as this seems like everyone and everything to get you going in slow motion. In the category Toys for Boys this bike is absolute number 1.

The weather is good, and despite heavy rain and thunderstorms announced it is nevertheless clear blue and warm. Thanks to Piet Paulusma (Dutch weatherman) I shoot onto the highway and give him quite the tracks (or is it vice versa). My own bike has a lot of power, especially torque, but the V-Rod Muscle does not know when to stop. He just keeps on going and when I lateron stop and step of the bike my arms seem 10 cm longer. The sitpossition is a bit like a drag racer, but is no less comfortable. You can easily ride it longer distances, though I still have to think. Equally well on a motorcycle trip with this model. If you want to ride with a duopassenger then I recommend you to buy a sissybar. The chances are that otherwise leave you with as couple and arrive alone.
