It's been a while. Like most people, I always intend to write more than I actually do, but life often gets in the way and the time to sit down and share a few thoughts with you often gets pushed back.
But today, I couldn't shake this thought. In fact, I woke up thinking about three words... "Let There Be."
Genesis 1:3-4 says "And God said, 'Let there be light,' and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness." (NIV)
I can't tell you how many times I've glazed past that piece of text. The countless times I've spoke on creation and never gave it a second though. Only thinking about the physical act of God separating the light and dark, day and night.
But this morning, since I woke up with those three simple words in my mind and couldn't get the Gungor song out of my head, I decided to look at it again.
Now, I'm sure i'm not the first person to come across this revelation. I'm not a revolutionary person, I always want to be. Although I did come up with the "Day after Thanksgiving Pizza..." But sometimes God may give us thoughts that aren't for the masses, they are for an individual. So I don't know who this is for today (maybe it's just for me) but I hope God speaks to you through this like He spoke to me.
The first thing I get from this scripture is not just the physical implications. Yes, God spoke "Let there be Light" so we could see on earth. Yay for light! Imagine how many more times we would stub our toes had he not done that?
But if we apply this text to our own lives we can gleam just a little more from it. When God entered our lives, He immediately said "Let there be light."
In that moment, He flooded our souls with light... His Light. And it wasn't a suggestion or an option. We can't refuse His light. The very next piece of text says "THERE WAS LIGHT."
So you may choose not to live in the light, but you can't deny the light is there... It's there.
Secondly, God said "It is good." Of course it's Good, Light came from God. The light warms us, allows us to see clearly, provides comfort from fear and chases away the unknown.
The light in our lives is GOOD. God said so Himself. Which leads me to the third application from this text.
"And he separated the light from the darkness..."
We all know and have heard that "Light and Dark don't coexist." Every time I've ever heard that message, I've heard it communicated and had the mental picture of someone "flipping a switch" to God and suddenly light chases away the darkness.
Re-reading this text, I gain a whole new understanding to what I feel God is speaking to me. Darkness did not leave, God separated it. So there is now light AND dark.
Light has been with us the entire time. It has simply been separated from Dark, waiting on us to make the decision to walk in the light.
In student ministry, I find that sometimes it is hard to communicate that there will be hard times in your life. Moments you may find yourself walking through the dark.
For so many people, they feel like they've been walking in the dark so long the light has gone away. But that's not true! God SEPARATED light and dark, but has not deleted either of them.
The light has always been there. And God has called it good, we simply have to walk in the light.
No matter what we've done, no matter where we've been, no matter how useless and lost we feel we are. God has promised us that he isn't going anywhere and He is calling us to the light to live out an amazing life He has planned for us.
So my hope for you today is to walk in the light. Know that God has provided you with GOOD Light in your life. No matter what you've been through, no matter where you think you are, God has provided you with Light. It's always been there and will FOREVER be there for you. You just have to choose to walk in it.
