Hangul 한글 is the writing system used in Korea. It’s made of letters 자모 (ja-mo) that combine into syllable blocks 음절 블록 that represents one spoken syllable.

Hangul 한글 letters 자모 (ja-mo) and digraphs (pair of characters used to make one sound or phoneme) are divided into:

19 total consonants 자음 (ja-eum)

~ 14 consonants 자음 (ja-eum)

ㄱ ㄴ ㄷ ㄹ ㅁ ㅂ ㅅ ㅇ ㅈ ㅊ ㅋ ㅌ ㅍ ㅎ

~ 5 consonants 자음 (ja-eum) are doubled to form 5 tense consonants 쌍자음

ㄲ ㄸ ㅃ ㅆ ㅉ

~ 10 vowels 모음 (mo-eum)

ㅏ ㅑ ㅓ ㅕ ㅗ ㅛ ㅜ ㅠ ㅡ ㅣ

~ 8 are monophthongs 단모음 (single pure vowels)
