Rain joined the group of traveling survivors to be with Sunnyheart.

Rain was perfectly happy being a loner. Sure, things got a little bit lonely sometimes, but... it was simpler. Easier. Less responsibility. And, if Rain really wanted company — which, okay, sure, sometimes he did, on occasion — Rain could find someone to hunt with or whatever. Being a loner didn't mean being completely alone — but, even if it did, Rain would still choose to be a loner.

Until, one day, he met him.

A golden cat with a white chest. Rain wondered if this cat was the sun itself in cat form — the stranger's name, Sunnyheart, confirmed Rain was right.

Sunnyheart invited Rain to hunt with them. Rain quickly learned how bright this golden cat truly was. Then, Sunnyheart asked Rain if he'd like to join them and their group for the night. Rain was hesitant, especially due to how big the group was, but Sunnyheart was just so warm, Rain couldn't resist.

Rain decided to tag along for a day. Two. Three. A quarter moon. A half moon. A full moon. Two. Three. More.

Their love was instant.

Maybe it didn't make sense. Maybe Rain didn't care. Maybe Rain still felt strange being part of such a large group. Maybe he still felt like an outsider. Maybe he always would. But being with Sunnyheart made it all worth it.

... he didn't even get to recover their body.

Sunnyheart died trying to save a young cat, Dewpaw, from a monster.

Rain wasn't sure why he stayed after that. Sunnyheart was his only connection to this group — without them, Rain had no reason to stay.

And yet, he did.

He didn't know why.

The only thing he did know was that he'd never stop grieving his mate's death.

Sunnyheart gave Rainsun a life for love.

Mangrove (it/its), loner in life.

Mangrove was Rain's best friend for years and years. Growing up near one another, Mangrove and Rain practically considered one another to be siblings — due to their closeness and vaguely similar appearances, they were sometimes mistaken as such.

While they were close, their relationship wasn't a constant presence. If one got sick, the other would care for them; they'd hunt for them, bring fresh bedding, and water-soaked moss to drink from. Still, other times, when they were both healthy, one or both of them would go on their own adventures for days on end, sometimes together, sometimes alone. On rare occasions, one of them would even leave for a moon or longer.

Mangrove's death was sudden. When Mangrove and Rain went to sleep that night, everything was fine — then, Mangrove simply didn't wake up the next morning. It was so sudden and unexpected that Rain found it difficult to grieve. He'd find himself turning a corner, expecting to find Mangrove there — only to find himself alone.

Mangrove gave Rainsun a life for integrity.

Froststar (e(y)/xe), FrostClan's first leader.

Frost was always a weird cat — and just because xe was born (mostly) hairless.

In a litter of five other kittens, all of whom were covered in long, thick fur, and born to two parents who also were covered in long, thick fur, Frost was an anomaly. But it was more than just eir appearance — e acted strange, too. But ey was quiet, and clever, and noticed things nobody else did.

Born early leaf-fall, Frost was forced to spend many of xyr early moons stuck inside while xyr littermates got to play outside. Frost's parents tried to include their hairless kit as much as they could, but were woefully unprepared for the task.

Frost didn't mind, though — or, at least, Frost did eir best not to mind. Ey understood and didn't want to waste time being upset. Stuck inside with a lot of time to emself, though, Frost discovered a lot of things; how to weave moss and other bedding supplies to make a better nest; how to paint the walls of the den with berries; how to notice things others overlook; and how to never, ever leave anyone behind.

As Frost and xyr family grew, a group grew around xem. Despite xyr young age, Frost quickly rose into a leadership position, eventually becoming the first leader of what became known as FrostClan.

Thundercall (he/they/spark), TreeClan deputy in life (Lightingstar's former clan). Lightningstar's littermate.

Thundercall and Lightningstar were inseparable since kithood. As kits, then as warrior apprentices, and then finally as full-fledged warriors, Thundercall and Lightningstar always challenged one another to do better — not to be "better" than the other, but because they believed in each other, and in themselves.

Even when Thundercall became TreeClan's deputy, a role both spark and then-Lightningshine dreamed of achieving, the brothers were as close as ever. It was only a couple of seasons into The Great War that Thundercall began to drift away from Lightningshine.

Thundercall grew closer and closer with Puddlestep's group of rebels who opposed the war, believing it had gone too far. Thundercall secretly worked with Puddlestep's group, hoping it would help bring about a peaceful end to the war.

But, as much as Thundercall loved and trusted his brother, he knew Lightningshine was nothing if not loyal. As much as it pained them, Thundercall knew they had to keep the secret from their littermate.

When TreeClan's current — and, ultimately, final — leader found out about Thundercall's treason, the leader killed Thundercall on the spot, denouncing spark as a traitor.

That was the moment Lightningshine began to think, truly think, about the war. If Thundercall, thon's own littermate, couldn't trust thon, how wrong was thon acting?? And if their leader could kill their own deputy, their own clanmate, so cruelly...

... what else did Lightningshine get wrong??

Thundercall gave Lightningstar a life for bravery.

Spruceclaw (he/they), warrior in life. StoneClan cat. Ghostpaw's father.

Spruceclaw is a loyal StoneClan warrior — or, at least, he was, until he began falling in love with an enemy TreeClan warrior, Duskfern.

It wasn't supposed to happen. Spruceclaw was a good, loyal warrior — but sneaking out of his camp, sneaking to the TreeClan border, all to meet with someone who was meant to be an enemy??

It was wrong. It had to be wrong.

But, then again... Spruceclaw been a good warrior this long, right?? Surely, he was still a good warrior... right??

... then, Spruceclaw's mate, Duskfern, confessed he was expecting kits.

He had to leave. They had to leave. So, they left their clans. Still, Spruceclaw and Duskfern couldn't bring themselves to travel far from their former clans.

Duskfern's pregnancy was rough. Kitting wasn't any easier. In the midst of leaf-bare, Duskfern died kitting Inkykit, Juniperkit, and Finchkit. Spruceclaw froze to death trying to keep their family warm. Inkykit and Juniperkit froze to death, too.

Finchkit was found by Puddlestep's group, miraculously alive. At the end of The Great War, just one moon later, Finchkit would change his own name to Ghostkit.

Spruceclaw gave Lightningstar a life for responsibility.

Peachrustle (ve/ver), warrior in life. TreeClan cat (Lightningstar's former clan).

Peachrustle and Lightningstar were never close. Not that they were enemies — far from it — but they were simply clanmates, nothing more, nothing less. And Peachrustle, truthfully, was never anything extraordinary — at least, not in life.

Peachrustle's death during a squabble with FrostClan would ultimately be the first of what became The Great War.
