I am a strong believer in the idea that mentally ill and delusional creatures deserve to exist in alterhuman spaces, and this isn’t just because I fall under this umbrella. Long before I realized I had clinical lycanthropy I was under this idea. I have no clue where some people get off saying that alterhumans who identity who comes from mental illness or delusions are any different then those who’s alterhumanity comes from spirituality. Saying that you don’t want “crazy” alterhumans in your space because you don’t “want to encourage their delusions” is a shitty thing to say. Change that to any other disorder and listen to how weird it sounds. “I don’t want autistic people in this space because I don’t want to encourage their special interests” and if you are going to say “well delusions are harmful special interests aren’t harmful” that is just straight up wrong. Some people’s special interests can be harmful to them, I have been there myself. I have gotten severely anxious and freaked out about my special interests. I know some people may even neglect themselves because they are to interested in their Spin. Delusional alterhumans have been and always will be valid. I don’t care if you think delusions are a bad thing or make someone evil and crazy. You are ableist. Get a hold of yourself and get out of the community until you fix yourself. You don’t need to understand every single identity but you can be kind
Im so tired of the recent uptick in folks being weird and hateful to random identities in the community, mainly things like otherlink and whatnot and I’m trying to not pay it any mind but I just saw a blog claiming no alterhuman was valid unless they identified physically and were transitioning??
Do they realize only a small section of the community are transspecies-? This community has never been about transition in anyway, only some folks will have a transition, even if they identify physically. You are basically trying to change the definition of alterhuman
This is coming from a transspecies animal btw, it’s valid to want to transition and talk to other transspecies folks, but trying to claim that’s the ONLY way to be alterhuman is fucking crazy and just ignores the whole point of the label
Wordless Names
Approximate read time: 7 minutes.
By now I'm sure most of us have noticed the uptick in wolf therians identifying themselves using tracking collar IDs rather than names, alongside a few members of other species doing their equivalent. While tracking collar numbers do not resonate with me (as a werewolf, I would just take it off the next time I changed to human shape if that were to happen to me), they are a part of a general topic that interests me very much - wordless names.
A wordless name is, well, pretty much what it says on the tin. A name which contains no words. This is a concept that I think many alterhumans may find interesting, because it is a way to refer to yourself that is closer to the way that animals likely think of each other in some cases, or may simply be "dehumanizing" in others.
To talk about wordless names, we first have to think about what makes a name in the first place. Most naming conventions dictate that a name should be pronounceable, and be able to be written, usually using the standard alphabet of the name's language origin. However, that is not always the case, even in the human world. Lets look at some examples of human names outside of this framework, before we get into ideas for nonhuman ones.
A name does not have to be pronounceable:
Names spoken in sign language may never be verbally spoken, and yet these are very much names.
Names used online often include emojis and unpronounceable letter combinations, but we still understand them as names.
The Artist Formerly Known as Prince changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol which also cannot be written in the standard alphabet.
A name does not have to be written:
Throughout history, there have been many oral cultures which had no written language, and yet members of these cultures certainly had names.
Even in cultures with written language, for most of history the majority of the population has been illiterate, meaning many people's names were never written, or may have been written with no standardized spelling at all.
If a name does not have to be spoken, pronounced, or written, then we are left with the idea that a name is any signifier that can be used to refer to you specifically. This includes aforementioned radio collar IDs, but it also includes one of my favorite kind of wordless names - tuponyms.
A tuponym is a pattern-name. A name which is formed by patterns unwritten, unpronounceable, and non-linguistic. Tuponyms were first conceptualized by Bluesky user GoopyPanther, in her zine "Tuponyms", which I highly recommend reading. Some examples of a tuponym included in the zine are:
The individual gait of an animal's stride. If you can recognize which of your family members is approaching your door based on the sound of their footsteps, you may already be familiar with this type of name.
The individual frequency emitted by a radio collar.
The pattern of light and color left by a flashing night-walking dog collar.
I myself have thought of a few more, such as the shape of the border of an animal's territory, the pattern of their markings, or the unique shape of their tracks. The possibilities are almost endless.
One unique example of this in the wild that we can confirm is used by animals is the pitch of a wolf's howl. Each individual wolf in a pack howls in a specific pitch which the pack can use to identify them, as well as to harmonize together. This association is so strong, that if a new wolf joins the pack who howls in a pitch that is already taken, they will have to change their howl to an unoccupied one.
Neither of the types of wordless name discussed so far touches on the most common animal name of all. though. This is, of course, scent. It belongs in a category of its own. Each individual creature carries its own unique scent, which not only names who they are, but also communicates how well they are doing, what they have been up to lately, and who they have been hanging out with. Scent is the most common method of naming and knowing in the animal kingdom, and, in some ways, is most similar to human writing. A scent message can be scrawled into the landscape, explicitly intended for use by others, and can also be a passive trace of a presence on the breeze. I will admit that I may be biased here as a canine, but scent speaks in volumes, and because of its powerful tie with memory, I think it makes a wonderfully rich name woven from memories of the creature bearing the scent.
The concept of a "signature scent" is nothing new, and with the rise in popularity of the miscecanis community, the concept of a personal scent is something that gets talked about in the alterhuman community fairly often, but I believe that scent as a name is taking things a step further. The difference between natural scent, like is being used by animals, and artificial scent, like is being chosen in the form of scent products to represent yourself, becomes a bit of a divide here. Though both are useful.
Even without your theriotype's nose, by paying attention to the natural scent of yourself and your loved ones, you can pretty quickly pick up on its identifying features, and even some of the other info I mentioned, like where they may have been, what they have been doing, and even some information about their health. I have gotten pretty good at noticing the changes in my mate's scent when he is having a bad mental health day, vs when he is feeling fine, for example. Much like a written letter from a loved one, natural scent can also be used to comfort you in their absence, cuddling with their blanket becomes a comforting name spoken sweetly.
Chosen scents like cologne and perfume also communicate a lot. Imagine you have no spoken name, and no chance to communicate verbally, yet you are trying to communicate to someone who you are and what you're about. What scents would you chose, and what would you hope that they say about you? This is something of a chosen name. One of the most unique ways that I have heard of chosen scents being used as a naming, was by a kinkster who spoke about how whenever he enters a new dynamic with a sub, he takes them to pick out a "scent collar" which they would wear during all scenes so that the scent of it would instantly put them into the right headspace for their dynamic. Eventually, this scent would be worn at all times as a completely invisible day collar.
All this to say, there are numerous ways that animals communicate identity and recognize each other, which are not traditional names. There are also lots of non-traditional name ways that humans recognize and refer to animals. If you are a wild animal, it may be fun to think about what sort of wordless names others may give you. If you are a predator that protects a certain range of territory, others of your species may name you by the shape of the territory you defend, and the scent hovering at your marking places. At the same time, prey may name you by the pattern your paws leave in the mud, and know to steer clear. If you are a deer, your kin may name you by the impressive antler rubs you leave, while humans might recognize you by the estimated score of your antlers. A bird may be named by the hue of his dazzling feathers by a mate, and by the scratches his dance leaves in the dirt by the snake. An angler fish may be known the the wavelength of light her lure gives off, or the texture of her skin in the dark.
These names are fluid, descriptive, and immediate. They prevent you from easily being spoken about in your absence, a fact suited to the flow state inhabited by most animals. Each moment is faced for exactly what it is, with complete mindfulness. It is an interesting thought experiment, to think about the ways that different modes of language change the very way you think.
What do you think of wordless names? Are there any you identify with? If you would like to make some of your own, here are a few ideas:
The shape of the path you take most often when you walk through your neighborhood
The mixture of your natural scent and the scent left behind by your favorite hobbies (eg, the smell of warm bread if you like baking, dirt and leaves if you hike, salt water if you fish in the sea, etc)
A specific signature scent you chose to represent yourself
The sound + rhythm made by your key-chains or collar tags jangling when you walk
The pattern made by an LED night collar, should you chose to adopt wearing one
The pitch of your howl
Your preferred silhouette in clothing
All of this isn't even getting into the kind of names that could be used by alien species, spirits, or fictional creatures.
I refuse to reblog this post as I do not want to give this being the attention they do not deserve, but I feel the need to speak on this
STOP PUSHING RELIGION ON OTHERS
STOP SAYING IDENTITIES ARE WRONG
STOP TELLING BEINGS WHAT TO DO AND HOW TO BELIEVE
I saw that and it was so difficult to not interact- I managed to control myself and block them, but it made me livid to see. Being nonhuman is a big part of my personal religion (paganism) and seeing someone actively trying to convert others away from their identity and to their religion is fucking crazy and unimaginable to me, I don’t understand how someone could just post shit like this
No one’s identity is wrong, no one’s personal opinion on religion and how the universe works is wrong or right, if it really bothers you so badly to see others doing something you disagree with don’t interact or post in our tags. I fear that’s common sense but here we are I guess

The fox ears I was talking about (though more so mimic wolfdog for me, but the ears came from a fox)
Probably not the best quality and are a tiny bit small but they match my natural fur color quite well and are very comfortable to wear compared to my current other ears so I’ll take it! Will probably be my first choice for ears from now on
I love how I decide to do this instead of the marten ears I’ve been planning to do for months but keep getting distracted lmao, I try to do those next though
note: if this post inspires you to make your own ears out of a pelt please do your research on how to obtain fur ethically especially with fox fur like this
Im super nervous about doing it but I think I’m gonna be making ears out of real fur tonight
I have a fox face pelt that I bought as scrap like two years ago and my original plan with it fell through, so, ears!
I’m gonna be using the rest of the face to make keychains and such for myself and maybe some of my pack mates
hopefully this goes well
Alterhumanity rooted in disablity (zooanthropia, psychosis, delusions, neurodivergence, etc.) deserves to be seen and validated. Shoutout to my disabled aletrhumans ! You're cool and legit.

I'm confused. So basically, some alterhumans say that alterhumans are not physical. But that's obviously not true, because I've met some. So I have a question:
What IS a physical alterhuman?
(Like I know they're physical, but in what way?)
In the most basic definition, it’s literally just being a nonhuman animal physically in some way. That’s it, it’s fairly simple. Just how it’s experienced can be different, but no matter how it’s experienced it’s still a physical identity
For my I feel as if my brain is literately part marten and due to that perceive myself as a marten, for my canine identity I experience it physically due to years of extreme dissociation and being raised by a dog
You don’t really need to know all the thousands of reasons someone might experience their identity on a physical level though, all you gotta know is it is physical to them!

I finally figured it out oh my gods
for awhile I’ve kinda struggled with describing how I’m mainly a marten and a canine in some physical sense, feeling kinda weird about how I’m two species technically. With my other kins I’ve always been able to explain them as a part of my identity picked up as a coping mechanism or kinda just randomly spawning but they are mostly on some other level other then physical
But I think I figured it out
I believe I was definitely born a marten in some way, there was some internal fuck up that wired my brain different then it was supposed to be like, so I view my body as some form of mustelid and act very similarly to other mustelids. It’s heavily connected to my neurodivergence and neurological issues
I’m a canine because I was taught to be one from the media I consumed and the dog that raised me. It’s always been a bit more if a “psychological” identity because of that but I still view it as physical at least a good chunk of the time, likely due to dissociation, trauma, and just viewing myself as a dog for so long changing part of my brain to view myself as such
I’m like a goddamn nature vs nurture experiment
that’s the best way to put it
I was born a marten, but through external factors was made to be a canine
I’m so glad I have a way to explain this now-
Radio Collars and Bird Band Gear
With the increase in interest in radio collars and bird bands, I would like to bring to light one creator who makes such a thing that are wearable for nonhuman identifying people. : Bird Brain Leatherwork. Additionally, the business is independent and queer owned, run by a single artist and leatherworker. Her items are handmade, and by their appearance, look sturdy and well made.
These items are made with the BDSM/kink, petplay, furry, and therian communities in mind. She makes a variety of leather items such as collars and cuffs (as well as other items such as patches and LARP gear), but the following are items which specifically fit the topic of radio collars and bird bands.
Tracker Wild Critter Collar A collar designed to give the appearance of a wildlife monitoring collar. Customizable and able to include species and ID numbers. Also includes a pocket for a GPS tracker, so your handler or researcher can keep track of you.
The Bird Band Wild Critter Cuff Reminiscent of wildlife birdbands used for ecological research and monitoring. (Or bands used on "domesticated"/pet bird species as well.) Much like the Tracker collar, the Bird Band cuff also includes a pocket for a GPS tracker.
The Falconer Wild Bird Anklets These cuffs are meant to resemble the anklets placed on falconry birds, with a large eyelet for proper jess (or other rope) connections.
Ear Tag Wild Critter Tag An ear tag like those used in ecological research or ranch identification, able to be customized with your own words and symbols. Also includes a pocket for a GPS tracker, and different mounting options for small ears or fursuits. (There are other creators who have made similar Ear Tag style gear using lighter materials that may be easier to wear, if wearing the tag in the physical ear is important to the individual.)
Being a species many folks have never heard of sometimes makes me really sad because if I dressed in my canine gear everyone would know to refer to me as a canine or at least know I’m canine adjacent but if I wore my marten gear no one would know what I am
hi, i love otherpaws here. otherpaws are always welcome.
in light of the recent influx of otherpaw hate, i have some Things To Say.
truly, there is no real difference between otherpaws and furries, except the materials they use to roleplay as animals. we should not be gatekeeping materials, guys. you cannot seriously call yourself furry-friendly if you are anti-otherpaw. but that is not my main reason for disliking the anti-otherpaw stance.
i find a laaaaarge issue i have with these “but otherpaws are copying therians!!!!” folks is that the term otherpaw was created specifically to distance otherpaws from alterhumanity; to create a clear distinction that masks and quadrobics ≠ alterhuman (therian included). which is a factually correct distinction. and folks whining about copying are (maybe unintentionally, maybe not) obscuring that distinction.
no, someone wearing a mask or doing quads is not inherently copying or mocking therians, because masks and quads aren’t exclusive to therians, and they never have been. wearing a mask does not a therian make. wearing a mask does not necessarily have anything to do with therians. claiming that anyone who wears masks or does quads is copying therians is trying to claim exclusive rights of therians over masks and quads. it’s gatekeeping, yes, but worse than gatekeeping, it’s trying to cement masks and quads as inherently ‘therian’. which they aren’t. which we have tried all this time to teach folks that no, not all therians wear masks/do quads, and just because someone does those things doesn’t make them alterhuman.
but now these anti-otherpaw folks are regressing again to “mask = therian, therefore they must be copying and mocking therians”. which is factually inaccurate and damaging to what being alterhuman and being therian truly means. it’s what leads to the misinformation about the true depth of alterhuman identity on places like tiktok. and i’m so sick of it.
i know it’s not a widespread issue (yet). but given that i’ve seen a handful of posts and comments about it, this is why i hope it doesn’t become one.
(i have also alwayyyyyys found the argument “but x is too similar to y!” to be a terrible argument against x. cause like…. who cares. things are allowed to be similar. humans and nonhumans alike are so incredibly numerous that you will almost never have a completely unique experience which no one else has ever had. our experiences overlap significantly because there are so many beings in this world. there is no fault in someone having a similar experience to you. you will not die just because you aren’t in fact that worlds most special snowflake. i prommy.)
I’ve been going back and forth between changing my username for like a year but I have no idea if I should or not still
I like cowboy canine, but I feel like it’s a bit misleading since I bring less attention to my canine identity, but I can’t think of anything marten/mustelid related
I’ve also been using this username pretty much since I began interacting with the community so I don’t wanna confuse anyone
If you have ideas though let me know (or let me know if I should just keep my user the same)

Any diet you eat as [an animal] is [animal] food
Don't worry about your diet not fully mimicing the theriform animal's diet. You're an animal, and it's your food.
You can eat fruit salads as a tiger - it's tiger food. You can eat vanilla cupcakes as a wolf - it's wolf food. I can eat fried chicken as a hare - it's hare food.
It's simple.
I hate when people downplay animal death so fucking much.
can we NOT brag about killing birds with your car??? can we NOT play around with the specimens in a practical exam???
maybe its just me but animals need to be respected so much more than humans give them credit for.
this is one of the reasons im so misanthropic. you're telling me you have NO respect for the dead? at all? I get that accidents happen but when I see people making fun of anything dead I get pissed the fuck off.
when you hit something with your giant human death machine, you SHOULD feel bad. idgaf if it was "just a bird".
when you say a frog "deserved to die" because it was "disgusting", you need to get a grip on reality.
you're not better than a frog or a bird, you're the same if not worse. we are ALL animals. I hate that some humans think they are better than the creatures around them.
nature is a connecting and driving force that is not to be underestimated or assulted, its beauty is to be appreciated.
human impatience not being able to stop for two seconds to let an animal cross the road is baffling. the same with human INCOMPETENCE not understanding the simple rules of being respectful of the dead.
