Since felt is (usually) made by layering strands of wool together and beating the heck out of them until they cling together, you arenât really going to get the nice grid that woven or knitted fabrics have to help. The best thing I have found, (and admittedly, I havenât done a whole heck of a lot -on- felt) is to:
1. Stretch the fabric as tight as you can on a hoop or stretcher-bars as tight as you can without damaging the structural integrity. (less tight for hand-made felt than industrial).
2. get a marking tool (depends on fabric but chalk or wash-out marker or something that will not mar your fabric and thread and wash out) and chart the thing you want to make.Â
More stitches mean more distortion of the fabric, but doing this and watching your tension on the stitches should help.
