inside, the smell gets heavier. vacutainers arranged in a stand, a bottle of spirit rests on the table. a nurse arrives to cross check your name before getting busy with the procedure.
your eyes catch her ID— park minju— and she turns away.
“dr. yang mentioned you,” she grabs a syringe from the drawer and unpacks it, giving it a few pumps before facing you again. “how do you know each other?”
“we met in university,” you respond, taking a note of how soft and warm she sounds, very fitting for a nurse. she gives a smile before taking your arm.
“we’re already on a high patient load today yet he made an appointment for you,” a sigh, her fingers work efficiently to palpate a vein in the inside of your elbow. “he hates overworking,”
and you scoff at her words. “is that so? that guy works like the world will end tomorrow,”
jungwon lives like he is married to work. one would think he loves his profession— which he does, really— but then complains relentlessly about the same. and then go live through all of it vicariously all over again.

frankly, she never understood the point of keeping in a secret. publicity means more funding, more opportunities. although, the lengths jungwon has gone to keep it hidden show his devotion.
“he mentioned it once. are you a part of it too?” and your eyes speak of genuine interest and innocent curiosity as you wait for an answer.
one more person knowing about the research wouldn’t make a change.
