Hello!

I’m a counseling student in New England. I’m taking the National Counselor Examination in October. The problem is that I haven’t looked at any of my theory stuff in MONTHS.

So this blog is here to help keep me accountable, and maybe show off my notes and process. At best, I’ll help other people who are studying. At worst, I’ll have something to look back and laugh at.

Choosing Nott the Brave as an avatar wasn’t an accident. I feel like there’s a tendency for studyblrs to be very fancy in their aesthetic. This is not that. My handwriting is big and loopy and I tend to drink more energy drinks than tea. And maybe I’m starting this blog to normalize that kind of student as well.

The section on self-disclosure is more helpful than any other discussion on it that I’ve had. Because it sets up the super clear line in the sand: Who is the disclosure helping?

Are you, the counselor, disclosing your personal stuff because it feels good to share it, or because your client would be helped by it? I think any counselor who wants to disclose a personal, emotional reaction to a client needs to be able to answer how it will help the client.

Meanwhile the clarification is really encouraging to me because I was worried that disclosing that we had shared interests would make me seem less professional or that I was being a bad therapist, but I think it was probably more helpful because they felt like they could talk about those interests without feeling judged or needing to explain things. “Do you know what (X) is?” “Yep!” “Okay, so…”

4/100 days of productivity

Today (and yesterday) we’re on “Counseling and Helping Relationships.” So basically everything I learned in Skills class. The chapter is the longest one in the book, so I split it between yesterday and today.

One of my favorite things to collect is pens. My girlfriend likes to make fun of me for hoarding washi tape, but the pens are the true hoard. I do throw them out when they’re empty though.

3/100 days of productivity

Finally got some time to get to the library and get some work done! I haven’t been doing much, which is a problem because my next practice test is soon. Thank God it’s nothing formal!

I followed through listening to Closer at half-speed, which is a preoccupation I had for months. It was everything I hoped it would be. I haven’t turned on any music in the library yet, but I think I might, since the couple behind me keeps talking.

The book defines classism as “prejudice against someone based on their social-economic class.” I feel like that could do with a revision because I can totally see someone going “They’re bullying me because I’m rich” and that’s fuckin wild to me.

So here’s a cool thing. I always thought acculturation was an individual thing. But its not. Acculturation is when it happens to a group and it turns out that the word for the individual doing it is assimilation.

I think I’ve just heard them used interchangeably so many times that I didn’t realize they had separate meanings.

Back at it again. I really like my color scheme today; it’s my girlfriend’s favorite colors and it’s nice on the eyes. Also welcome to the first can on Monster of the study season. Long may it reign.

Don’t most study blogs put up their music too? I’m not listening to anything, but if I was going to, I kinda want to listen to Closer, but at half-speed.

100 Days of Productivity: 1/100

Back to basics for the first day of studying for the NCE. I took a practice test completely blind and got 48%. So this is all necessary.

My reward for doing this is starting on FF7 Intergrade’s longplay tonight. It looks gorgeous.
