I- oh hold on, let me record...
[Audio ID: In the background you can hear the faint sounds of a diner- dishes clanking, orders and light conversation, Pokemon walking back and forth. There's also a faint... staticy hum, of the sort that suggests psychic interference.
"...but that still don't answer my question. Why? What is so god damned important about me? I'm just some old broad from the block. I'm not a wizard or a pro athlete or a sailor or a soldier or any of that stuff. Why me? What is this all about?"
The first speaker has a lightly gruff voice full of energy, and a strong Unovan accent. Or to be accurate, a Brooklyn accent.
The reply comes... Hesitantly, from a higher voice. Sparkly and bright, with just the faintest edge of a mean girl sneer. Or so you could assume so if not for the swirl of emotions darkening it, pushing hesitation into every sentence.
"...I needed a very special kind of pokemon. We... the Tapu, Solgaleo, Lunala... we have enemies. Some of them are... very, very old. And very, very powerful."
"...you have to understand, you're all from different worlds, right? And there's different paths from world to world. Some of them are like... slipping sideways. Some of them, it's... fractional differences, marginal, so much so you might not even notice it had happened. And sometimes... some pokemon take..."
"...the long way here. Through a... between place, you'd almost call it. It's the realm Solgaleo and Lunala are from. Distance and time and matter and energy all... bleed together there. And when pokemon pass through it, for long periods, they come out... changed."
"Most of the ones who journey here that way, they have... some capacity to drain energy. To siphon from what they conquer, and make themselves stronger. To... keep themselves sustained, during the journey through that void-space. And that is what I needed. ...we don't have a word for them here. We never gave them one. But as I said, in the world some of you are from, they have a name."
"Those are Ultra Beasts."
