Reworking Gendered Energies
When getting started with magic, especially magic influenced by Wicca, nearly everything is immediately split into a gender binary. To many people, this system is reductive, exclusionary, and sorely outdated. Hereâs how we can rework it and make it useful.Â
Projective vs. Receptive
When a spell ingredient is listed as masculine or feminine, it rarely has anything to do with actual gender. Reducing the idea to its root, we find that gendering an ingredient is shorthand for depicting the way its energy moves, projective or receptive.Â
Projective energies, formerly deemed masculine, work their magic by going out from the source and changing things. They banish, they influence, they alter.Â
Receptive energies, the feminine, draw things in. They work their magic by serving as a beacon/sponge. They attract, they collect, and they accumulate.Â
With this in mind, we can swap out gender for these meanings and have an extra layer of nuance to our spells. If our spell is focused on, say, drawing in wealth (receptive,) we can use ingredients that focus on bringing the outside in. If weâre sending out influence to convince somebody to give us that new job (projective,) then we can focus on ingredients that reach out. Maybe your spell wants to cast out and bring in, and you can use a balance.
This can also work for deciding the type of spell youâre doing. Think of how candles and wands are typically âmasculineâ and cups/chalices are âfeminine.â To me, that sounds a lot like typical candle spells are projective and jar spells are receptive.Â
Traditional, binary ideas of gender have a shrinking place in modern day witchcraft. That said, if we can take the gendering thatâs already been done and rework it to something more inclusive and more useful, then we can all benefit. Whatâs nice is that the past few decades of aggressively gendering everything means half the work of deciding which-herb-is-which is already done for us; all we have to do is change our vocabulary.

What phase is the moon in again?
I've been seeing a lot of discussion about lunar magic, so I thought I'd post something that's been kicking around in my head for a minute.
Lunar magic is not an exact science. Don't be too hard on yourself if you have difficulty tracking the phases, forget when the zenith and nadir of the cycle are, or can't think of anything to do when the moon is full.
If you just miss the lunar timing you were aiming for, it's not the end of the world and you don't have to wait a full month to do your spell. The idea that spells can only be done at a particular time or risk failure simply because of less-than-perfect timing is asking a bit much of the modern witch, especially when planets and astrological aspects start getting involved.
Don't feel pressured to do your spells when the time is optimal according to some chart or social media post.
The time is right when you feel the need is present.
But if it helps, here are some of the things I use to help myself keep track of the lunar cycle.

Cafe Astrology (for astrological aspects)
And here are some books that might help with further study.
Mansions of the Moon for the Green Witch (Moura)
Everyday Moon Magic (Morrison)
Moon Spells (Ahlquist)
The Moon Book (Gottesdiener)
Llewellyn Annual Moon Sign Book

Self Care Challenge
I have a challenge for all of my followers and fellow witches.
Today, I want you to do a self care ritual for yourself. All you need is the intention for cleansing and healing (at least, I believe in intention being very useful).
Some ideas: Self care bath, giving yourself a spa treatment, painting your nails, gardening, going for a walk, taking a nap, enjoying a hobby, taking time off the internet, smoke cleansing, meditation
Then, I want you to share with me and our fellow witches your plan for what you're going to do in reblogs or replies (replies are on for people who have followed me for over a week).
I want to see more self care in Witchblr, because I truly believe self care plays a huge part in spirituality.
