The Moon's apparent angular diameter at its average distance from Earth is 31 arcminutes, while the nebula measures 80.0' × 50.0'.
So why can't we see the nebula? The reason is that the object is very faint!

A Galactic Showdown Billions of Years in the Making: Andromeda Is Racing Toward Us! 🌌
The Andromeda Galaxy—our nearest large cosmic neighbor—is hurtling toward the Milky Way at a staggering ~250,000 miles per hour (about 110 km/s relative to our galaxy). This headlong rush was first revealed in 1912 by astronomer Vesto Slipher, who detected a clear blueshift in Andromeda’s light spectrum. That pioneering measurement predated Edwin Hubble’s broader discovery of the expanding universe by more than a decade, marking Andromeda as one of the very first galaxies shown to be in motion relative to the Milky Way.
Thanks to the Hubble Space Telescope’s extraordinary precision, astronomers have since tracked the movements of individual stars within Andromeda. These observations confirmed the rapid approach while also pinning down a small sideways (transverse) velocity component. That crucial data allowed scientists to map out the full three-dimensional path of this impending encounter for the first time. While early models strongly favored a direct hit, the transverse motion remains the trickiest variable—recent studies incorporating Gaia and Hubble data now estimate roughly a 50% chance of a full merger within the next 10 billion years, rather than a clean miss.
If they do collide, it won’t be a sudden crash but an epic, drawn-out cosmic dance lasting billions of years:
First close passage — Gravity will stretch and distort both spiral galaxies, flinging stars and gas outward while sparking intense bursts of new star formation as interstellar clouds smash together.
Separation and return — The galaxies will swing apart briefly before falling back for increasingly violent encounters.
Final merger* — Over perhaps 2 billion years of repeated passages, they will fully coalesce into one giant elliptical galaxy, affectionately nicknamed Milkomeda (or Milkdromeda).
Throughout this titanic event, our Sun and its planets will almost certainly survive intact—though the Sun may be hurled into a brand-new orbit far from its current home. From Earth’s perspective (assuming our world still exists), the night sky will transform dramatically: Andromeda will swell from a faint fuzzy patch into a breathtaking spectacle, eventually filling the heavens alongside our own galaxy in a dazzling display of intertwined spirals, starbursts, and glowing gas.
