Carving teeth all weekend.... #bluebeauty #toothcarving #dentallabtech #maxillary #molar #wax #dentallaboratorytechnician #someonehireme
This embroidery by Hannah Claire Somerville is called 1 Year of Stitches. For one year, Hannah worked on this piece on a daily basis. We have chosen pictures from her blog’s documentation of the project from January, February, April, June, September, November, and December.
“I am interested in the impact, or mark, that an individual makes on a daily basis. Big or small, our daily activities are often times unquantifiable and intangible. I am approaching this project as a personal map making; the fabric ground represents each day of 2016, with the needle and thread representing my actions throughout the day. I will embroider— maybe one stitch, maybe more, (hopefully) every day and photograph the result. The embroidery I create will become a tangible, visual account of the decisions, movements, conversations and sometimes lack thereof, that I make each day. I hope to use this project as a means of generating a deeper reflection upon the choices we make as a society.”
We are inspired by Hannah’s dedication to this project and her commentary that individuals can make small changes that over time can grow into something beautiful. You can check out this piece’s progress through 2016 on instagram, and be sure to follow her new piece for 2017 on her new instagram!

PSA: Back to School Financial Aid
I’ve been trying to find a balance between work/life/art/makingshit/makingmylifetogether type of thing after graduating from undergrad four years ago. Trying to find the right career that could make a living and gain meaningful experience in was something I struggled to find. Honestly, the place that I worked at was great in that aspect, but the negativity of the space and the lack of growth really hindered what I really wanted to achieve. And some things are just better left to start fresh and new.
I guess you could say I was having a quarter-life crisis.
Anyway, I went back to school to do dental lab technology because it combined two things: making things and making money. Something I could find a balance in. (And to be honest, they have access to the best casting materials). It seemed like the best financial option, the program is at a community college so the total cost of the program is tolerable, and I wouldn’t be drowning in debt by the time I completed the program.
But because I went to a community college there is no lending hand. My bachelor’s degree is my road block to any financial aid assistance known to man. It’s been a brutal five months battling with financial aid in which I was able to find my answer by directly talking to the director to finally make some peace.
Basically, because of the corruption caused by the for-profit technical schools, the Department of Education pulled financial assistance for students (like me) who were going back to school to change careers. The system was abused by schools and students alike who were taking money out and not completing their program and ultimately, defaulting on their loans. I’m the middle child that got screwed over by their big sister. Also, I guess receiving a certificate in a program is a ‘step backwards’ from a bachelor’s degree and the Department of Ed. doesn’t see it as a viable step forward to advance in a career.
Well that was that. I’ve been applying to jobs only to be turned down because my program is full-time so my availability is limited. I can’t take out any private student loans out because of the system. I can’t apply for any more credit cards because I don’t have an income because I don’t have a job. So what can I do?
I’m going to sell things. Yes, I am selling my things! I’ve been combing through some stuff while I was moving and will be listing them soon on Etsy, Ebay, whatever, hopefully be Veteran’s Day weekend. I’m also planning on make some things and selling it, but I haven’t narrowed it down to what I should be making (I’m open to suggestions!).
Anyway, I felt like I needed to get this out there because I know I’m not the only one in this situation. Also, I feel like it would be insightful about what school to go back to if you ever decide to go (cause now you know about those community colleges!). Here’s to hoping that I have more than 50 cents in my bank account and a bright future ahead! Cheers.

Bulbasaur is finished! It took me ages to complete the last 2% for some reason, but here he is! I hope to have the original 150 finished and put into a quilt by the time I’m 40. This seems doable. And hey, let me know if you want a Pokemon hoop art, pillow, or whathaveyou custom made. ;)
