Just got back from SNDN & my god, they slutted Rohan the fuck out in that movie. You were seeing every nook & cranny of that man's body just shy of him taking his underwear off. They knew their audience fr. 5 stars.
-On a more srs note, as a horror/slasher fan (& not just. a Rohan one) & someone who's seen all the previous SNDNs, with specific time devoted to revisiting the original every year, I do think this mightttttttt just be my favorite? I think anyone expecting it to be identical. to the original will be disappointed since it takes a completely different approach to the NAUGHTY/PUNISH angle, but I was receptive to those changes & noticed each & every reference that was cleverly peppered in that indicated Nelson is a genuine fan of the material. 1984, 2012, & 2025 have had such drastically different takes on the overlapping Killer Santa Clauseâ„¢ iconography that I would argue you could still end up remaking it again without it feeling tired, which I think speaks to how much 2025 has set itself apart from what came before, even with having more in common with 1984 than any of the intermediary installments. Am eagerly looking forward to a sequel being greenlit with the way the movie concluded in mind (something I already strongly suspected would occur as a major Halloween Ends fan fdjkshj) clearly insinuating there were plans from the beginning to continue this story.
-Beyond appreciating Rohan for his...assets, I do genuinely think this is his best performance in anything I've seen from him so far, which, once again, is no small feat for as major of a Halloween Ends fan as myself. I'm not sure if everybody will be as enamored with &/or critical of his iteration of Billy Chapman compared to how much Corey Cunningham drove everybody crazy in 2022 (for better or worse) cause I already thought he was the p e r f e c t choice for this role before seeing a single frame of footage. Even for the numerous changes between Rohan & Robert Brian Wilson's performance in the original, you still get that sense of loneliness, the want to Be Goodâ„¢, the awkwardness of being misunderstood, & Rohan's own specific idiosyncrasies that tie his version of Billy together into crafting a Fully-Fledged Three-Dimensional Characterâ„¢ divorced from all the bloodshed. While I can see how certain changes would make for a more contentious character to SNDN Super Fansâ„¢, as I've already alluded to, or how many might not be...enthused by the trajectory the plot goes in, one can readily see how Rohan was in good hands with Nelson's direction. Fingers crossed they'll get to work together again in the future cause he just gets it.
-On a final note, I want to cover Ruby Modine's version of Pamela. I've obviously spent much of the run up to this movie's release with Rohan Glassesâ„¢ on, unfortunately at the expense of giving her her flowers & I'm here to finally change that! Pamela is a character whose function in the original has a l w a y s bothered me because she simply existed as a means for Billy to project onto as a fantasy before he snaps & she's consumed by his rampage. By comparison, Ruby's bristly, irreverent, off kilter, true crime obsessed, prone to anger version of her is a perfect companion to Rohan's Billy with a much needed depth & interiority that made her just as investing to watch. Much like Rohan, I knew she wouldn't disappoint as a fan of her work in the Happy Death Days & that instinct was just as successful at getting a read on her pre-release. Her version of Pamela's got all this other shit going on in her life while Billy is having to contend with Killer Santa Clauseâ„¢ duty, but the fact they're both so fuckin weird is what draws them to each other & sends them on a collision course with the impending doom of Christmas Day. Even if there are ~elements~ that I can see would make Halloween Ends fans view this budding relationship as "if Corey & Allyson both had psychotic tendencies," I do think the areas where they set themselves apart from those characters create such a beautiful dynamic that comes off strangely hopeful despite the context of...what happens.
