Meanwhile, in Murcia ...
It looks like I haven’t posted anything since the end of last school year. Sorry about that! Time flies. We’ve only got a couple weeks left until Christmas, so I’ll do my best to give you a quick summary of how the fall trimester has gone:
This year I’m working 24 hours per week with primary (primaria) and preschool (infantil). My students range from 3-11 years old, which has been a nice change. Last year I spent about half my time in secondary, where the kids (12-16) were much more frustrating.
Of course, every age has its share of students with behavioral issues. That’s normal. But in general, I just find myself more at ease teaching the younger ones—especially preschoolers.
When you step into a classroom and all the students’ faces light up with excitement, how could you not love that? It makes me smile every time.
To the little kids, everything is awesome and new and exciting. And I’m so glad I have that constant reminder at my workplace to appreciate the little things in life the same way they do.
I feel like a celebrity when I walk down the halls of the school and my students shout out “HELLO TEEEEACHERRRR!” even if I saw them just 10 seconds earlier :P
My coworkers have been great this year too. Raquel and Belén are the two teachers I work with the most. It’s nice to finally get the chance to work with teachers who are around the same age as me. Nothing against the older teachers—it’s just easier to relate to people in their mid-20s. After all, we’re all in the same boat, being new to teaching.
These last couple weeks before the Christmas holiday are basically gonna be preparation for the school’s final two Christmas concerts. I’ll be playing guitar and singing with the preschoolers on “Feliz Navidad” and “Jingle Bells.” And with my secondary students from last year, I’ll be playing/singing along with a couple of their Spanish villancicos.
Since tomorrow is my birthday, I brought bizcocho and chocolate truffles to the teachers’ lounge today. It’s pretty customary for the birthday person in Spain to treat his/her coworkers to some food, rather than the other way around. Sponge cake and chocolate seems like the most common go-to combination. I kind of like this tradition. It makes me feel good to see the people around me happy.
Also on the agenda for next week is picking up my renewed residency card. (Yeah, they still haven’t printed the new card.) I’m literally the next number on the government’s online list, so I assume Monday or Tuesday will be the day.
Before I know it, I’ll be on a plane to … Oslo. Then … Fort Lauderdale. Then … ATLANTA!
It’ll be a long voyage, but I’m ready to be back home for the holiday. I can’t wait to see everybody and enjoy our Christmas traditions :)
Talk soon!
Love, Corbett
That's it! My first year of teaching English in Spain is officially over. Yesterday was my last day. Today, I'm moving a bunch of stuff into the school where they'll store it this summer (ie. winter clothes, bed sheets, electronics, kitchen stuff, etc.). Tomorrow morning, I'm off to Alicante, then Copenhagen, then Fort Lauderdale, THEN Atlanta. It'll be a reeally long day, but I'm excited to see family 👪 and friends 👯 after being away for 10 months!
The sky looked really cool last night as I was crossing the bridge. #ahhhhhhhhh 🌅
*UPDATE: I’m officially coming back to my (main) school in Murcia for the 2015-16 school year! That might come as a surprise, given my less-than-rave reviews of the city, but my reason for coming back isn’t even about Murcia itself. These past couple months have gone much better than the previous, largely due to the fact that I’m no longer living in a hellish apartment. (Mo’ cats, mo’ problems. Mo’ bedbugs, mo’ problems. Mo’ holes in the walls ... usually mo’ problems.) I’m also gonna be working with kids from 3-12 years old next year, which is icing on the cake. My favorite classes! :)

I just made 18,36 euros playing in a plaza for 1 hour! That was the best busking I've ever done 👍
Today we celebrated Día de ("Day of") Santa Joaquina de Vedruna (my school's patron saint). My students were all spray painting their hair, and I was pretty jealous, so I asked them to paint mine too. Long story short, it was a great day. Lots of games, music and food. No classes 😊
This is the beach where I'm hoping to live next year :)
Oh my God ...
Reflection: 1 Month Left
The past few weeks in Murcia have been the best of my experience so far. The weather’s warmer, I’m making new friends every day, I’m spending more and more time in the school’s music room ... Things are great!
But on the flip side, I’ll be leaving it all behind this fall and starting anew in Jerez de la Frontera, in Cádiz.
It’s a bummer I can’t move all my friends and students with me when I go to Jerez, pero así es la vida.
My friends here tell me I’m not gonna understand anything when I move southwest. Apparently the people in Cádiz speak with such thick accents, even other Spaniards have a hard time understanding what they’re saying.
Oh well ... New challenges keep things from getting boring. And arguably the most beautiful surf spots in Europe are only 1-2 hours away from my new school. So it can’t be too bad, right? ;)

Here are some pictures from my day trip to Alicante this past Saturday.
One of my 16-year-old classes 📷
One of my students was wearing this T-shirt today. Unbelievable. #GoDawgs
Before the main concert, the kids sang a couple Spanish songs. A lot of my primary students are in the first 2 rows 👍
Last night I went to see my co-worker's group (La Ruina) play a concert at a local school. Ana isn't playing in this video, but I thought it was a funny clip worth sharing (see 0:30). 🎶

Upon Dad’s request, here are some pictures of my home for the next 2 months. Oh, and you'll probably notice I've got way too much TP in my possession.
Moving Day
I just moved into my third apartment in under 8 months. I hope third time’s the charm! This one is just as cheap as my second, but it seems like it has none of the problems the other had (ie. constant cigarette smoke, a crazy cat, deteriorating walls, broken faucets, poor lighting, manual water heating, a nasty fridge, no freezer space, torn-up furniture, cat poop everywhere, the smell of cat poop everywhere, etc.). Also, my new flatmates are mostly older people, which I think is probably a good thing. Fingers crossed ...
