Enough about Thomas and Mary parallels, I want to specifically see queer Mary and the disparity in how she’s treated for her sexuality vs Thomas. Most characters either pretend not to know or quietly accept her, but Mr. Carson’s opinion is the only one that matters to her on a deeper level, and in true Carson fashion, he adopts a “love the sinner, hate the sin” attitude - he’d never call her “revolting” (like he would another snide, dark haired schemer), but very much “I cannot change my views, not even for you”. I want him to inevitably, maybe with a heartfelt hug while wiping her tears and some “Lady Mary will always come first, and every part of Lady Mary” shit, and a concrete apology. And I want Thomas to be angry. I want to see him livid that Carson had it in him to accept him as a gay person but didn’t. I want to see him bitter at having endured years of blatant homophobia and verbal abuse at his boss’s hand when suddenly his boss flips around and supports his pseudo-daughter who has class and status and a close bond with him, because any acceptance he has is visibly conditional. Thomas’s life didn’t even matter to him at multiple points in the series. I want to see the tension unfold the first time Carson defends Mary and see him eventually awkwardly apologize to Thomas, and see him struggle with whether to accept the apology or keep the satisfaction of walking out and completely disregarding any opinion Carson has of him, because no, he is going to be the last person in this argument (“no, Mr. Carson, I am not foul”), and because undoing the damage is pretty much a lost cause. But at the same time... the change or progress does matter to him, just a little bit.

i think it can be easily accounted for by the fact that daisy is a lesbian and andy wants to be a farmer but has no family with a farm to inherit and no ability to start one up and she doesnt want to marry a man but will definitely get plenty of questions as to why she hasnt when she leaves service. And also ofc wants to inherit the mason farm but maybe doesnt want to be tied to it completely by being entirely responsible for its running. So she marries andy entirely platonically so they can both benefit

I also like to think with no basis that andy is gay and thomas Recognized it and thats why he adopted him. it's explored in the same version of downton with s1 love square, sybil&thomas besties, chris webster chauffeur, daisy&thomas besties, thomas and mary twin flames, mary/mabel lane fox affair, edith/virginia woolf affair etc

Yes!!!! I have been thinking a LOT about how we see her in s1 and how shallow and vapid she is in a way we never see again after that. And I often attribute it to her being beaten down and turned into the proper countess by Violet. And not having any other escape from that really turned her into that. There was no one to give her any reprieve and nothing for her to do other than fill that role the way she was taught. And the war gave her an opportunity like never before and allowed her to grow and move forward and never be stuck the way she was before.

the actual reason why o’brien had to be absent this season is that if she stayed, literally 90% of the plots wouldn’t pass 5 minutes without being solved/cracked and 10% wouldn’t happen because she wouldn’t let it
