He actually made it back in time! (if you want to believe a paper called MegaStar) Funnily, a few days ago I came across this pasted in the old news group:
OASIS star Noel Gallagher stormed out of Wembley yesterday - and missed his beloved Manchester City's amazing fightback.
City nut Noel had gone to cheer on his team as they battled for promotion to the First Division against unfancied Gillingham.
But with City two down and the game going into injury time, Noel walked out of the stadium in disgust telling fans: "We've had it."
As he roared off in a car with actor Keith Allen and Jungle star Goldie, he turned on the radio - and heard he had missed a City comeback to rival Man United's in the European Cup. Stunned Noel ordered the driver to turn around and dash back to the stadium.
He just managed to get back to his seat for the dramatic penalty shoot-out, which City won three-one. Noel, once rumoured to have been keen on buying City, sat anxiously with his head in his hands during the crucial kicks.
But his brother Liam had showed more faith in City's ability.
He was on the opposite side of the ground, leaping up and down like crazy throughout the game. As the brothers celebrated with other fans, their hit song Roll With It was played over Wembley's speakers.
When the final whistle went, Noel turned round to the supporters beside him and shouted: "Thank God for that. I didn't think they'd let me back in. I'd never have forgiven myself if I'd missed it."
Noel was luckier than George Best, who missed United's injury-time win against Bayern Munich after leaving the Nou Camp in Barcelona while the Germans led 1-0 with only seconds left, Lifelong City fan Noel appeared at a hospitality suite before the game with Goldie and Keith, who made last year's World Cup song Vindaloo.
Noel, who was 32 on Saturday, was on his best behaviour, sipping mineral water and staying clear of the booze before the kick-off.
He sat at the tunnel end, surrounded by tens of thousands of City fans, not far from Coronation Street star Kevin Kennedy, who plays Curly Watts.
The songwriter was clearly nervous as he watched his side struggle to hit top form against a lively Gillingham team.
With City's huge support shocked by the Gills' second goal, Noel accepted defeat and hurriedly left to avoid the crowds.
He said to one fan nearby: "We have had it. We aren't going to win this one."
Actor Keith said: "We had actually got in the car when we heard an almighty cheer. We turned the radio on and found we'd made it 2-1. It seemed only seconds passed before there was an equaliser.
"Noel was in a panic, he thought we'd never get back in."
As he regained his seat fans nearby chanted: "Welcome back, Noel."
After the penalty contest was won thanks to the heroics of City keeper Nicky Weaver, Noel punched the air and said: "I never thought we were capable of doing a United. I thought we had blown it. I'm just so glad I got back in to see this. We'll take the First Division by storm."
Noel, who once staged a sell-out concert at the club's Maine Road ground, was linked with a bid for the troubled club.
But he said: "I don't want those scally City fans round at my house, putting my windows in when City are in the Third Division and blaming it all on me. I'll just stay in the executive boxes and watch."
