The night before had been the biggest one of Michael’s life, the night he’d taken home eight Grammy Awards at the 26th Annual Grammy Awards. During his acceptance speeches, he’d thanked his family, the people closest to him, and more friends than you could count. But he hadn’t mentioned you.
He didn’t have to, of course.
Still, it hurt more than you cared to admit, and you hadn’t spoken a single word to him since.
The two of you had been inseparable since childhood. You’d stood beside him through the worst moments with his father, and he’d done the same for you whenever life fell apart. No matter what happened, you always found your way back to each other.
And somehow, that only made this sting worse.
To top it all off, today was your twenty-fourth birthday. Every birthday you could remember had been spent with Michael. Every single one. But this year, there’d been no call, no visit, no sign of him at all.
You sat in your family’s small house surrounded by relatives and a few close friends, trying your best to enjoy yourself while cutting slices of cake and opening gifts. Money had always been tight for your parents, so there weren’t many presents, but that never mattered to you. You appreciated every little thing they gave you without complaint.
Still, something felt missing. Two hours had already passed since everyone arrived, and Michael still hadn’t shown up. The whole evening felt dull without him. You kept wondering where he was, if he’d forgotten, if something had happened, if maybe things between you really had changed.
But every thought vanished the second the phone in your bedroom started ringing.
Your heart jumped. You hurried upstairs, quickly grabbing the receiver, and the first thing you heard was his voice.
“Hey… what’re you up to?” Michael asked casually, his tone calm and easygoing.
No mention of your birthday. That alone nearly shattered you.
Because Michael wasn’t just your best friend. He was the boy you’d been in love with your entire life, your first love.
“Nothin’. Just home,” you replied quietly, trying to sound normal. “What about you?”
There was no way you were going to tell him you were in the middle of your own birthday party. Your pride wouldn’t allow it.
“I just got outta an interview,” he explained with a soft laugh. “Y’know… because of last night.” He paused briefly before adding, “You wanna go for a drive or something?”
You hesitated. Part of you wanted to say yes immediately. You loved him too much to ever turn down the chance to be near him. But the other part of you remembered your family downstairs waiting for you.
“Mhm… I don’t think I can,” you murmured, disguising the disappointment in your voice. “I gotta do a few things. I’m kinda busy—”
You didn’t even get to finish before his voice interrupted softly through the line.
“Please?”
And just like that, every ounce of resistance melted away. “…Fine,” you sighed, fighting the smile creeping onto your lips. “Pick me up in twenty minutes. And don’t be late, Mike.”
You hung up before he could answer, cheeks burning and heart racing uncontrollably.
Twenty minutes later, after making up some excuse to leave the house for a while, you stepped outside and immediately spotted him leaning beside his car.
God, he looked so good.
He was dressed elegantly in that unmistakable way only Michael could pull off, dark slacks, a fitted shirt, gold details catching the fading sunlight. Effortlessly charming. And it drove you insane.
“You look real pretty tonight,” he remarked with that perfect smile of his, voice smooth as velvet.
You felt your face heat up instantly. Michael flirted constantly; it was simply part of who he was. He acted that way with girls, interviewers, even fans sometimes. You’d learned years ago not to take it seriously.
“You look the same as always,” you teased with a small smirk.
He chuckled softly and opened the passenger door for you like a gentleman.
The drive was strangely quiet. Uncomfortably quiet. That had never happened before. Usually the two of you talked endlessly, jumping from one subject to another without ever running out of things to say. But tonight, it felt like both of you were hiding something.
Eventually, Michael pulled into a place you’d never seen before. The view stole the breath right out of your lungs.
The sunset stretched across the sky in shades of gold and orange, illuminating an empty grassy field. In the middle of it sat a blanket and a picnic basket waiting beneath the evening sky. The only sounds were the faint chirping of birds and the breeze brushing through the grass.
Michael quickly stepped out of the car and reached into the backseat, pulling out a bouquet of flowers before approaching you. He bit lightly at his lower lip, clearly trying to suppress a smile.
“Happy twenty-fourth birthday,” he whispered, handing you the flowers as he pushed his sunglasses onto the top of his curls. “You didn’t really think I forgot the birthday of the most important person in my life, did you?”
“You’re unbelievable,” you muttered, lightly hitting his shoulder. “I thought our friendship didn’t mean anything to you anymore.”
A warm laugh escaped him. “I know every little thing about you that nobody else does,” he replied dramatically, placing a hand over his chest as though offended. “I know you better than you know yourself. How could I forget your birthday?”
Then he nodded toward the blanket spread across the grass.
“C’mon.”
Before you could say another word, he gently took your hand and guided you toward it.
The evening was peaceful. Too peaceful. And definitely not friendly. The atmosphere felt intimate, romantic even. Anyone watching from afar would’ve assumed it was a date. But according to you, this was just Michael being Michael.
At least… that’s what you kept telling yourself.
After a while, he slipped his sunglasses back on and carefully took both your hands into his. He exhaled nervously, biting his lower lip again.
“I don’t want you lookin’ at me while I say this,” he admitted shyly before clearing his throat. “I’m serious.”
Confused, you lowered your gaze to your intertwined fingers.
“I’ve known you since before I even learned how to talk… before I knew how to write,” he began softly. “And ever since then, you’ve been the first thing on my mind when I wake up and the last thing I think about before I fall asleep.” His hands trembled slightly around yours.
“I know everything about you. Your fears, your favorite songs, what makes you laugh, what hurts you.” He swallowed hard. “And yeah… I saw the look on your face last night when I didn’t mention you during my speech.”
Your chest tightened.
“But tell me somethin’…” he continued quietly. “How was I supposed to call you my friend when all I can think about is kissin’ you?” He let out a nervous breathy laugh. “And I couldn’t call you my girl either… ‘cause I didn’t know if you felt the same way.”
Your heartbeat pounded violently against your ribs.
“Michael…”
“Shh,” he whispered sweetly, smiling just a little. “Lemme finish.” He squeezed your hands tighter.
“I’m crazy about you,” he confessed. “You’re beautiful… you’re all I think about. Better than any award, better than—”
You didn’t let him finish.
Without thinking, you grabbed the front of his shirt and kissed him hard. Passionately. Desperately.
Your fingers slid into his soft curls as his entire body reacted instantly, kissing you back like he’d been waiting years for it. A quiet sound escaped him as his hands found your waist, pulling you impossibly closer.
His lips were warm, addictive, perfect against yours.
Before either of you could think straight, Michael guided you onto his lap with surprising confidence, letting out a low strained breath as his hands tightened at your hips. He broke the kiss for only a second before capturing your lips again hungrily, moving you gently against him.
You could feel how badly he wanted you. How hard he was.
Then suddenly. Voices. Both of you froze instantly. You pulled away from each other in panic, quickly climbing off his lap while Michael awkwardly adjusted his shirt, clearly flustered.
The voices grew louder until two girls appeared nearby. The second they recognized him, they screamed.
“Oh my God, Michael Jackson?!”
They rushed over asking excitedly for autographs while you stood there speechless, fingertips brushing your swollen lips, still unable to believe what had just happened.
