I'm sooo sorry for saying this, but I disliked 901 so much T T
Lots of people are saying they were happy to see the pathetic, defective side of EM.
But personally, what made ME fall in love with him was his calm, calculating, and mysterious nature. I liked him because he acted far more neutral and less chaotic than Prime Rick while being just as villainous. I liked him because he had sooo much potential.
So yeah, watching EM acting so cocky and childish just to end up in jail made me kinda uncomfortable.
Like I completely understand the idea of EM being a lonely little boy - he was abused by his Rick, and at the end of the day heโs still just a 14-year-old kid with no real friends. The plot totally makes sense from this perspective ngl.
But I think I just like nonchalant, intelligent EM better for now because this sudden gap of EM's character feels really off.
Maybe my opinion would have changed if they showed EM's flaws through steady build-ups, not through the incest rom-com doujinshi that only feeds rickorty shippers.
I understand why Evil Morty's season nine appearance is controversial, but honestly, I think it's one of the best and (sadly) true-to-life twists in the entire show. People tend to identify with their abusers as a survival mechanism. While Evil Morty left that situation, he didn't leave survival mode, and he probably doesn't realize how damaged he is to begin with.
To make matters worse, it's safe to assume that being alone 24/7 uprooted a lot of pain that he doesn't know how to process. He can't deal with that, so his 14-year-old mind decides that the best way to get over his trauma is to relive a version of his childhood where HE'S the one in charge.
You'd think that he'd feel sorry for C-137 Morty and try to make friends, but their interactions make it clear that he doesn't identify with Mortys. He identifies with RICK because so much of his personality is tied up with his abuser. I think he sees himself as an honorary Rick, and teaming up with him to tease C-137 Morty is his subconscious way of redoing his trauma.
I didn't see this coming at all, but it makes perfect sense. The Morty who outsmarted everyone and wrote himself out of the story is so damaged that he sought out another version of his Rick to restart the cycle of abuse. He played the role of the perfect villain, but in the end, he's still a child--and spending time with a Rick who actually liked him and tried to protect his Morty will make his past even more painful.
You know, I was super pissed at the season 9 premier at first. I love Evil Morty but I thought that since his biggest goal was to leave all the Ricks in their finite curve and to find peace, he shouldn't be brought back. It felt a bit cheap to me that he was brought back to help C-137 Rick defeat Rick Prime but a Morty outsmarting a Rick was a win for me.
And then I went ballistic upon learning that he for some reason forces Rick to hang out with him and we see none of it happen and just get it told to us suddenly (off screen lore will never not piss me off, honestly) and now he's making Morty jealous for what seemed to me, no reason. I theorized that he was just being used as a plot device to bring Rick and Morty closer since we couldn't make Rick a complete asshole because he was learning to improve as a grandpa. There was also the Fear No Mort episode where Morty was supposed to face his fear of being dependent on Rick/Rick not needing him but I guess it could be argued that a filthy scary hole might not help Morty's inner issues completely, especially with Rick's shitty behaviour (especially when he replaced Morty with 2 crows). I ended up dismissing this episode as an attempt to just bring back the Evil Morty hype, especially because I kept seeing people comment "Rick and Morty is just not the same anymore it suks" (They always do it because of the change in voice actors I wish they'd just shut up)
But reading this now, it clicks for me. Yeah, this does make sense! People react to abuse differently, so I completely forgot that Morty is the type to go back to Rick (his abuser). They are literally programmed to be very forgiving (I'm not sure if Evil Morty was a clone but it matches his personality). Also, it is so Evil Morty to just turn the tables on Rick in the power dynamics and to drag Morty into it too to annoy both of them or even to try to divide them. This helped me see the premier in a better light when I remember that Evil Morty is still a child who was abused at the end.
