before i fall

funnily enough, considering they were married and all, laurel couldn’t recall them ever really having the sexuality talk. in the grand scheme of things it hadn’t seemed like the kind of thing that mattered. she knew george was into women from it coming up in conversation but she’d never thought to offer her own contribution. “you made that up,” she decided, finishing off her wine and leaning forwards to set the glass down. “i don’t really think we’ve talked about it but  — you know, women are great.” she shrugged. “certain women, at least.”

“i get a roof over my head and you get dinner,” laurel mused, shrugging slightly. she wouldn’t downplay george’s generosity but it was pretty obvious that the other woman wasn’t entirely comfortable as being seen as some sort of hero… despite the fact she was a doctor. she could stop harping on about it for now, at least. “oh, of course. i bet i looked super hot when we first met.” literally, probably. “i mean. i was expecting delilah’s… doner to be my husband one day,” she muttered, nose scrunching slightly. he was no father when he’d left her in the cold. “but before that? it could’ve been a woman.” 

mavis huffed out a breath of laughter, shaking her head. normally she wouldn’t push if she really thought her wife was tired from travelling but in this instance she knew better. she decided she could probably give alex a little longer in bed, though. “alright, after lunch,” she agreed. tipping her head back against the headboard. “is that where we’re setting the bar now? bringing me coffee equals good wife?” she hummed as if it was something that she had to think about. “i guess since it’s the first time in like six months, you get some brownie points.” 

the company of beautiful woman? the comment made laurel let out a laugh. she wasn’t sure she looked very beautiful when they first met so that definitely hadn’t been the thing to drive george into helping her. “it’s not blowing smoke up your ass. it’s true. you’ve done what a lot of people wouldn’t,” she insisted, swirling the contents of her glass around and letting her gaze drop to it. she definitely didn’t feel good about causing someone else’s life to be put on pause while she got back onto her feet but she was grateful. “i guess you bagged a wife out of it, one who’s a beautiful woman,” she mused with another little chuckle. 

“hm…” laurel mused, “you’re probably right. we’ll have to make sure we make it to bed, then.” it always amazed her how casual george was about all of this. she’d taken it in her stride; inviting a stranger to come live in her house with a new born baby. she really did owe her all of the thanks in the world, despite her modesty. “you like the company of a woman approaching thirty with no career aspirations and a baby?” she asked, shaking her head a little in disbelief. she knew eventually she’d have to work out a way to find her footing, get a job and work her life out. piggybacking off of george wouldn’t work forever, even if they were married. that was only a for-now, temporary solution. “you’re like… too good for this world, or something like that.” 

“it’s like… 9am,” mavis pointed out, lifting her head to glance over towards the clock on her beside table. by all accounts, it was still fairly early on in the day but she’d never really been able to take a proper ‘lie in’. sticking to a routine helped her during the week and it was also fairly beneficial when it came to keeping up with alex’s schedule. “i’m not suggesting that we go up mount everest, alex. just… you know, a nice stroll.” she wasn’t sure she was making it sound much more appealing but she rolled herself to face the other woman. “or a drive, or something.” 

letting loose like this wasn’t something laurel had ever really saw herself doing again after she found out that she was pregnant. her options were bleak — in fact, they were barely options. she’d saw shelters, charity, social services in her future. then george came along and in some weird, out of the blue twist of fate she’d been able to help. laurel really never would be able to express her gratitude at the fact she could even live in a place where winding down with a glass of wine on a friday night was possible. “mhm?” she moved around a little as if to test the couch for herself, nodding in agreement. “i guess i get it. i’m not sure how comfortably the two of us would fit, though. not without waking up with some sort of cramp.” she tipped her head against the back of the couch, gaze flickering towards the hallway for a moment before she looked over at george. “i really have to thank you, you know. i never feel like i say it enough.”

it was one of those weird, rare circumstances where they both had a few days off together and weren’t in a foreign country. mavis had almost forgotten what it was like to be home with her wife without an impending trip hanging over their heads. “we should go on a walk,” she decided, despite the fact she hadn’t even gotten out of bed yet. there was a large fluffy pup at the end of the bed trapping her feet. “or just do something in general.”

i like coming home to you and the baby. there had been a time where laurel was worried that the novelty of this all might wear off for george. after all, when helping her out in that fateful day in the alleyway there was no indication that this was where they’d end up months later. still living together and married. this had turned into something far more serious than she’d anticipated and while she’d always planned on trying to sort things out for herself, to move on and be able to leave george to get on with her life, the settled feeling had started to take over. instead of trying to look too deeply into what george could possibly mean by that statement, she just smiled and let the conversation carry on. “well, i suppose after a while just the fact that it’s alcohol is what matters the most, right?” she mused, swirling the contents of her glass around for a moment before taking a little sip. “and, i think that even counts for now. i think a sniff of vodka would probably get me drunk these days. what percentage is this?” she eyed the glass dubiously, more than aware her cheeks had warmed as she’d consumed more of it. “we might end up passed out on the couch tonight, i can totally see it happening.”

“i have to be up for work early tomorrow,” she argued, arms crossed defensively as she surveyed their apartment. she wasn’t accustomed to meeting on their turf and the risk of being caught grew exponentially considering they were married and she most definitely was not. “besides, what if they come home early from their trip?” never one to be lulled into a sense of security and ever-untrusting, alix was wary of her current paramours intentions. “won’t your neighbors be suspicious if they figure out that you aren’t here alone?”

laurel hummed softly, bringing her glass to her lips. now that they were developing a bit of a routine she felt like she was getting the chance to really know george. she’d known her enough to agree to marrying her for the sake of her daughter however everything had happened so fast, it was only now that things were starting to relax and she felt like less of a burden. she’d always owe something to her but it no longer felt like she was intruding on someone else’s life. “that would make sense. you’re probably a lightweight from working so hard and then coming home and having to deal with me and a baby,” she pointed out, sure that such a dramatic change in someone’s life would account for a lack of tolerance. “i used to sneak bottles of wine from my dad’s restaurant when i was a teenager. i’m sure you can imagine the girl with a bottle of cabernet was super popular at parties. i never liked it but it always did the trick, but i could definitely handle it better then than what i do now.”

“Well, well, well - I thought you said you were never coming back here,” Oakley said with a small grin, stepping into the classroom that used to house their shared english class. It was crazy to think that it’d been just about twenty years since they walked these halls together. Now they lived totally separate lives and barely spoke. Her high school reunion wasn’t her exact idea of fun, but she’d been back home for her parent’s anniversary and figured it was as good of a time as any to catch up with some old friends. The event was cheesy and half of her old classmates were still as two-faces as they were back in school, but with an open bar, it wasn’t a total waste of an evening. Oakley had been about to grab her fourth drink of the night when she saw the other disappear from the gymnasium. Going against her better instinct, she opted to follow them. “Thank god Hemmick retired or he’d dress code you for wearing something that tight.”

in a twist surprising to nobody, arielle had quite enjoyed high school. she had been a cheerleader, on the student government and been prom queen, and was generally well liked by her peers. but she had always been insistent that she wasn’t going to be one of those people in their tiny little town who peaked in high school. as soon as she had walked across that stage at graduation, she was done, high school was in the past and she was focused on her future. she’d moved to the city for college and the rest was history. when she had gotten the invitation for the reunion, arielle had scoffed, thrown it in the trash, but curiosity had gotten the better of her. there were things that couldn’t be found out from the occasional facebook stalk- and she had blocked whoever had joined mlms. and she supposed there were a few people she wanted to see... people that she would have never admitted meant a lot to her back when they were at school.
